Simply put......nearly EVERYTHING!!!! Smh.

Now in Ja I can access Kinky Curly, Curl Junkie, Jessicurl, Giovanni and Jane Carter stuff locally (they are all at one...ONE store. If you don't live in Kingston :nono: Sorry for you), as well as dried herbs and SOME oils. But the hair products are hella expensive. Seriously. Sometimes it works out cheaper if I buy them online and ship them to Ja myself. I spotted some Miss Jessie's products the other day too.....that baby butter cream was more than my weekly gas bill. Ain't no way I'm buying that! Nuh uh.
 
Co-sign on EVERYTHING! The few products that are available are 3x the price I could get it in the states so when I travel I try to stock up on my staples.

It sucks because I can't just try a new product as often as I'd like..

I have "access" to everything as I order online as many ladies even in the US do

HOWEVER i ship to my sister in Fl and either wait till someone is coming to Jamaica and takes them for me, or i get them when either myself or my BF go to Fl

I wish I cud get my staples at on the ground store .... I secretly drink the haterade for those ladies that have an Oyin outlet close to them.
 
Some UK online shops are doing a great job in filling in the gap but, I wish someone would stock SheaMoisture and some other handmade products such as Shescentit, Afro Detangler and Hair Oil (Wanakee) products.

You can now buy SheaMoisture products from Gidore but the prices are much higher compared to the US price.

I would love to try the curl enhancing smoothie but its not worth £17.50.

Why is there only one store? If there is demand for hair products, why aren't people opening multiple locations? Are the Asians blocking Black Jamaicans from entering the BSS there as well?
 
RossBoss how to put this.....Only a certain segment of the population would be willing to spend money on hair products like these - those who have been exposed to and are interested in healthy hair care. I have found that here, and back home in B'dos most people are far more interested in obtaining a style, than healthy hair. So majority of people would spend their last dime buying weave, but they will balk at paying extra $$ for the brands mentioned above. Cause let's face it they can get the 'big name brands' - like softsheencarson, pantene, african pride etc virtually ANYWHERE and for a lot cheaper. And it's what they are used to.

So I understand why there's not a plethora of stores like Nettle & Moss (the Ja store carrying curl junkie etc). Also, big distribution companies will pay a LOT less with regards to duties to ship in the softsheencarson etc. The lady who owns the store, I'm sure it's not as easy for her. Oh! And here in Ja the typical store which sells hair and hair products cheap are Asian-owned as far as I have seen - they are called wholesales I think......and everything is behind a cage, even the persons working. You can't use debit or credit cards. Cash only.

I myself am actually looking into opening a similar store back home for my Bajan sisters....BUT the cost involved in doing do is mind-boggling AND I have to consider what will my return/profit will be. Will it even be feasible etc. It's not looking so at this moment. Which I am very disappointed about. :ohwell:
 
I get pretty much everything I need between the BSS and internet. A lot of my products are professional and easily available, Aveda / Matrix biolage. Most others herbs, sulphur, oils etc I get easily from UK based companies online or ebay.

Like bajandoc86 when I'm in JA I stock up on some stuff like Mizani and maybe some other things I probably don't use anymore lol but are popular. That's when I visit JA of course.

However, if you're going to sell the above items in the Caribbean I'm not sure how popularly used they are retail wise. I know that some salons buy them for their use on customers and I know that you can get Mixed Chicks and Morracan Oil for at home use.

Bajan86 I hope you can work out somthing, I think it would be a gret venture if you get your toe into the water early and create a loyal nieche market before anyone else gets the idea :yep:
 
I agree with the poster that wrote 'everything'. I have access to only giovanni and aubrey organics [not the full range just two shampoo and conditioner] from only one seller who doesn't even have a store. I communicate via e mail. I am doing fine with those few, haven't tried anything else and its certainly better than what I was using; sulphates and cones. I pay 2-3times the retail prices I see in US sites, sometimes more. Sometimes I wish I could try other products to see if there are better noes, but honestly my hair is doing fine, moisturized retaining length etc.

ETA; I agree about most women not wanting to spend a lot of money on hair products, the cheap ones work and they don't see anything wrong with their hair, even when it remains at neck/shoulder length for decades. APL and longer is uncommon for most women I know with type 4 hair [some tribes with type 3 and a few type 4 achieve long lengths]. I always thought my hair couldn't possibly grow long and didn't even worry about it. I discovered hair boards less than 2yrs ago.

I stockpile, literally my sisters basement is full of boxes.

I pretty much have a whole suitcase dedicated to hair things on my return journey.
 
I can get pretty much everything on eBay, which has the cheaper shipping for my country (I'm in South America). To answer your question: raw unrefined shea butter, jojoba oil, tea tree oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, castor oil, argan oil, essential oils, henna, cassia, shikakai, sulfate free shampoos, good thick coneless conditioners and masks, vegetable protein treatments, coneless leave-ins and gels, hair accessories (friendly), flexi rods, hair friendly rollers (magnetic, steam?), bonnet hair dryer, hooded dryer, heat caps, silk bonnets, scarves and pillowcases (not synthetic), wooden/bone/horn wide tooth combs, tangle teezer, BBB, hair dryers with a lot of different settings/cool, color B4/Oops, vegetable hair dyes, prepared lemon juice.

Some of it I can find in my country, but mostly online and not easily. And sometimes overpriced.
 
I'm happy with what I have access to in Paris.
I brought my products in Mexico so I don't miss much.
 
Its hard getting decent products here at good prices ... BTW I just re-subscribed to LHCF, been off a couple of years
 
@bajandoc86 there is a store on Kings Plaza < Constant Spring Rd> That has Mixed Chicks> They also sell Giovani and Matrix products. The store is on the first floor. Somehow I cant remember the name right now. There are also stores named Sharells and Cherry's, these stores are not set up like a wholesale and they take cards (debit and credit)

The BSS on constant spring rd has the cream of nature argan oil line. I have see Hawaiian Silky 14 in 1 moisturizer too.

what is the Address of the store you mentioned?
 
sevetlana Nettle & Moss is at 44 Lady Musgrave Road. I think I know the BSS you are referring to - Discount Beauty Supplies....in the same plaza as Bryan' Photo place. I am constantly in there. Lol. They recently started selling Miss Jessies and Mixed Chicks.
 
The only thing that I wish the UK had was Neutrogena Triple Moisture. I can buy it on Amazon but it's really expensive.
For everything else I can just go to Pak's and find what I need.
 
I'm in the UK and am happy with everything I have access to.

I only wish prices were more competitive as they are in the UK.

I pretty much can get all the popular items; I don't mind using e-tailers as I live away from good shops. I also have learnt to use items other than those purely marketed to the ethnic market because BSS are not competitively pricing their products.
 
nothing really because even if it is sold in the UK the prices are going to be double and then some the price of what its sold in the states:nono:
 
all the nice natural stuff, like beautiful curls from wholefoods, frankly i would prefer a shop i could visit than buy online,
 
The only thing that I would really love are Dominican products, if I had easy (cheap) access to those I'd be set for LIFE. In order for me to buy Latin American products I have to pay an arm and a leg for shipping. A $12 bottle of conditioner would end up being ~$30 after shipping and handling! It SUCKS!
