John Macarthur's Response to Newton

I think that the Newtown tragedy should used as an opportunity to reach out to those hurting...There is a lot of hypocrisy going around, but that is irrelevant. At church, this past Sunday, in my local pastor's Christmas message which seemed to be loved, he explained that those events push people towards God. We can't explain all the whys of some events that occur on Earth and won't know all the answers until we get to Heaven. But one thing we can do with this form of devastation is to use it as an opportunity to bring people into the kingdom. This will put a dent in the kingdom of darkness.

Pastor Gregory Dickow wrote a blog that brings home the point of the Devil trying to silent this generation's voice. I liked it because it was solution-minded and served as an explanation for motivated and solution-oriented believers(posting below). Sad event, but we can use it to be more proactive about those who need help:

Massacre of the Innocents–From Tragedy to Destiny

by Gregory Dickow on December 16, 2012

There are two times in Biblical history that Satan has tried to wipe out an entire generation of CHILDREN. Both times, he sensed the imminent danger to the kingdom of darkness. He sensed a prophetic voice coming that had to be silenced. And he struck with a shock and violence that the world had never known.

First, in Exodus 1:22, Pharaoh, IN FEAR of A DELIVERER being born who would set God’s people free, decrees that all male infants were to be thrown into the Nile River and drowned. Knowing the prophetic impact that Moses would make, Satan sought to destroy him. Though Moses was a prophet and a deliverer, He was a foreshadowing of THE Deliverer, Jesus, who would soon come. In an effort to snuff out Moses, the devil was willing to exterminate an entire generation to silence one prophetic voice.

Again, in Matthew 2:16, Herod orders all the male children (2 and under) in Bethlehem and the surrounding areas, killed. He knew that a new King was born. Inspired by Satan, he was willing to slay an entire generation of children, in an effort to silence the voice of Jesus and abort the purpose of the King of Kings, destined to be the Savior of the world.

Without question, the two most powerful voices of Deliverance that the world would ever hear, were in danger of being silenced by sick & depraved, insecure & evil men. Both Pharaoh and Herod knew that Moses and Jesus were threats to their dominion. But it was Satan who knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, his only chance was to abort these men’s destinies before they ever occurred. However, his plot failed both times.
Well, I believe we are again living in such a generation. We are again living in a time, where Satan is trying to silence a prophetic voice that is coming! Besides Jesus, Himself, this coming generation of children and young people will be the most powerful generation this world has ever known!

No wonder Satan is pulling out all the stops to wipe them out! Consider the horrific school shooting that just took place in Connecticut…that, on top of a number of traumatic and senseless school shootings over the past several years. But this time Satan isn’t just trying to kill a generation through murder. He is trying to damage and disease it emotionally, as well. Consider the sexual abuse scandals that have left countless boys and girls traumatized & devastated. EVERY TWO MINUTES a child is sexually assaulted in America. Instead of just killing a generation, Satan is trying to poison this one with pain. He knows he can abort young people’s destinies by perpetuating the pain, guilt, rejection, inferiority, depression, low self-esteem and the identity crisis that comes—through the scars left from emotional & sexual abuse.

Can we make any sense of this massacre of a generation? Let us consider for a moment how God can turn this around. In a young generation who’s identity has been lost, misunderstood; traumatized and confused, there is a void that has been created; and there is One who can fill that void of lost and damaged identities. It is our Heavenly Father, who can make all thing beautiful in their time. It is Jesus who can heal the broken-hearted, and bind up their wounds.

As we mourn the loss of these precious and innocent children, let us recognize the greatness of purpose that is hidden within the generation of children who remain. Satan knows how powerful this next generation will become. He knows that God will use them to shake this earth with revival once again. That’s why he is trying so hard to destroy the children. But he will fail again!

Let us recognize that for every voice that has been silenced; every destiny that has been aborted—there is coming an even louder cry of deliverance, compassion and power from the remnant of children who the enemy failed to destroy. And by failing to destroy them, they will be made that much more powerful! And these voices will not be silenced. They are the voices of your children and mine. They are also the voices of the fatherless and abused; the abandoned and broken. As we reach them, and teach them; and pour God’s love into them, their destinies will be ignited and they will sense the purpose for which they were born. They will realize that the enemy took his best shot to destroy them, and failed. These young lambs will become mighty lions for God; they will be the young champions, voices of God’s kingdom of love; healers of the hurting and restorers of the broken.

I believe what appears to be the worst of times in our culture, is actually going to turn into one of the greatest of times, as we reach out to the young generation and ignite their hearts with the purpose and power of God’s great love & destiny for their lives.

Hypocrisy exists in both the world and church. So, it is irrelevant. We can remind people of the right thing to do, but we can't force them to do the right thing. If they aren't listening to God, then whelp....Also, when people are bleeding to death and didn't do anything to deserve it with natural eyes, then we need to point them to the only source that can heal...The church has a done a lot of damage with judgment messages in the wake of tragedy pushing people to hate God. God is not cruel or mean...The devil is and the people who yield themselves to be instruments...

On the other hand, another great solution is that people are examining drug laws and mental health issues that have been ignored....This is a good thing in the natural. We can't prevent all things with laws, but it is a start....

Just thought I would share - unbelievers and believers alike are having trouble reconciling the tragedy in Newton.

Thanks for providing this viewpoint on the tradegy as people try to make sense of it. It's always good to hear all sides of an issue. To deal with a person who suffered cause of it, because the world is so small...one of us may bump into these people unintentionally....

I really don't think the hypocrisy is irrelevant because Jesus didn't. As tragic as the event was - it is a time that people may have a heart softened to the truth. Think about it... as we sit around and condemn this heinous act we all should examine ourselves and come to the realization that our hands may not be as clean as we think they are.

Also, the message of hope can be shared when we all are aware of the vulnerability of life. If the lives of these precious babies could be taken away then our own lives are but a vapor and we should get our lives right with The Lord.
