Keratin hair treatments may cause major breakage

I got a keratin treatment back in May. My hair looked gorgeous and healthy for a few weeks. Then, I got major breakage. My hair snapped off to 2 inches in a few sections.

I found an old hairdresser who is now back in business. And as soon as she saw my hair, she knew it was because of the keratin treatment. She said that keratin treatments are not for relaxed hair and that's the first thing they teach you in Salerm Keratin training.

She said to prepare myself mentally for breakage, but that she would give me treatments. She said that instead of cutting all my hair off, she was going to give me a sew-in weave in the back of my hair where the breakage is. It blends nicely because the front is still long and has little breakage. Still, I hate having tracks on my head!

It is a wonder that the keratin hair treatments advise that it is fine to apply on previously relaxed and chemically treated hair. :nono:

I'm amazed too. I am really investigating this. I called the Salerm company and they told me to call back in about an hour to ask the specialist. I wonder what he will say. I also just called another Dominican salon to ask about the keratin treatment. When I asked if it can be done on relaxed hair, she paused and then said "Yes, but I usually recommend to wait 3 to 4 months after a relaxer before putting it in." Hmmm ... :scratchch This sounds fishy to me.
 
Same thing happened to me and I am natural. I made a thread about it showing the pictures. And the breakage is getting worse every day, I cut the back and it's growing bAck
 
Do you happen to know the name of the Keratin treatment that you used. Is a Keratin treatment and BKT the same thing?

The shop advertised Salerm Keratin Treatment, but she actually used a different brand (which violates Trademark law). I can't remember the name off of the top of my head. It will come to me and I will post it when it does.

Yes, a brazilian keratin treatment and BKT are the same. I just shortened it to keratin.

Thanks, Kinchen! This thread should be a sticky. Before, BKT was getting rave reviews.
 
I received a keratin treatment back in December and the stylist told me it wasnt for relaxed hair......I hope the sew in helps you maintain your length.
 
I'm glad you have a stylist that cares about your hair to get it back on track. I think its a good idea to give your hair a break. Keep up posted.
 
It should be common sense to avoid a treatment that requires 7-10 passes of heat at 450 degrees on relaxed hair. Black folks listen to pastors and hairdressers like they are God...people need to read and research EVERYTHING For THEMSELVES.

I woukd think a relaxer is the ultimate smoother. What woukd possess someone to do both without research!!!!????

Dove56 What kind of research are you talking about? At the time, it said all over the internet that it was safe for relaxed hair. All the keratin companies said that it was safe for relaxed hair. And the LHCF said that it was safe for relaxed hair. In fact, I just got off the phone with the specialist from Salerm and he said that it was safe for relaxed hair because "it is only a treatment."

Wow! Thats too bad! I hope your hair bounces back and thrives like never before. That being said....as a natural my hair did beautifully with the BKT. Did u use heat everyday or week? The only reason i didn't get it again is because we want to start a family soon. But my hair loved it.....Hmmmm.

No, I don't use direct heat. I rollerset my hair weekly.
 
Dang, I'm sorry that happened. I've had BKT twice on relaxed hair and had no issues. There is so much involved in the process (manipulation, chemicals, excessive heat) that it could have been a number of things to trigger breakage.
 
Why did you get the treatment on relaxed hair when you're hair is already straight? Does the keratin make it smoother? Honest question, ladies

It makes it a lot smoother, detangles much easier and faster, "heavy" with swang, able to use less product, faster styling due to easier detangling. It gave me many benefits. It's not just all about having straight hair.
 
I have always wondered about the pros and cons of using a keratin treatment on relaxed hair. I have used a keratin treatment on natural hair about 10 times with no issues.

I totally agree with you!!!!! Of course your hair will be stright and damaged with that much heat on your hair. The hair being straight probably doesn't even come from the application of keratin but the heat damage from flat ironing that much can do that!!!
