June 2020: Hits & Misses

Kitchen Mixtress
Hello Ladies!

I wanna know what’s working & what’s a skip for this month!

I’m doing an extra push for any extra scrap of self care I luxuriate on myself, so please don’t skimp on the “continued hits” either!

I’ll go first!

Continued Hit: Black Rice Water! Definitely an improvement on the original for me.

Hit: baggying my leave-in for 5-15 minutes before beginning my styling process as demonstrated by YouTuber FayeInTheCity! What a game changer I think this will be!!

Miss?: Eden Bodyworks Coconut Curl Defining Creme. I feel like I get inconsistent results with this product but can’t tell what I’m doing wrong

HUGE HIT
Joico Moisture Recovery Conditioner for detangling and cowashing. The slip! My curly roots just went straight buttery with this. Detangled like a breeze!

HIT
Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm - consistently leaves my hair feeling soft and moisturised at the end of wash day.

Miss: Aloe vera juice, it is a great detangler but very drying to my natural hair.

Miss: Jane Carter leave in condtioner spray: the third indergrident is aloe vera juice

Hit: putting a plastic cap for 15 minutes after applying leave in conditioner, it really allows it to soak in my hair, then I seal with a small amount of hair grease. The moisture has been lasting longer and detangling on wash day has been easier.

Hit :
- As I am coconut cowash as a prepoo / Detangle
- Keracare curlessence moisturizing shampoo (cheap and actually is both moisturizing and cleansing, first shampoo I ever used that I could Detangle with)
- the doux mousse def texture foam. Ugh, so good, gave me a great twist out

Maybe a hit but I don't know yet:

The Doux One Love Co-Wash: In general, I'm not a fan of co-washes because I feel like they coat my hair and ultimately dry my hair out. However, I wanted to give this one a go. This particular co-wash markets itself as a "wash day in a jar" and can be used as a pre-poo, cleanser, and deep conditioner. Since I had some time today, I used this product as a cleanser and deep conditioner.

The product itself is pretty thick and smells like bubblegum. As a co-wash, I found that it did a decent job of cleaning my hair and giving a bit of a moisture boost. I also thought that the product rinsed clean and didn't coat my hair. Also, it left my hair shiny.

As a DC, I let the product sit on my hair for 15 minutes with heat. I wasn't particularly wowed by it's performance. It left my hair soft but nowhere near as soft as my beloved SSI deep conditioners do. Ultimately, I feel like I would have to follow up with a separate DC after using this product.

As of today, I would definitely use this product as a mid-week co-wash just to quickly clean my hair and give it a quick shot of moisture.

Nice! How was the slip? How does it compare to the as I am coconut cowash, if you’ve tried that one

Thank You for your review of The Doux Cowash.

I didn't know it was a Multi-use product?

I bought it to use as a Cowash and plan on strictly using it this way. I hope I like it.

I didn't realize it was a multi-use product either until I saw a few reviews on it. Really I think the product shines as a co-wash. I look forward to hearing how it works out for you!

@shasha8685
It really gets good reviews (as a Cowash) - I think most of the other products in the line do as well?

I thought it was kinda' pricey and the packaging looks kinda cheap.:look:

I get the look they were going for tho' (I guess).

Can't wait to try it.

Hit
KeraCare Silky Sheen Spray for blowdrying - left my hair sleek, shiny and yet not weighed down.

Miss
KeraCare Humecto Creme Conditioner - I see so many relaxed ladies loving this on youtube and welp :ohwell:. Issa no for me. One of the few misses in my product stash. Lacks decent slip so wouldn’t use it for cowashing and it didn’t seem to DO anything much in the way of deep conditioning. I will just add it to other conditioners to use it up. Will not repurchase.

Have you tried trying to reap the benefits of aloe vera without leaving it in (like rinsing it out before it can have the drying effect?) or diluting it maybe 1:6 or more?

Mega Hit: The Mane Choice products
I know I missed the hype when it first came out, but I always try to wait until a track record of consistent good results can be maintained before trying something. The pricepoint was also a little turnoff. But I am SO glad I racked up during their 50% off Memorial Day sale.
I tried the Ancient Egyptian: serum (nice so far), gel (AMAZING!) and deep conditioner
The Prickly Pear leave-in:drool:
The Tropical Moringa gel
The Prickly Pear CoWash

I typically have zero brand loyalty. I like a bunch of different things and buy them when they’re on sale or I’m in a pinch. I feel like whenever I really love a product, I always end up getting attached only for it to be discontinued (like Shea Moisture’s original Purification Masque). Or the results are just “Good” and not very different from a dozen other products depending on price/availability.
But Mane Choice can really be bae. I might be in love, y’all. :dinner:
I’ve been trying them every wash day this month and I have rarely experienced this much slip, smoothness, EASE of detangling, moisture, SHINE, and yummy fragrance. Not to mention how much a little goes a long way. And this was with EVERY product I tried (except the serum, which I focused on my ends and had a light lotiony consistency).
Here is my hair in 2 flat twists that is from a week old twist out. When I say my hair is still HIGHLY defined, moisturized, shiny, and smooth even in my flat twists, I know I have to say it because the pic doesn’t do my results justice.

Yeah....I'm not going to use that particular product for Multi-function use. I bought it as a Cowash and will use it that way.

I agree with you about Clay Treatments being Multi-use.

I am leery of most things that says it can be: "A Pre-Poo, A Cowash, A Cleanser, A Protein, A Moisturizer, A Leave-In, A Refresher" all in one product.:nono2:

Working from home every day has allowed me to be freer with styling and focus attention on my hair than I have been in the past few years. Yes, I've always washed and conditioned, but never styled my natural hair. I pulled it back in a bun or up in a top knot and incorporated some Marley hair to get out the door for work everyday or social engagements. Cute and neat, but BORING!

Hits worthy of mention here, are Photogenic Hair Care All-in-One, and PuffCuffs. I am late to the game of using PuffCuffs, I know, but now that I've tried them, I am a fan. I always wanted to wear a puff with my hair, but my hair's delicate texture and density made them puny. With the PuffCuff, I have a good-sized one that I proudly wear in public.
