I know I've never posted in here but I've lurked and I started greasing my hair like crazy. Seeing what heavy product usage would do and honestly it thickened up my ends , kept my hair constantly moisturized and reduced knots.

Grease has been working really well for me for the last three weeks or so. I'm using the Softee Indian Hemp on damp hair. It keeps my ends from tangling in my bun, makes my hair seem thicker and sleeker, and just...works!

I have also been experimenting with how often to shampoo to keep my scalp clear of petrolatum.

I haven't got it all figured out yet, but for the first time in a long time I feel like my hair is on track again and it's all thanks to old school grease. Who knew?
 
I've been low key following this thread. I purchased some grease, Dax with compounded lanolin and I really like it y'all! I'm first to admit that at the beginning of my journey I would turn up my nose at the taught of using grease. but it's all about being open right? I've been washing, Dcing and if I use a super moisturizing conditioner I will omit the leave-in and only use the grease. Results? Soft, smooth moisturized hair for 5 days! No need to touch up in between. I will continue doing this, I find that grease is a more effective sealant for me than shea butter alone. I will be making my own batches soon.
 
Bought me another grease. APB's "Not Easily Broken" pomade. I'm starting to think I may only use grease on my edges and ends. My scalp gets so itchy sometimes when I put oil or grease on it. I need to think about that.

I'm really liking Indian hemp too. Smells good and works. I have been doing the same thing this past month. Wash , d.c, leave in, apply dime size amount of grease to damp ends.

My scalp hates grease. Definitely something for the length of hair rather than scalp for a lot.

I do still try to grease and oil my scalp only because it does get dry at times. But my scalp quickly reminds me that's a no go

I stopped using grease for the past three weeks because I had been using heat on my hair. I'm going back to grease soon because I definitely see a difference in my hair. I'm not the type to moisturize and seal daily so grease was perfect for me.

Has anyone tried braid outs, twist outs, etc with grease? I usually keep my hair in a bun or braid if I'm using grease.
 
I used to do braid outs with grease quite successfully.

On another note, it appears I can no longer use grease on my crown area. I dont know what temper tantrum my hair is pulling lately but she better behave before I shave her all off again. I've already cut a whole heap of hair off at the start of the month.. I'm not above being bald til I die!

Hmm I may be off the grease. I used it for about two months and loved it at first. For the last two weeks or so my hair has been feeling...off. It feels ok when the grease is on it (though not as good as when I first started using grease), but once I shampoo it's like I can feel all of the damage and dryness the grease was covering up. I had gotten a little overzealous with my application though lol.

Anyway I'm going to experiment with some more natural grease alternatives that don't have quite the same staying power. I'm definitely not warning anyone away from grease, but I do think too much of it can be harmful (as with anything) and you've got to find a balanced way to use it that works for your hair.

Anyone have the same experience? Or have some grease-alternative recommendations?

For me castor oil has always been a great grease alternative. It's thick enough to give my hair a heavy seal and hold in the moisture and washes out pretty easy. However, I've learned that with grease and castor oil it's best to use on wet or damp freshly washed hair and then use lighter sealers until you wash again.
 
Thanks for the suggestion charmtreese . I've been thinking about getting some JBCO for my edges - maybe I'll invest in a bigger bottle and use it as an overall sealant.

I have baby fine and fragile coily hair, so right now I'm experimenting heavily to try and figure out what works for me.
 
Reviving this thread because I recently bought some Blue Magic Coconut Grease because the natural stuff no longer cuts it. My hair is starting to laugh at shea butter and EVCO as sealants. I sealed with grease exclusively for two years when I first began my HHJ and my hair was pillow soft. I never had an issue with build up. I shampoo twice a week and clarify monthly. I never use sulfates. Im excited to see how tomorrow's twist out will go. Im finding that as my hair gets longer, cheapie, synthetic products work better.

So I fell out with the grease on my natural and guess what happened?

SSK galore and some minor breakage. :nono:

Back on the grease train. Oils and butters are just not enough.

Its a good thing im not averse to frequent dusting and SnD. Dang. This could have been a set back. Caught it in time tho. Whew!

I used some grease to lay down my edges after they got wet from the shower cap. I'm trying to preserve my straight style. It worked so well.
 
Man, I used to hate grease, but it is such an amazing sealant for my mini-braids. I've had them up since 10/12/14 and every once in awhile I'll take one down to check on it. I'm telling y'all avj / filtered water, oil, butter and the blue colored Blue Magic grease on my ends is the business!
 
Just purchased Blue magic on Tuesday (the original blue one).

I wont be using it on my scalp.. but its already made a world of difference as a sealant and hair dressing.
 
Im a Nature's Blessings junkie now. I swear I have about 4 jars of that grease around this house. I absolutely love that stuff. I still use my sulfur 8 when my scalp acts up.
 
Yay, my favorite thread. :) Now that classes are over, I think I will spend some time doing mini braids to keep in for a few months. I still have my Grandma Wilkie's grease so I should be good to go.
 
I need grease more to keep moisture in during our super dry winters. My hair isless needy the rest of the year. However im now wondering if I should try it in my next roller set attempt to resist reversion or to weigh down a wng. Hmmmm
 
On the matter of grease, I've always kept it in my arsenal even when it wasn't PC to admit it. :giggle: I have different ones for different needs. I've mostly used the old standbys and not the new fangled ones. I experiment w/ various combinations of traditional grease and natural oils/self-made infusions. I'm particlarly fond of sulfur and pine tar ones if I'm having scalp issues.

If anyone likes Wondergro or old the Lustersilk Moisture Max (blue and white packaging) prods, grab them while you can cuz they ain't making them no more! :baby2::bling:

What?!?!?! No Wondergro?!?! The yellow one is my staple! This cant be happening!!!! :eek::cry3:

That's my fav too...the Pure Sulfur in the jar. You might be able to find it in BSS if you're in and around LA/Cali. I hope I'm wrong, but I haven't seen it in a minute here in the Midwest.
 
Im in cali and You are right!! Went to the. Bss yesterday and no Wondergro! There were just a few jars left of the purple one when for the last 5 years they had three 6 foot long shelves of the entire line.

This is a tragedy!
