Well this is my first time wearing braids and I just got them last week. I have box braids and I will be wearing them until Dec. '09. I have about 5 inches of hair and I am trying to get to full APL by then. I need to average .75 inches per month and retain most of it. I got a perm in Sept. and will only perm in May and Dec of next year. I co-wash 2x a week and shampoo & DC on Sundays. I apply MT daily, baggie at night to retain moisture and I spray a mixture of S-Curl and Infusium if not 2x a day at least daily. Oh and I am getting the edges redone every 2 weeks and only keeping the braids in 8 weeks at a time. Once out I will baby my hair for a month and then back in braids they go.

i wore braids for 7 years... and i only took time out twice. i would wear my hair out for like 6 weeks to 3 months max. i didn't take the absolute best care of my hair... but i didn't have too many problems. i kept my scalp moisturized. i didn't put oil in daily. more like when i remembered a few times a week or evne less than that. i washed my hair once a week... or less... and i tied a satin scarf on my head religiously every night... or slept on a satin pillow case and tied my own hair back with my own braids.

never had alopecia problems. if the braider did it too tight, i would get tiny bumps but they were gone within a week. but i had good braiders who knew my hair.

my hair grew a ton. i chopped it a few times b/c i didn't care. nobody could see it. :) my hair grew from chin length to APL in 2.5 years. my edges thinned out a little bit in one spot on the right side. but that's starting to come back in.
