Little Girl Gone Natural- Then a Mother's Mistake (Youtube Video)

This is ridiculous! All I can think of is that her mother must have left the relaxer on too long and did not properly wash it out with a neutralizer nor did she properly condition her hair.

I have never seen results like this from a virgin hair relaxer!

I do hope now that her mommy has learned a valuable lesson to leave well enough alone and allow her daughter to continue on the natural journey until she is wise enough, along with knowlegdable enough to properly put a relaxer in.

Her hair will grow back, but I can only imagine the trauma that child has gone through behind this mistake.:wallbash::nono:

Why relax her childs hair when she already knew she was tenderheaded and winced at just having braids put in?

Every mother should save this vid for when their daughter first asks for perm. It should put them off for a good while.

so sad. I loved her thick twists before. That lady is a true friend and hopefully she can help nurse the child's hair back to it's original glory.

What are you rocking now? Just curious, I'm
not against relaxers but I am usually in awe when people trust relaxers when they (relaxers) have been an enemy to their hair in the past.

My aunt shaved my head (my sister as well) for me when I was around...10 or 12, I can't remember. I do remember crying a lot, it was pretty messed up. I got over it relatively quickly because I was young, but I never thought about being any other way. My parents never really forced me to get a relaxer, but they never deterred me either. I just thought that something was wrong with my hair because everyone else had relaxers and their hair was fine. :ohwell: So after some time in braids, I relaxed again and continued. But relaxers have never been a friend to my hair, even up until after I found the boards and got more information on how to take care of my hair. I am now fully natural (have been for about a year and a half), and I'm creeping towards APL, whereas my hair has been stuck at necklength when relaxed for years.

I also have nothing against relaxers or people who relax to be honest with you, especially when they have really nice hair and clearly know how to take care of it. Even now I still sometimes miss the straightness (I suspect I have the type of hair that heattrains very well but does not do so well with just occasional straightening, major reversion almost instantly)
But relaxers have never worked for me so I just cut them out :spinning:

I think that's why alot of mothers relax their childs hair. Straight hair = more manageable = no tangles/knots/pulling/tugging. Not saying the rational is correct, but in my experience, many mothers relax for this reason.

I feel the same way about my hair! I was natural most of my life, but I always wore braids and some form of extensions and never embraced my natural hair, because I never saw anyone wear their hair out very nicely when it was natural. Even when I tried in high school, it kind of turned out to be a mess. So when I turned 21 I got a relaxer, it was hell ever since. So I began to work on this natural hair care, and though I am currently not wearing my hair out, when it gets to 16 months natural, I will try to start poking my hair out.

Great story! Thanks for sharing :-)

OMG that is TRAGIC!!!

I, for the LIFE of me, will never understand why people will put a relaxer on a childs hair or anyones hair if they have no clue as to what they are doing. :nono:

Hopefully whoever did that will NEVER do it again and Im sure the little girls hair will grow back even more glorious than it was before.

The sad part is, they THINK they know what they're doing. :nono:

OMG!! I was crying girl!! That was so sad and unfortunate! Her mother should have been ashamed of herself!! She wanted to see how much length she had, I bet!!

Ah yes. Ye ol' Just For Me trick. Mothers think it's going to be a blessing, but alas, curses abound.

ugh, my hair was never the same after that. I must admit it was long and luxurious for a good couple of months, then the breakage started happening. I'm just now recovering...

I hope this girl is learning early how to care for her natural hair and hopefully just uses this as a very valuable lesson and comes to appreciate just how beautiful her hair can be without all the shenanigans. God bless her.

Why does it matter?! Black mothers have the same screwed up hair practices too.

Anyway, sorry for the child. I'm glad whoever it is is back taking care of her hair. I can't wait to see an update.

:look: It really doesn't matter, BUT I can see how a white mother may not know as much about african american hair. :) Then decided to perm it and that's it. No conditioning it etc.. THAT'S WHY I ASKED. :)

omg! Poor baby, her hair was just fine and so sweet looking before...her mother just needs to allow all that relaxed hair to be cut off and sport a little afro for a while. I don't think all those extensions are going to help her hair in the long run...
Well from what I understand the before pictures were after the poster had been doing the childs hair with extensions for a while and she had finally gained enough growth that the child was willing to wear her own hair out in the twist. Her hair in the before pics looks wonderful and also you can see progress after the poster was caring for her hair again ( after the childs mother applied realxer) so it looks as though she knows what she is doing.

That poor lil girl!:ohwell: I had no choice in the matter when I was relaxed by my mom. It's a miracle I never had the little one's result because each touch up, mom relaxed all my hair. :look: I believe my hair is even more relaxer resistant than it is now. Thank goodness.:nono:

You do realize that a lot if not most black mothers..especially from the old school doesn't know about conditioning..they think grease is a moisturizer. I think ignorance about black hair doesn't discriminate based on race.

OMG I almost started crying. That is just sad. Her hair was so pretty before and she wasn't even the one styling so why the desire to relax it. Maybe she thought it would be easier to care for on her own? I don't get it.

I don't think it's so much that the relaxer damaged the daughter's hair - the mother probably didn't know how to take of it after she relaxed it. Personally, I think relaxed hair is harder to maintain than natural hair which is why I won't be relaxing my daughter's hair anytime soon.

Dang! That was sad. And it was so dry! I wonder if her mom was white?

I have no idea, but I don't think it matters. Most have the women on this Board and IRL whose hair was damaged by relaxers as a child where relaxed by their Black Mothers or Black family members. Hair Ignorance has nothing to do with race.

I have a white friend who can braid, cornrow and do weaves. I can't do any of those things.:nono: I guess I'm white.:look::lachen:

That was so sad. I had the same thing happen to me when I was little, but I also had scabs. Not until I grew up and started taking care of my own hair and decided to go natural did my hair start to grow back.

wow poor girl
yeah the mom should have definitely taken her to a professional because it was gonna be her first perm. smh
