Ladies transitioning without a BC I need ya help...

Well I've been a member of LHCF for about 10 months now and in that time I have acquired such a vast amount of knowledge regarding haircare that I feel like a walking dictionary/encyclopedia. But after giving it A LOT of thought, I've decided to go natural and transition without BCing. For all you ladies who have done so by using braids and/or weaves what are some tips you wish you had known during your transition?

I am planning on transitioning until I have a good 6-8 inches of natural hair; I am currently 3 months post (~1.5 in NG) while doing mini trims/chops. I know there is a wealth of information on the site, and I plan on sifting through all of it in due time.

bumping...trying to also do the same...

i am 5 months into my transition and getting more excited about big chopping...but right now im doing it with sew in weaves. Hopefully by the time i take this sew in it'll be about 7 1/2 or 8 months. So i'll have more growth and may from there start trimming some of my relaxed ends and get another sew in. With my first sew in to keep the itching down also i would use a liquid based solution(either B&B Serum/Den1's Growth Serum/Infusium mixed with Surge) I only washed my last weave once--im lazy when it comes to having weaves in.

My only advice is...if you are going to use braids or weaves PLEASE take care of your hair under there. I am currently transitioning as well (entering 9th month) and I started out with weaves. I suffered ALLOT of breakage...Did not hurt me that bad because the part that was breaking was the relaxed ends anyway...but now I am a little hesitant to get another sew in. So if you DO do it that way...PLEASE keep your hair moisturized under there.:yep:

Exactly! Moisture is the key.

I transitioned with braids and a sew-in. You have to keep your hair moisturized especially with a sew-in. In the end I had excellent growth. The ends suffered but they got chopped off anyway.

Thanks ladies. I am actually planning on braiding it up and wearing wigs instead of sew ins. Sew-ins is one of the reasons I ended up finding this place so I'm definately not thinking about putting those in again:nono:

I agree with the other ladies. I am currently transitioning (4 months) and am in a weave. I take care of my own hair my oiling my scalp every night (or every other night) using one of those color tint bottles. I wash/condition my hair using the same type of bottle, using a half and half method (half shampoo, half water; half conditioner/half water). Rinse all that out and then wash/cw the weave.

I just starting doing a deep conditioning treatment (using the same half and half method) and sitting under the dryer for 15 minutes.

I would say make sure you moisturize. Espeically that new growth. My hair was really dull/dry at first when I bced. I think it was because I wasn't really getting the conditioner in there with all the shrinkage.

I'm 4 months into transitioning. I decided not to do weaves or braids. I'm really learning a lot about taking care of my natural hair this way. It's growing like crazy and keeping it moisturized is the key!!!

I am 40 weeks (9 months) into my transition. I do not plan to BC.
Moisture is definitely the key. Make Co washing your best friend. If you haven't yet...you will soon.

Also, Don't try to comb your hair dry unless it has been flat ironed.

My favorite way to detangle is lying on my back in the bathtub with my hair submerged in the water. The comb goes through much easier like this.

I can't even comb it in the shower anymore. My hair just laughs if I try that.
