This sounds rather interesting to me, especially the shea butter on ends then going under the dryer.

I was reading this Dominican woman's journal re: long healthy hair she suggested:

To keep ends from drying out and splitting, apply shea butter to the ends only. Apply deep conditioner to the rest of your hair and go under the dryer for 10 minutes on medium heat. Cholesterol conditioner can be substituted for the shea butter.

One of the oldest tricks in the book for healthy hair is Avocado. Blend a whole ripe avocado, teaspoon of olive oil and 1/2 cup of water. Put on hair and leave on for 1 hour. DO NOT go under the dryer.

I know a girl with hair down to her calves. She says she puts 2 raw eggs with a little water in her hair once a week as a conditioner. Rinse out with cool water.

To enhance your color or for a pick-me-up between colorings add these ingredients for your hair type:
Dark Hair - brew expresso or any strong coffee. Spray or comb into dry hair. Leave on for half an hour and rinse.

This something that I always try to do when I have shea butter around. It really makes a difference (to me) when done consistently.

Thanks for the tips!

This information is so helpful. Thank you for posting this FashionistaNY. Here are some other Dominocan Secrets that have been on the hush-hush for many years.! :)

Dominican Women’s Secrets to beautiful Hair

I have relaxed hair, how do I take care of my hair between visits to my stylist ?
Follow these 10 tips on relaxed hair maintenance:

1) Wash your hair at least twice a week

2) When you do, you should always use a "leave-in" conditioner for at least five minutes...sometimes may put it on in the shower, while doing other things.

3) NEVER, EVER, BLOW-DRY your HAIR WHILE IT'S DRIPPING WET or WHEN YOU GET OUT
OF THE SHOWER!!!!!---BIG NO NO!!!!!---INSTEAD SET YOUR HAIR IN PLASTIC, ROLLERS USING BOBBY PINS TO SECURE THEM OR OTHER ALTERNATIVES. DEPENDING ON YOUR HAIR LENGTH THEN SIT UNDER A HAIR-DRYER FOR 40 TO 50 MINUTES.---although this sounds like a tedious process, the outcome is FANTASTIC!! Many people THINK WILL your hair is naturally straight, because slow drying hair gives it a more "free flowing" feel. After your hair is dry, then use a blow-dryer to eliminate the "form" of the rollers in the hair. Or that night, you might wrap the hair around your head.

4) Touch-ups of relaxer should be every TWO-TO-THREE months FAITHFULLY...EVEN MARK IT ON your CALENDAR!!!!

5) NEVER, EVER, EVER ,EVER, APPLY ANY RELAXER CREAM TO THE ENDS OF YOUR HAIR!!!!!---YOU WILL FRY YOUR HAIR TO A CRISP!!!--ONLY DO YOUR ROOTS.

6) Apply a deep penetrating conditioner and sit under a hair dryer or heat cap for 15 minutes at least once a month.---Some of women do it every time they wash their hair.

7) If you must color your hair..ONLY USE SEMI-PERMANENT HAIR COLOR!!!! ALL PERMANENT HAIR COLOR CONTAIN SOME LEVEL OF PEROXIDE THAT CAN DAMAGE YOUR HAIR!!!---Besides, it looks sooooo tacky when your hair starts to grow out.

8) On a daily basis, you should use light amounts of some kind of "hair oil"or grease to keep you hair shiny and protect it from the sun, air pollution, and heat styling.

9) KEEP THE USE OF CURLING IRONS TO A BARE MINIMUM.-----If you want some curls in your hair, set it in sponge rollers the night before, or use a small round brush and a blow-dryer.---CURLING IRONS SLOWLY DAMAGE YOUR HAIR BY WEAKENING
YOUR ENDS.

10) Although you may not have split ends, you should cut a 1/2 inch to an inch of your hair EVERY TIME YOU RELAX YOUR HAIR.-----not only does cutting your ends give your hair new life, your hair will be better able to hold curls and styles...and it'll look healthier.

Women in the Dominican Republic have been following this hair care regime for MANY MANY YEARS---the above ten steps have almost turned into a "hidden" religion!!!!!! BUT I GUARANTEE THAT IF ANYONE FOLLOWS THE ABOVE TEN STEPS, YOU WILL HAVE HEALTHY, FREE FLOWING, BEAUTIFUL HAIR---ALWAYS!!!!!!-------I hope the above information will help every woman in this situation, believe me I've been there and back and I know.

I have a question, do they mean a cholesterol conditioner like LeKair or is it speaking of another brand? Could someone please elaborate.:)

And also about the avocado with oilive oil do you put that mixture on wet or dry hair?

I had some avacado left over so I mashed it up and put it on my hair. With the avacado on it felt like butter it was slippery. Can't really attest to the after effect because I put so much other stuff that it weakened my results I would definately try again.

I think all Cholesterol Cons are the same, maybe with a few different ingredients, but they have the same basic concept. I ues the regular Quene Helene's Cholesterol Treatment. I just bought the QHCT with Gensing to see how that will work. I have noticed the elaticity brought back to me hair. Whenever a long strand sheds or breaks (rough treatment) I tug on it to see how the texture & strength is. They went from snapping in my hands to bouncing like rubber bands!!

I mix the Avocado & Olive oils with most of the products that I use or by themselves. I put it on wet or dry hair. I think it would end up being your preference. :)

Some more great tips, but I think I'll skip #10:)
I'm trying to see if Cathy Howse was right...

Sheabutter works wonders on my ends, especially if it's unrefinded sheabutter!

i think I might try using the shea butter for deep conditioning. I'm just afraid that it will cause product build-up in my hair and weigh it down. :perplexed

Where are people getting the sheabutter from? I dont want to spend too much money on hair products anymore. God bless you all.

I see that you are located in NY so you could get the shea butter from the africanstores or the african men and women that have their little stalls along the streets. You could also find it at www.Nasabb.com

Hey sweetpea

With all due respect, I disagree with #7 on that list. All permanent colors DO NOT contain peroxide. I've used Bigen Permanent Powder Hair Color for about 3 years and all you do is add water. I never had any damage from it, because its chemical free...kinda like a henna-type hair color. I don't think I'll be doing #10. I was a constant trimmer for upwards of two years (about a 1/2" every 8 weeks), and although my hair always continued to grow back, it stayed at the same length. If you take care of the ends, its not necessary to trim that frequently, especially if length is what you're trying to attain.

I always see the guys selling the sheabutter or some type of thick thing in a jar on 125th but I am leery of buying anything other than books off the street. I am always wondering in the back of my head is this really sheabutter?????? :scratchch God bless you all.

Oh Lord!! Now you have got my mind racing.:scratchch :scratchch :lachen:I think that it is the real thing. I dunno:look: .

I think it is the real thing. There are so many Africans in Harlem that that would be the one place I think would be most likely to have the real thing. HTH.

I have some SHea Butter that Ibought from Bath and Body Works do you think this will work just as well it is supposed to be 100% Shea Butter???

Great tips, although, like the others said, I'l skip number 10. I think half an inch is too much to trim after each relaxer. If your hair grows on the slower end of the spectrum - say 1/4" per month - and you relax your hair every two months, you're losing all your progress. This, of course, is assuming that you take good care of your ends and they don't need that much of a trim.

Has anyone tried the shea butter on your ends I just did it tonight and I am waiting my hair to dry so I can do my HOMEMADE Domincan Blowout!
