Since joining this board, I am very grateful for the great info I have gotten over the years. At first my goal was to grow my hair long and then go back to relaxers. Then, I said I was going to stay natural for life. Now, I'm not sure what I want to do. I get frustrated when it comes to the amount of time it takes me to style my hair. My hair is sooooo thick, like Rudy Huxtable thick. I also have like three different textures. But, I don't want to give up the health and beauty of my hair for style.

I also look at all the relaxed ladies with beautiful, healthy, long hair and sometimes wish for my relaxed hair again. I REALLY miss getting my hair done at the salon every two weeks. I stayed rocking a new do!! I miss being able to detangle my hair in 10 minutes.

BUT, when I first got a relaxer, I was 11 1/2, and my cousin did it. She used a no lye SUPER strength! (which looking back on, i know was tooo strong!!) Then I went to different salons, had different people doing it, different types of relaxers, lye and no lye, etc

Now I wonder, with all the knowledge I have now about taking care of my hair, would my hair do good with relaxing again? Would it still be healthy? I would rather texturize, because I don't want to lose my kinky hair, I just want some CURL DEFINITION and easier to manage hair!!!!! Is that too much to ask for????!!!! I also know that I am NOT doing a BC again!! Whatever I do, I'm going to have to keep it.

If you went natural looking for curl definition then maybe that wasnt the right choice  Everybody doesnt get curls or waves, I started transitioing thinkign I was gonna have a big Angela Davis fro and when it started growign out I realized that was not gonna happen without spritz and alot of combing . A texturizer will give you a looser curl than what you have now. Think long and hard about what you want to do. You have alot of natural hair and once you texturize or relax it thats it. On the other hand I dont think hair should be a struggle. If your natural hair is causing you that many problems and you just cant deal with it then do whats best for your hair. Life is too short to spend it fighting your hair. Rudy Huxtable looks nice with a relaxer.... :D

hey VinDieselswifey,
Sorry to hear that your new hair is stressing you.
Have you considered getting a press? You can still go the hairdresser and get your hair blown out etc if you want to alternate between the looks.

I'm not really sure about the curls, but if you want to spend the extra time... when I had rudy huxtable hair, my mom would put small bantus in my hair while wet with leave in and oils etc, let them dry and pull them out.
I was left with nice defined and tight curls. You can pull them out to give the desired effect.
My only warning would be to be sure to moisturize everyday and try to keep the style fresh by re-doing the bantus every so often to avoid getting knots and splits.

Go for the relaxer girl! I was natural for two years and have the same Rudy Huxtable hair you have. The larger my fro got, the less I knew what to do with it. I am not gifted with hairstyling like some of the ladies on this board.

If you want curl definition, I think the best to do would be to leave the relaxer on for a less amount of time. I personally, do not prefer bone straight hair. I like volume and curls.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.
