Hey all

This is my first post, but i've been admiring you ladies for some time now. Its been seven months since my BC and although I am quite happy being nappy, I noticed that when I do straighten my hair there are knots on some of my ends. I'm not sure of my hair texture but believe it to be 4 something :look:. How can I prevent this from happening. Keep in mind that i do baggy often and i just got a steamer so I plan on doing that weekly.

I used a flat iron to straighten and was very happy with the results...I'll post some pix a lil later.

What products did you use?

Did you properly detangle before flat ironing?

what brand flat iron did you use?

any heat protectants or serums?

I DC and detangled in sections, put shea butter leave in and rollerset. Before flat ironing ( with a vidal sasson ceramin iron) I used fantasia IC heat protectant. My hair feels super soft until I get to my ends.

Hmm...it seems like some nappturals have them and some don't. However, IMHO I have seen more 4a's complain about them than 4bs. I still suffer from them so I can't provide any advice. But I am sure some ladies will be in here with help.

Knots go hand-in-hand w/ having African Hair and so sometimes there isn't anything you can do to prevent them. Most people just either cut them off or learn to ignore them.

Hair Knotting

I don't get the knot problem often, I will though if I where my hair out too often. I don't really have much advice but wanted to comment on how nice your hair looks, it's very pretty.

Hi there,

I get these knots on the ends of my hair but can not for the life of my tell you why. My hair is very tightly coiled and what I am thinking is that the strands are getting wrapped/knotted around each other. I only wash/detangle once a week and still get the knots at the ends. I have even been getting trims(this has given me more knots so I am no longer doing this regularly). Honestly, I am at my wits ends and will be relaxing next month with the help of my dh.

I don't get knots often either but that's coz my hair is always braided. Now that I'm toying with twists and wearing it out, I expect to see them more.

I want to add twist to my regimen but it is soooo time consuming isn't it?

It may seem to be time consuming but once you have them in, you can style them in different ways and not have to comb your hair for days. I'm in them now and will probably wear the same do all week, only changing over the weekend...and since I braided the base, I may not need to redo the twists.

So if you can make time to do them--probably over the weekend--they are a fun way to wear your hair. Then when they start to look messy, you can rock a twist-out before retwisting or deciding what new style you want to rock.

Sounds like a good idea

When I do not detangle my hair often more than two times a week, I get the knots, and especially when I wear puffs or anything where my hair is not protected......You might have to cut them and nurse your ends reeeeeeeeeeal good:yep:

thanks I will try that. I was thinking that I was manipulating my hair too much b/c I was cw daily(and started doing it only once a week instead). My hair is just so tightly coiled that I am getting completely frustrated with it.

I hardly ever wear my puff out. I usually wear a fake puff and baggy underneath. I had braids all of July and August, so maybe my ends just needs some TLC

When you find the solution, let me know... I just cut mine off. All the time. Constantly. Snip. Cut. Cut.

Once this year I had sew-in and my hair was really matted afterwards and i had knots and tangles galore. Well, I put some amla oil on my hair (don't know why) and placed a shower cap on my head and went to bed. In the morning I woke up and co-washed and i did not have the slightest tangle or not and my hair felt so smooth and silky. maybe you can give it a try before you wash again!

Alma oil is an indian oil right? I think i may give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!!

I know about knots on the ends! I agree, that if you have coily hair then you're more likely to have them. I did a search on this on nappturality and they said that it is just a natural thing that happens.
They gave some really good advice - e.g. not sleeping with your hair loose. So if you sleep with a satin scarf, make sure to braid before you put it on.
The knots have gone now, and I think this is because I also make sure that the ends get a lot of moisture. I cowash twice a week and wash once a week and detangle gently each time. I also use a mosituriser (shea butter leave in, or mane n tail leave in or paltas etc) and then I concentrate castor oil on them after. That stuff is thick and PREVENTS it from even THINKING of knotting up again.

The easiest way to avoid them is to be very careful when taking your plaits/braids/twists/etc. Since they mostly happen on or near the ends, that's where you concentrate your time, but when you put in your plaits/braids/etc...slow down when you get to your ends and make sure you get a very "neat" ending. When you end up messy, as I sometimes do, that's when the knots appear. IOW, take much more time w/ the ends either braiding or unbraiding.
