Hey ya'll,
I'm new to Long Hair Care Form, and excited for some reason, lol! Well a little history about me and my hair care issue, yes issue. I have never had long beautiful hair, but I have always wanted long beautiful hair. However, the last year has been the worst year for my hair and I. When I was pregnant I thought it would be a great idea to wear braids. So I wear braids for about 8 months. I thought braids would be good because when I was younger I thought braids help my hair with growing, ok. After I had my son my hair had grown (not as much as I would have like, but who's being picky). But me being me I decided to cut it all off, and wear a short cut for while...Oh I left out the part where my honey and I moved to Omaha, NE(cold and dry winters) from Jacksonville, FL (warm and no winter, lol). Now, I can't get me hair to stay moisturized for anything. I have spent too much money on my hairs problem. Well December came and my frustration increased so I cut off ALL my hair. It is growing back slowly, but surely. Now it is so dry it hurts to combs it or touch it sometime and I have not had the proper training to handle short, dry, natural nappy hair in Omaha, NE!! Please help me ... I will post pics when I take my braids out so ya'll can see. Oh yeah I had to go back to braids, but I don't like how the braids break off my edges and my hair in normally thin and the braids make it thinner but it it longer. Does anyone have any advice?

Hello and welcome, I can totally relate to the cold dry winters. What are you using in terms of moisturizer for your hair? Have you tried cowashing?

I agree with cowashing. Also try conditioning on dry hair under some heat. And look for some moisturizing leave-ins and moisturizers.

Welcome to LHCF!!!! In the winter time it is essential that we increase our moisture by spritzing our hair with water and/or conditioner daily, this is also important when wearing braids or any protective style (PS) for that matter. Extensions especially can be very drying and with our hair being tucked away whether with hair enhancements or not its important to still moisturize or else we will end up with dry, brittle and/or breaking hair. Deep conditioning treatments with heat are also helpful. What I personally find to be extra helpful during the winter months for my natural hair is baggying. This is where I coat my hair with conditioner, a leave-in, or any type of moisturizer and then seal my hair with an oil like extra virgin olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil, or shea butter and cover with a shower cap. I leave this on overnight, during the day, or whenever I have free time and just lounging around the house. HTH
