Could a new eyelash-lengthening drug curb the envy of stubby-lashed ladies? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has green-lighted Latisse, which lengthens, thickens and darkens eyelashes when dabbed daily on the lash line on the lids with a disposable wand.

The med, called Latisse, should be available by March from a doctor or with a prescription from one. Price tag: $120 for a month’s supply. According to manufacturer Allergan, the drug usually nets results two to four months after users start it. Potential side effects: Some 4 percent of users experience eye itching and redness, and it may also temporarily darken the skin of the eyelid, according to the company.

The active ingredient in Latisse is
bimatoprost, a compound derived from fatty acids that bind to receptors in the eyelashes that may be involved in the development and re-growth of hair follicles. Allergan has used bimatoprost since 2001 in Lumigan, an Rx eye drop that lowers eye pressure in people with glaucoma. (Glaucoma is a disease that may cause vision loss from damage to the optic nerve if too much pressure builds up in the eye.)

The company began studying the potential of using a lower dose of topical bimatoprost to stimulate eyelash growth after Lumigan users developed unusually lush lashes. It's specifically being marketed as a once-a-day med to treat eyelash
hypotrichosis, or lack of hair growth.

It's not clear exactly why Latisse promotes eyelash growth, but the company speculates that the drug may increase the length and amount of hair that sprouts during the growth cycle. It’s possible that the drug may also spur eyebrow and scalp hair growth,
doctors told the Wall Street Journal. But Allergan spokesperson Heather Katt says the company hasn't explored using Latisse for those purposes.

The cosmetics industry has long been vying for a product that held out the promise of long, thick lashes. But consumers need to be careful and remember that vanity may come at a cost.

Last year,
U.S. Marshals seized 12,682 applicator tubes ($2 million worth) of another product, Age Intervention Eyelash, which the FDA said contained bimatoprost that caused swelling of the eyes in some users. (Swelling isn’t listed as a side effect of Latisse, which contains a smaller amount of bimatoprost than Lumigan and isn't placed directly into the eye). Age Intervention Eyelash's manufacturer, Jan Marini Skin Research, stopped selling the product, though it maintains that it never contained bimatoprost.

Allergan sued 11 companies for alleged patent infringement for using bimatropost to promote lash growth; the suit is scheduled to go to trial in November, according to Katt.

She says the company dropped its claim against Jan Marini Skin Research, of San Jose, Calif., and three other companies after they acknowledged they had violated Allergan's patents on bimatropost and agreed to stop distributing products containing it. Allergan also dismissed the suit against a supplier of the ingredient and two companies it determined weren't infinging on its patent.

Sounds like the OP is trying to start a new bandwagon:lol:

Good luck to all of you who jump on it. I will sit this one out!

It wouldn't really be cost effective and after you stop using it the hair falls out/returns to its normal growth cycle. So with lash use if you stop using this as the "new improved lashes" fall out, your regular growth would resume if you discontinued the product.

My Derm sells it for $90.00 for a 30 day supply. It like a bunch of soaked q-tips--two to the pack where you use one on each eyelid for 30 days.

I call it rogaine for lashes. Of course their are negatives...I suggest reading up and determining if you're willing to accept the cons. One possible reaction is a darkening of the lid area from the drug.

my derm does offers as well--my lashes r hella long so i dont need it--but i put my aunt on to it and she loves her lashes-----the results are dif for everyone--

There is a permanent side effect that I don't like about this. The side effect is permanent darkening above the eyelids. PERMANENT!!!!!

There are also less damaging ones too. One is irritation of the eyes and eyelids. Burning and itching.

Please you guys, forget about putting this on your scalp. I definitely wouldn't put this on my scalp. At some point y'all are gonna have to stop creating and jumping on bandwagons. I don't know about y'all, but I want to get to WL soon. Bandwagons just hold you back.

I would exercise caution with this product, only because it can affect your EYES!! The part of the body that helps you SEE the world around you. :look:

Just saying, not trying to bash it or anything. It looks promising. The side effects creep me out though!

im currently using it, been using it for 2 weeks..

so far i see some light improvment.. but i should see full results in 8 weeks so, ill let u girls know..

i've had no eye lid darkening, no eye irritation, nothing.. feels like wetting my lids with water..

The darkening of eyelids isn't permanent but it can make blue eyes brown. It causes darkening of the iris. I use it it makes your lashes super long.

Didn't they also mention on the commercial the potential side-effect of permanently darkening your iris with brown pigment or something like that? That scared me enough!

I have brown eyes so it can't darken it really. Now if you have grey, blue or green eyes procede with caution.

:yep: I'm with you.
All those side effects in the commercial sound scary. I would not put this stuff anywhere near my eyes.

I got the same results using Skin, Nail, and Hair vitamins within a month. I think the commercial said full affects are seen in 6 months (?). I wouldn't but this stuff anywhere near my eyes. The side affects are just too scary.

Oh no ma'am. You can get the same result with a mascara wand (even if you have to recycle, just cleanse thoroughly) and evoo with a bit of vitamin E. I wouldn't dare use this crap on or near my eyes.
