Knots And Wng

Yes this is exactly why a lot of naturals don't do wash n gos. I love them but now that my hair is getting longer my hair tangles a lot and it's terrible to detangle. My hair is very fine and this happens easily. Don't get me started on the ssk's. I've ditched them for now and I've been using heat.

I transitioned and went natural while using a comb maybe twice a month. I credit the Max Hydration Method ('MHM', there's a long thread about it), but really, the only MHM-thing I still do is a clay rinse for the final step. That might help you. A lot of people think the MHM is just about curl definition, but I have curl definition already. I was looking for a way to keep my hair moist and detangled and it looks like clay is it.

If you're interested, my clay recipe is... not exactly a recipe, per se :look:, but here it is:

Maybe a cup of clay
A few tblsp of Slippery Elm Bark powder (for slip... obviously :look:)
1-2 tblsp glycerin

And then AVJ til the consistency of thick cake batter. Add water until you reach your desired consistency.

I use some and put the rest in the fridge. Every time I use it, I add a little warm water to loosen it up. A batch of this can last me a week, washing about 2 or 3 times/ wk (but, to be fair, my hair is kinda short, ymmv). I've also added Irish Sap Moss and Marshmallow Root at times (former is kinda fishy smelling).

HTH!

Cosigning on the clay washes. I ran out of my various clay stash and had to wait like 3 weeks for my butters n bars order to arrive. I washed with sulfate free shampoos in the meantime.
I only wear wash n go's and I had so much tangles it was ridiculous. At least now I know for sure, clay washes will forever be part of my regimen.

I had given up on wngs as well for the same reason. But recently I've been doing them with ecostyler gel and because the gel is heavy enough to cut back on a lot of shrinkage, I haven't had a lot of problems. When I wash/finger detangle, I also make sure to pull downward while detangling to prevent the hair from springing back up and getting detangled.

There's a YT tutorial showing how to detangle your old wash n go. I went 2 weeks in between my wash in go with no issues other than SSKs that were their prior to detangling.

But I make sure o grab mediums sections and glob conditioner on the ends and pull on my ends to prevent my shedded hair from matting at the ends. I loosen my ends to prevent all that shed hair from getting trapped on my ends. I'll post the video if I can find it.

I do wash and goes via MHM- water rinse, clay rinse, oil rinse and really diluted Kinky Curly Curling Custard.

My hair is tightly coiled and doesn't really tangle too much thanks to the clay wash and my technique. But I do get single strand knots on my ends. When I feel them, I trim them off.

The custard keeps my hair elongated and clumped so shed hairs are much easier to remove. I finger detangle almost exclusively, unless I'm dabbling with some kind of set (rarely).

The seems so messy. Are the bars better than the powder?
What seems messy? If you mean the clay, then it's not messy at all for me. I add ingredients to a condiment bottle and shake vigorously to completely blend. If you're not a DIYer you can buy pre-made mud wash from Teressentials.

Clays are definitely helpful with wash and gos. I find them to slightly elongate my hair which reduced tangles. Also for parts of my hair that don't curl up as easily as the rest, clay helps them clump longer.

Personally, I like to use deep conditioners with clays in it so I don't have to worry about mixing it on my own. Shea Moisture African Black Soap Purification Masque (which you pretty much have to buy online now) has Kaolin clay, which is pretty good. I prefer Rhassoul Clay myself, and there are a few small online vendors that have the masks with that clay like KJ Naturals and Jakeala . If you want Bentonite clay then Teressentials is a good bet.

Besides clay, the other thing I do to reduce tangles is to cleanse my hair every 3-4 days to keep the knots to a minimum.

I never used clay out of pure laziness, but I get similar results from the Anthony Dickey WNG (Heres a thread: https://longhaircareforum.com/threads/anthony-dickey-method.729695/) I have type four hair so this really helps keep my hair detangled and elongated without all the hard work or the knots. The best part is that not including prepoo time, the process takes 20 minutes in the shower. And once you're out the shower, you're done. At night, I keep my hair from tangling by separating it into four *lightly* banded pigtails with satin headbands. In the morning I just quickly fluff with wet hands. When my hair is loose, I wash every 3-4 days just because I have an oily scalp, but with proper nightly care, I could probably stretch out one wash n go to 6 days because they look better with age.

I like this method because I really can't be bothered with shingling my hair or trying to manually define a curl. The laziness is real. I like that this method "freezes" my natural curl pattern after it was enhanced with moisturizing products.

I like this method. The only problem is I can't find a good product to give me nice results in the shower. The only thing that works is Kinky Curly Knot Today Curling Custard which takes days to dry even after I diffuse. What do you use as your styler?

I alternate between Studio 25 Gel (walgreens brand) and homemade flax seed gel. I like the results, but they're both a bit of a pain to find/make so I'm about to start looking around for alternatives.

Applying gel in sections starting at the roots so the hairs shed I'm a uniform manner has been key for me...
My aversion to working in sections is from the ease of caring for a closely barbered style for years. My hair is really thick. Working in sections will take a long time and I'm not looking forward to it.

But UGH...she is so describing my hair. What is her channel name?

Questforperfectcurl. Her hair is very thick and long now. She has a recent video showing how she applies gel in larger sections.

where do you purchase the ingredients

clay
Slippery Elm Bark powder
1-2 tblsp glycerin

I prevent maximum shrinkage by applying whatever products in using at the time, and then I place my hair in 4 large twists while it dries. This has worked wonders for reducing tangles. Although it seems like a large twist out, it isn't, the integrity of my curls are maintained since I don't comb through it before twisting. I don't need to let it dry completely before I take the twists out.

Thx.

OMG I'm watching her gel comparison. I was ok until she unraveled a braid or twist. o_O She has waaaay too much hair!

As my hair has gotten longer I refuse to do wngs. I don't want the ssk. No matter what method I use I get them most often with wngs

I wear wash n goes 99.99% of the time and I don't have issues with tangles or ssk's. I think what helps me is definitely working in sections. I do four big sections that I break down further. You also need to use lots of water and moisturizing products. I love running gels with a lot of slip. My favorites are as I am curling jelly and Camille rose naturals curl maker. I style it once a week and wet and shake every morning.

I was never able to do a WnG as a natural. It was frustrating because I really liked the look but not the excessive tangles.

I love wash and goes. I don't really get tangles, but I do feel the occasional SSK on the end of a strand. I've never noticed them before (pre HHJ and LHCF), but then I've never worn my hair regularly in an unstretched state, and loose before. If I'm at home, I cut them but maybe I shouldn't be so bothered(?):ohwell:.

I don't get tangling and I do something similar to this method. I use a heavy conditioner and gel on dripping wet hair. I do my hair in 5 sections and use the praying hands method. I diffuse the bottom part with cool air as I don't want product on my back or clothes. Styling takes me about 10 mins and another 10 to diffuse. If I am not going anywhere for a while, I don't even bother diffusing and just lounge around the house topless till the lower part dries.

At night, I put my hair in one ponytail using ribbon ties. I also use the ribbon ties in 2 places down the ponytail to keep my hair stretched. Most times I co cleanse mid week, but every now and then I don't and still no tangling.

I use Aussie 3 Min Miracle (with cones) or Tresemme Perfectly Undone (no cones) or my dupe of either as my leave-in; and Wet Line Xtreme Gel or Super Wet Gel, sometimes combined with Lily of the Desert Aloe Gelly for slip as my gel.

I love Hair Rules Videos! In this video, it's the Hair Rules products (Shampoo and Quench Conditioner) that stretches her curls and keep them from tangling. Find yourself a good detangling shampoo and conditioner and you'll fight half your battles. I personally use the Hair Rules Shampoo and the attached conditioner for pre-pooing (on dry hair) and for my wash off conditioner. It detangles very well and has great ingredients for those of you who are chemical sensitive.

Most importantly, make sure your ends are trimmed every 3 months. The best detangling starts with healthy ends.

Tis all.
