Has anyone else had a problem getting the Kinky Curly custard out their hair? After about five days I was ready to wash it out and I thought cowashing would do the trick, but no luck. So I used a clarifying shampoo and I still have clumps of it in my hair. I pretty much followed the instructions so I'm not sure what the problem is. Any advice?

I have had the problem of getting various products stuck in my hair. Anything with wax, jojoba, and a disastrous homemade mix with avocado, aloe juice, honey, and a bunch of oils. Clarifying and acv didn't take them out.

Oil rinsing with hot water worked for the waxes and jojoba (it took several times over a few weeks for the waxes). Warm water softens the wax, oil helps it slide out. I moved my hands down my hair while doing this to move the stuff out.

Cowashing with the following method worked for the avocado mix:

1. Wash hair with normal shampoo.
2. Apply a huge amt of cowash (VO5 moisture milk- use something that rinses clean, this was perfect) and rinse a bit in very cold water, just long enough to "freeze" the stuff to the cowash. Then rinse thoroughly in very warm water (as hot as my scalp would allow). Repeat step 2 until it is out.

I'm not sure what will work for KCCC, but I def recommend patience and not using too harsh of methods. Before I figured out what worked, I did a lot of clarifying & ACV, which caused it's own setbacks...

Also, check the ingredients and see what you think might have caused this and avoid it in the future! If I had to guess, it might be the agave nectar combined w/ aloe. I had the same issue with honey and aloe and the other stuff- I wonder if those things combine to make something hard/sticky? Just a guess. I now know I will NEVER try KCCC, because my hair is too prone to getting things stuck in it!

Best of luck, and I hope this helps!

Conditioners are not likely to wash out styling gel. If you've been using generous amounts of gel then you need to shampoo your hair - you can use any shampoo for this as long as it's clear rather than creamy. Wash rinse, repeat and that should do the trick.

Co washing isn't a wash IMO....it's a conditioning treatment. In order to truly clean your hair, you need to use a shampoo.

I would normally agree that shampoo/clarifying actually deep cleans, as opposed to cowash/oils. I would suggest another clarifying shampoo, esp if you used a "natural" clarifying shampoo (purchased or homemade)- these didn't do squat for me. I've had good experiences with Ion clarifying shampoo.

I think there are certain people who have a problem w/ products getting stuck in their hair that can't be removed with clarifying or shampoos. The wax created a hard buildup, like dried superglue. It "hid" in my hair until I clarified, then I could feel it. If you used a product containing wax since the last time you clarified, and it feels like hard patches of dried superglue it might actually be wax, not KCCC. For me, the only thing that got that out was oil rinsing and time. I once clarified maybe 8ish times in a row (!) and it was still in there. EVCO is great, or EVOO if you prefer that. It sucks because the only way you can tell if it is truly gone is by clarifying b/c any conditioners on top soften it and hide it.

Neutrogena makes a shampoo called Anti residue shampoo, that can be found at most local drugstores. It's a clear clarifying shampoo made specifically to rid the hair of residue and product build-up. It can be used weekly without irritating the hair, or scalp, and it's made to be used in between your regular shampoos, or followed up with your favorite moisturizing poo. I found out about this Neutrogena shampoo @Moptopmaven.blogspot.com. I've used it twice over the past 3 weeks, and I liked the results. It didn't seem to strip my hair, and I used it to remove product buildup and oil, not gel. You might want to give it a try.

Thanks ladies for the advice! I thought since it was made of all natural ingredients that I could get away with just co-washing. I really like the product so I don't want to give up on it. I probably should just try a better shampoo.

I use KCCC all the time and never had any problem getting it out. I don't use a large amount of it though, did you use a lot? What did you use under it?

use a cleansing conditioner like wen or hairone...

kccc leaves a residue on my hair as well...and i dont use alot at all...i can only use kccc on my bare hair with no other product...

I made sure to use the Knot Today with it just so there wouldn't be any problems. I don't think that I used too much.

I love my kinky curly and not today. When I use any gel like product, I shampoo. I love the neutrogena! The residue poo that one of the ladies was speaking of earlier:

this one I haven't ever used before. But when I have my hair out with kccc and kt, when I wash, I finger detangle with water and olive oil and section. I then wash with filtered water to dilute: . I make sure to wash well, starting with RINSING well with water, then I shampoo. I don't use a lot of kccc, but I will put that over my leave-in and shea butter, b/c usually I do this at the end of a week right before washing. I might have to shampoo 2x, cause I will see those "white balls" of product. I just wash again, adding a little more oil then diluted shampoo ( 1/4 cp shampoo to 10-12 oz water ) and I am good to go.

Also, from the faq's of kinky curly site: http://kinky-curly.com/tips.php

shampoo your hair to remove the buildup.
I USED YOUR COME CLEAN SHAMPOO AND I STILL HAVE WHITE STUFF IN MY HAIR?
Come Clean shampoo will remove mild to moderate buildup. If you have used a heavy duty silicone product or a product with an ingredient like beeswax or lanolin we suggest you mix a pinch of baking soda with the Come Clean shampoo in the palm of your hand and use this to wash your hair. This will clean your hair without using a harsh clarifying shampoo. ( imho, any clear/clarifying shampoo diluted so it doesn't dry out your tresses works just fine )

CAN I DO A CONDITIONER WASH?
A conditioner wash when first using our products may not be enough to remove styling product buildup. We recommend the Come Clean Shampoo instead.

( again any clear/clarifying shampoo diluted so it doesn't dry out your tresses works just fine )

CAN I USE MY OLD FAITHFUL TRIED AND TRUE SHAMPOO / CONDITIONER WITH THE CURLING CUSTARD?
..... An ingredient in your "tried and true" shampoo or "old faithful" conditioner may not mix well with the Curling Custard and it can cause you to get less than stellar results.
