So we all hear when people say "listen to your hair"
have you listened?
what did your hair tell you?

since starting my journey in 2007 I have learned...
my hair loves creamy conditioners
it prefers AVC to porosity control
not using baking soda to cleanse causes single strand knots
it likes products that contain shea butter, but not shea butter alone :lick:
its happier when stretched via rollersetting or twisting
I have to learn a great wash n go technique
it doesnt have to be washed once a week and still be ok
detangling is a must at least once a week
it gets thIcker before it gets longer.. (im in the thickening phase right now, HAD MY GROWTH PHASE IN THE SPRING-SUMMER)
it think thats all for now

i apologize if someone has already started a thread like this.. if they have please provide the link and i will post there :yep:

i guess porosity control is for relaxed heads only, didnt do jack for my hair... since ive stopped using acv and baking soda my hair sinks like an anchor!!!

Pre -poo me to help with detangling and moisturise my ends a few times a week. Keep up the AO shampoo and condish and the KBB milk or nectar as a leave-in. I love when yo use that shower comb on me.....keep up the good work, I'll be waist length before you know it!!!

my hair loves that shower comb too! i have to get another one my puppy chewed the original!

I've learned of Joico's 17 minute miracle. I can sub my own products but I follow the steps. My hair does best if every time I shampoo it I follow with porosity control, reconstructor, deep condition (even if the 5 minute kind) and my leave in. As long as I do these things, my hair is tangle free, knot free and will do whatever I ask. I didn't learn this until towards the end of the year. Looking forward to see what a full year of this kind of care will bring.

I've learned:

-MegaTek was doing more damage then good in the long run for my hair

-I'm 6 months post relaxer and managing my hair has NOT been an issue

-I will not be APL by Dec 2009.......lol

-My hair must be completely detangled before I wash or condition

I learned that my hair grows amazingly thick and long when I just leave it alone.

I've been on a personal weave challenge since June of 2009 that will continue until May 2010.

What's scaring me is that when I get to my goal length, what will I do then?????? Manipulation=Death for my hair. Do I continue to wear sew ins that are hitting my bank account pretty hard right now?

I've learned
pre pooing with regular (generic) mayo works wonders for detangling
cowashing is excellent for my transitioning hair
EVOO is a great source of moisture for my hair...not heavy or greasy like i thought it would be
I cannot go wrong with protective styling

2009 has been a GREAT hair year!
I stumbled upon one of Ateyaaa's videos in early February and was SHOCKED to see what black hair could be like. From there I was off to the races!

1. I love my hair.
2. I can control and turn around what was happening to my hair - the thinning out, the breakage, etc.
3. I forgot how to use the curling iron I used to use at LEAST once a day (with thousands of half inch broken hairs and white specks all over my shoulders each time.)
4. I learned "where the black women at" on the internet.
5. I learned to pay attention to hair... mine and others.
6. I can have swang when I want it.
7. My hair loves protein and moisture. But it's best to err on the side of moisture. My hair is pretty easy going... I just have to focus more on the ends and retaining length.
8. I don't need to go to the salon for relaxers. I don't need a relaxer. Like I said, my hair is fairly easy going.
9. I don't need to pay 60 dollars for color either. 6 dollar box of Miss Clairol gray touch up is more than enough.
10. My dog will eat my carouso rollers because they smell like the yummy stuff I've found to put in my hair... seyani butter, qp mango butter, etc.

I’ve learned that my hair loves the following :cloud9:;

- Hair Steamer; One of the best hair investments I've made, my hair has transformed into the best condition that it has ever been and it continues to improve with each use. It feel’s much softer, stronger, healthier, locks-in more moisture, shinier and detangles like a dream,

- ACV as a final rinse (75ml of ACV to 1 Litre of spring water); After incorporating this as my final step, honestly, my hair was soo soft, smooth, locked-in more moisture and was virtually tangle free. This is amongst some of the most important steps in my regimen that I've learned on this forum

- Qhemet Biologics’s Olive & Honey Hydrating Balm & Qhemet Biologics’s Burdock Root Butter Cream; The moisturising combination of the Qhemet Biologics product’s works wonderfully for my hair; it feel’s soo soft and hydrated all day

- Black Jamaican castor thinned with a little and avocado oil; Seals in moisture and makes my hair feel so soft!

- Joico K-pak Liquid Reconstructor; The combination of strength, softness and general feel of my hair after use is just amazing.

- Natural Shampoo bars; I love these bars, my hair feels wonderfully soft whilst washing.

- Being gentle with it.

- Low manipulation

I’ve learned that my hair dislikes the following :nono:;

- Shea butter on its own- too heavy for my hair and it just sits on top without moisturizing it.

- Coconut oil – makes it crispy

- AO GPB – Hated this

Bunning is awesome for length retention :yep:
Theres no need to trim 3 times a year -- kinda learnt that the hard way :p
My hair prefers moisture to protein....and I love indulging it :)
castor oil --- where have u been all my life!!?! :lachen:

My hair does not like being flat ironed. I may love the look, but it's hard on my hair. If I do flat iron it, I must take my time, use heat protectant, and use a low heat setting. In fall, I fell off from rollersetting and PS and that is why I am not APL right now...

My hair LOVES mango butter. Although the formula changed slightly, it will be my staple moisturizer.

Um, I also learned that it is better to spend the money on a quality relaxer than to cheat my hair.

My hair misses Dom products, but I have to use up what I have now.

Lastly, it's good to continue to take pics and lurk here and on fotki for inspiration. It's easy to lose sight of long-term goals...
