....so I don't know why it took me so long to give it a try. I have tried moisturizer after moisturizer and some of them would satisfy me for a while but nothing lasted long enough to become a die hard staple for me. I would wash, deep condition, moisturize and seal with just "so so" satisfaction as to the feel of my hair afterwards. What I have been looking for is a moisturizer that makes my hair soft and supple all day and just could not find one to my liking until now. It leaves my hair feeling better than anything else I have tried.

Ladies, I am talking about plain old water. I have figured out what works for me is water sealed with my new oil mix. I think that the commercial moisturizers that I have tried just have too much other "stuff" in them that gets in the way of letting the ultimate moisturizer, water, do its job effectively.

This may not be news to some of you. And some of you may say that I just haven't found a good commercial moisturizer, which could be correct because I haven't tried them all or even that many. But I have decided to forgo trying any more commercial moisturizers, at least for a while, because water really works for me.

If you've tried "everything" and nothing is working for you, give water a try. Leave out the leave-ins and the like. Seal with oil. You might be surprised :yep:.

AHeadOfCoils, that's interesting. I just use room temperature water. Sometimes I spray it on and sometimes I pour it my hand and rub it around like its a product :look:. Otherwise I just apply my oil to hair that's wet from a poo or co-wash.

DrC, when I was in the beginning of my HHJ, I tried tea tree and rosemary oil mixed with motions leave-in at the suggestion of a youtuber. It was alright. Do you find that the tea tree has a moisturizing affect for you?

sonychari yes. For some strange reason, my hair loves it. Tea Tree oil makes my curls pop and make my strands retain more moisture.
I use it 2 times a month. sometimes in my ACV or Witch Hazel rinse.

4mia, I am relaxed. Water works especially well a few days after my last wash and my hair starts looking flat and bodiless. It makes it look full again.

Do you spritz water on your ends (with a water bottle?), seal and wrap at night? I can only imagine it working this way for someone who is relaxed like me...

What do you seal with?

But I am relaxed like you :yep: I do it in the morning but I will probably start doing it at night too. I spray or rub water in the new growth and throughout the length of my hair (the same way I would any other moistu, seal with oil, and go about my day.

My oil is a mix: Castor oil, argan oil, wheatgerm oil, olive oil, and lanolin. It think my oil mix in conjunction with the water might be what makes the water works so well for me. The castor oil and lanolin makes the mix thick, thus a good sealer.

Doesnt the water and oil mix together? I might give this a try

Water and oil can't mix and they repel each other. In this case, oil would be used to close the cuticle so that water (which is the key ingredient for moisture) doesn't escape.

Water should be our key moisturizers since it is the only thing that can completely penetrate our cuticles. Most moisturizers just sit on the hair shaft since the molecules are too big for them to enter and moisturize the inside. Adding "moisturizing" products without adding water first wouldn't give the full benefits of having moisturized hair. :yep:

("The Science of Black Hair" book talks a lot about this. I strongly recommend it!)

I have noticed recently that when I'm in the shower my hair feels so soft when rinsing with plain warm water before I put anything in it. I always said I wish I could moisturize with it but I think my hair would be extra crispy when it dries. I've noticed that if I mix a little of my neutragena leave in with water in a spray bottle and use it daily it cuts down on breakage and makes my hair super soft.

I've noticed this too. Water mixed with a little bit of oil works well for me. My hair loves water straight up. I tend to seal with a creamy conditioner and oil afterwards though.

DrC, what's this witch hazel rinse?

sonychari sometimes I use witch hazel to cleanse my scalp. I don't use shampoo because it tears my hair and scalp up something serious :perplexed It would leave me with a major dandruff problem and a disgusting gray film on my scalp that did not go away. (ugh!) I believe the sulfates and chemicals in shampoo were too harsh on my hair :nono:

I put witch hazel in a nozzle bottle mixed with some water, a few drops of tea tree oil, leave it on for about 15 to 30 minutes, rinse with warm water then follow up with a conditioner.

I also use ACV (apple cider vinegar) or a shakakai bar to clean my hair. Whichever is available.

Yes, warm water. Before my hair was color-treated, it was very low-porosity and water had a hard time getting into my strands. I found that cold water would seal my hair's cuticle and prevent any water/moisture to get in. I would be left w/ rock hard hair. :nono:

...Tell me why that took me so long to comprehend right now? I was like "IT CLOSES YOUR CUTICLES?!" Knowing damn well I rinse my DC out with cold water to close my cuticles. :imstupid:

yep water is wonderful!!!!my hair feels dry i wash it ( every 5-7 days) and it feels moist & soft again before i layer my styling products on damp hair.

sonychari when I wash my hair, I let it air dry. Water is not trapped in my strands to where it would mat up. Now if I put my hair in braids or plaits and use water as a spritzer or if my hair gets wet and air drys while still in those braids and plaits, I mind as well get the scissors because it will be a big mess. SMDH

Thank you everyone for all your posts. I put water in my hair and then sealed with oil at around 8 o'clock this morning. It is now 5:30 pm (my time) and my hair is still soft and supple, which is a BIG deal for me because I haven't really experienced this with any other moisturizer.

I tried to fight this early on in my journey ya know, cuz I don't have "that kinda hair" that you're supposed to constantly wet, so I never did. I was acually *terrified* of water getting anywhere near my head :look: :lachen:

Now, I make sure that water touches my hair nearly everyday, either right before I moisturize and seal, or even if I'm just spritzing my hair with a spray bottle full of plain water. The absolute best feeling is letting warm water run through my braids in the shower. They are sooooo soft afterwards....:yep:

water sealed with castor oil :lick: i'm convinced if this is all i had i'd still have retained my length and could make it to waist length. the other stuff is useful if i don't want my hair too wet or don't want to much reversion. QB AOHB is the closest to that combo

Does anybody moisturize with a water spritz and then seal with just coconut oil? I've got some coconut oil here that needs get used somehow.
