List your best Lye relaxer brands please

i may have to check out revlon realistic since so many here have tried it and liked it. i wanted to try affirm but i just saw that the smaller tub is no lye and the bigger one with lye is 35 dollars. the salon i go to that uses affirm uses the one for sensitive scalp and even if i ask for affirm i am not going to be sure unless i grill them that its the lye version. i wanted to bring my own relaxer because i want to know what is being put in my head. my old stylist for more than a decade did my hair and never told me what she used. so i wanted to know without a doubt what was being used. plus i want something that is readily available. i am not fond of having to special order stuff. and the salons that have been recommened that use it charge 80-100 dollars for a touchup. /images/graemlins/shocked.gif not when i pay 40-50. sooooooo i may check out revlon since it is readily available unless i find a reasonably priced salon that uses affirm.

anyone have a picture of the revlon relaxer? the one i saw was in a white tub and it had black writing. God bless you all.

i've been getting my hair relaxed for 14 years, and the only two that i've ever used are Dark & Lovely No Lye and Affirm Lye. did someone say creature of habit? yeah, i think that was me...

anyway, both of these have worked for me. i actually only switched to lye after all the stuff i read on the boards. the Dark & Lovely never made my hair dry, but i suspect it's because of how seldom i retouch.

That's interesting adrienne, because dark and lovely didn't do anything at all to straighten my hair. All it did was make it very dry. When I used No Lye relaxers, the only products that worked were Gentle Treatment and Soft n' Beautiful. My hair grew long while using those and I never had a problem with breakage or anything. However, I did notice a difference after switching to lye. That was about 15 years ago. At that time, if I wouldn't have found out that using lye was supposed to be better, I'd still be using no lye and would probably still be happy with the results.

azul, Here are some pictures of Revlon's relaxers. You have to make sure that you read the box and get the LYE version.

everywhere i have seen it its been in the tubs you have there. so i guess i did see the correct one. i'm so confused as to what to do. i cant find the affirm, now i see a thread about mizani but revlon is easier to find.

o/t i was scanning through shamboosie's book and he said you are supposed to use a conditioning lye relaxer. how can you tell its a conditioning lye relaxer? would revlon be considered one? /images/graemlins/confused.gif God bless you all.

I haven't read that book, but the Revlon relaxer says "conditioning" on the box.

i went into a bss and i was reading the ingredients to different relaxers. i saw haiwaiian silky and the ingredients seemed good but since i have not heard of anyone using this i was hesistant to even consider it. also i saw a box of revlon realistic but it was all black. it had the neutralizing shampoo and stuff in the box. i think if i do decide to try the revlon i will just pick up the one in the tub.

i also saw dudleys,mizani and affirm in tubs but this was a bss and i remember someone saying they are only sold in salons. btw these all were the lye version.

I have never went to any of them before. it seems like if i cant find a place that uses affirm i will just try the revlon since it is easier to find.

No not yet Allandra. AD went and enquired in a ghetto salon about ordering some in so we might be able to get our hands on it. If not I'm leaning towards the Arosci which is made by revlon.

I was told that all relaxers (yes, even no-lye) contain some type of lye.

I think that website is mixed up/confusing. I don't know if they make a "no-lye" version of the one in the grey box, but I have used the lye version in the grey box. They do make a lye and no lye in the white box/red writing. The drop down box says "grey box" is lye and white box is no lye.

oooooooooooo okay i see. why did i think that was black. anywho i did see that one in the bss but i was unsure if this was the one people were using. okay now i get it. overall it would be a lot cheaper then what i paid for my motions because i had to buy the oil moisturizer kit and the shampoo and conditioner. now i am stuck with a big bottle of neutralizing shampoo and the moisture silk conditioner. can you still use the neutralizing shampoo for maybe a clarifyer or something. its just sitting on dresser collecting dust. I use the motions oil moisturizing relaxer/regular lye.
It leaves my hair soft shiny and moist, I had been using no lye for a long time, but my new growth and hair was always dry when it was time for a t/u. I have used the affirm relaxer a couple of years ago, I went to a salon and she recom' a diff relaxer, she says that affirm leaves your hair dry. I did notice that my hair was dry while I was using it, but because I heard that it's a good product I did not want to switch. Today I'm very happy that I switched. HTH
