I lived in Korea in 1993/94 and black culture was the rage even then among Koreans, esp. teen boys (Karl Kani and Cross Colours knock-offs were the hot items), to the point that once I saw a Korean teenage boy sporting a pink and green AKA cap! Of course, he had no idea what it meant, all he knew was that it was related to black culture LOL

ETA I wonder if Chris Rock will have to do a follow-up to "Good Hair" in a few years showing African texture hair being a hot seller!

The latest rage in Korea is the "reverse perm" or afro perm and i must say - the results are quite striking but I still cant help asking myself........WHY????

saw a few oriental looking guys with afro looking hair yesterday at the grocery store, i was confused, thought they were mixed race( but didnt want to stare too much) but they didnt look it , they were also dressed in hip up like clothes, this clarifies things now, its strange to see actaully but still funny

Hmmmm, i think this is more limited to korea rather than china. In china, as far as i know, they are more concerned with getting their hair dead straight and use relaxers to straighten their hair even more.

I always see chinese people in the sallys in london, looking at black hair care products, buying the relaxers and all sorts.

The fact is, that they want to be different. Stand out. Their culture, their look, is so to the younger generation. They are tired of looking the same as every one. I don't think they want "to be black", just different.

I see this alot with the Japanese people on campus and even when I went to Japan awhile back. So this really isn't surprising. I hear it's really expensive though.

It's not really a "NEW" trend though. It's cool that another culture wants to pick up a style that s so ethnically the opposite of their own. It a compliment and a real testament to our own. The girl looks kind of cute. The guys could pull it off with a dark pair of shades.

Years ago, on 60 Minutes - I think, they interviewed kids in Japan who felt it was cool to be African American. It's difficult sometimes to understand how much we are appreciated outside of the US. I've always had good experiences outside of the US.
