Just got off the phone with CURVE, and I'm pissed! They charge you for everything!

hair bored
Okay, I had to start a whole new thread for this! Please let me know if you think I'm overreacting! I called CURVE to see about an appointment for color, which they do have available when I'll be in NY. Anyways, I told the lady on the phone that I want highlights, and possibly my based lifted, but I wanted to discuss that with the stylist. No problem there. She told me I could expect the color to start at $300 and go up to about $400-$450 depending on what I have done. I was expecting that, so no surpirse there either. Then she had the nerve to tell me that there would be an additional $150 or more charge for my styling! WTF? I was like, what do you mean? She said, well, if you get shingling, a twist out, coil out, spiral set, or anything like that, it will be extra. I told that I didn't want my hair shingled or set, or anything like that. I explained to her that all I usually do is add my styling products, in my case a little mousse or gel, shake my hair, and let it air dry. She was like, I don't think they'll let you walk out with color only, and no style. I told her I don't mind them finishing my hair, I obviously don't expect to walk out with sopping wet, freshly colored hair. I really wasn't trying to be difficult, but I didn't think I needed an actual styling service. I asked her if they could just add some curly pudding and allow my hair to air dry. She was like sure, that still falls under finger styling, and it will be at least an extra $150, but you can discuss that with Titi or Miko...

Am I wrong to be mad? I want to go to their salon, but d*mn! Why do they feel a need to heap on all their services! I've never heard anyone here mention that they do this. They can run their salon any way they choose, but I won't be going if they insist on charging for something that should go with a service. I mean what's next, a shampoo charge, a conditioner charge, and electricity charge and a water charge??? Geez...

wow! That would certainly turn me off. If I were you, I would pay the fee for a counseltation. Then when I get in there after they check out my hair, I would tell them what I want, and see what they will charge. This way, if you decided against it, all you lost was the deposit, and you won't be pissed that you left out of there $500-$700 lighter! Dag nab! I wouldn't even go to them for a color that costs that much. I would rather just go to AVEDA.

Yep, they charge for EVERYTHING :-( You aren't overreacting. That's why the decision to go is "if money is not an option" lol. They do a great job with what they do, but I limit my services with them to cutting which keeps me just under $300 a visit.

Unfortunately, that's how it usually goes at higher-end/priced salons. The salon I go to is the same way and pisses the hell outta me. But I love their service (trims, cuts). So when I need one, that is the only place/stylist I'll go to. That's why I always make sure I ask for the price of the service, then ask for the prices of shampoo, conditioner, etc. B/c that bill will make you go  when you see it. Then they have the nerve to add tax on top of it.

The next time I go, I'm thinking of just going with my hair already washed, conditioned, AND straightened and ask only for a trim. :ohwell:

I must be doing something wrong, cause I can't imagine in my WILDEST dreams spending $5-700 dollars on a salon visit.

$300 - $700 for hair color and styling?

If there are people who would pay that kind of money to get their hair done, then...I'm in the wrong business!!!;)

I'm sayin'! I couldn't spend over $100 for everything.

Me either. Hell, I was shocked when I got a perm and style at JC Penney and my bill was $70!!

Ayana Have you thought about going to Aveda or a natural color specialist since it seems you really want color? Most people I hear going to Curve go for "XYZ + the style," not just "XYZ."

I would pay a $150-250 for a good cut and style, but not necessarily $500 for a color and style, especially since I know some good colorists out here, and because of Curve's niffty PDFs on line, I can experiement with the styles myself.

Like I said in another thread, I'm sorry that salon is just another company in the business of exploiting black people!!! Sure it's not an AA only salon, but I think it's safe to say alot of black people have curly hair! They're working under the slogan: Brooklyn's first salon for curls kinks and waves, but I don't like the way their before and afters seem to have alot of "Client came in for a cut, we advised a silkening"!!!!! Err hello?!?!?!? She doesn't want ur d*mn chemicals!!! .... lol sorry I thought the place looked great but as far as I'm concerned no matter how they market themselves and no matter who they market themselves too they're just like the rest; money-hungry and all out for themelves! Once that "silkener" is up in them women's hair, their a$$ belongs to curve, so they wanna start working 2 jobs for the upkeep! I'm sure some of those women are still as naive as to believe it's not a relaxer in disguise! AND everyone's hair looks the same neway - there's like 3 styles that they try to add character to because the lengths and colours, but essentially everyones walking out with the same style.
Ayanapooh u have every right to be p*ssed off they just want u to stroll up in there believing they might not charge you only to inform you they don't do shake and gos then tack another $150 on ur bill knowing you wont kick up a stink. Even if I did have $500 lying around I sure as hell wouldnt be giving it to them and I dont think you should either!

The most I have paid was $85 and I had a fit.:lachen: It was originally $65 but she added some "extras"....which I thought were free........:perplexed

Anyway, on that one show Blow out, Jonathan charges $500 and up just for a hair cut!!!!!! What??? I will pay that if i don't need to style my hair for the rest of the year.

I am sorry that is ridiculous! I have seen their web page and while the some of the styles are nice, I would never pay those outrageous prices. U may not even like the way your hair looks afterwards and that would be pretty hard to swallow at those prices!

Dang dimpalz, tell us how you really feel! :lachen: LOL, I hear you girl, and I've decided not to go to CURVE when I'm in NY after all. I just don't like the way they tack on so much stuff that you don't need. At this point, it's a matter of principle, cuz I ain't paying NOBODY $150 or better to finger style my hair! And you know, it's not just about the money, b/c I could afford to spend $500 on my hair, but I guess the real question is, do I want to? Answer: Hell to the naw! I would much rather go someplace that specializes in color and spend $200-$300. I think I'm gonna call the Curly Girl salon like enchantment suggested. :yep:

****DEAD*************:lachen:

And while I don't knock Curve's hustle, I wouldn't spend the money either.

Then they are going to tell you that it is against health policy, and they have to wash your hair.

Don't forget your scissors

Wow ladies. Just got off the phone with Devachan, and they have an appointment when I'll be in town. Their color starts at $120, and the lady said it will go up to $300 at the VERY most, and that's if he (Antonio, the colorist) does something extensive, like lift my base color. They apply ribbons of color right on your curls in its natural state, she called it hair painting. I really like the sound of this salon. I mean, I wanted to support my people, but CURVE sounds like highway robbery! :driver: I'll be going to Devachan for sure! :yep:

For 5-700 dollars a month they had better let me move in for a month! That's just excessive! NO ONE should be charging that much for haircare! That's what's wrong with the world today. No parity between actual value and price. JMHO.

Girl....that is insane! I'm all for paying top dollar to go to a high end salon, but they are just price gouging. An EXTRA buck fifty just for styling??? Obviously I'm in the wrong profession...I'd be pissy too, I don't think you are overreacting at all!

Re: Just got off the phone with CURVE, and I'm pissed! They charge you for everything

Are they franchising? ;)

I think you better find a dominican when u come to N Y in harlem, they can put their special stuff in your hair and let it airdry for under $30 bucks

Neither can I. I love my hair and would do almost anything for it but spending that type of money on it is out of the question. Curve is crazy!
