I\'ve got some breakage......

A little section of my hair has broken off at the demarcation line.

I don't know what caused it-trying to stretch out my relaxer or my new "protective" style. Either way, I don't know what to do. It's under control now, but I'm scared the breakage will spread.

What should I do?????

Re: I\'ve got some breakage......

How are you handling your hair when it is wet? Also, depending on how much new growth you have, I think it's best to leave it alone for a week at a time, meaning no combing/brushing styles. What kind of protective style are you wearing, and does it require you to freshen it up everyday?

When it's wet, I just put in leave-in and oil and comb it back and let it air dry. When it's mostly dry, I put satin rollers in it for about 30 minutes, just the top. The protective style I'm wearing is like a small french roll secured with a side comb in the back and my bangs down in the front. I just started wearing this style a couple of weeks ago...at first I was securing it with two combs, but one of the combs felt like it was putting too much stress on my hair, so I started using just one comb and a clip to keep the hair up at the back. My breakage is in a little section at the back, smaller than a dime right behind my ear lobe/kind of the nape area.

This style does require me to refresh it everyday.

Re: I\'ve got some breakage......

Awww JenJen i'm sorry to hear that. But don't worry it'll grow back (i know that's a sickening response but i have a story behind it)..
one day i woke up and i had a bald spot ..YES A BALD SPOT about 2" back in the front of my head, next to my widow's peak. I didn't know how it got there but it was completely bald!!

I just left it alone and i don't know when or remember how long it took but it did grow back. I didn't use anything to help it either. That happened to me twice (if i recall correctly, sorry, im a candidate for ginkobaloba) and if you were to look at the spot now, you'd never know b/c it is the same length as the rest of the hair.

Is there a way you can do it where it'll last all week, or at least a couple of days? I used to get french rolls done in the salon, but they were done where they could last all week...or two.

They used a stuffing on the inside to give it bulk, and a touch of gel on the edges for hold.

If you don't like the comb, perhaps you can try well-coated bobby pins.

Re: I\'ve got some breakage......

Thanks for the encouragement, CarmelHonee. I needed it! I just needed some assurance that if I'm careful, the breakage won't spread. I'm pretty positive now that the breakage was caused by the tension of using a 2nd side comb.

Re: I\'ve got some breakage......

I remember I had a small bald spot on the edge of my hairline in the front. It was hillarious, because I didn't know where it came from.

I realized that it was either the boar bristle brush I was using too hard on my edges or my plucking dandruff in that area caused me to pluck out my hair as well. I think it was the latter.

In the meantime, massage it with some castor oil. Mine grew back in a month.

At first, it was pretty and curly like baby hair and then it grew in fierce like the rest of my hair.

If your hair is anything like mine ( I know that all heads are different), stretching out the relaxer causes the breakage. I have noticed that the longer my 4b hair goes without a relaxer, the more hair that I loose. The absolute longest that I have been able to go is 6 weeks. The conditioner washes have been helping me alot and I am going to see if I can go longer than 6 weeks before my next relaxer. Another thing that it working for me is conditioner washes with V05 Kiwi and Lime Squeeze conditioner becasue it clarifies while it washes.
Hope ths helps

Re: I\'ve got some breakage......

Karonica and Shana,
Thanks for the advice. I'm at 9 weeks post relaxer so I'll go ahead and get it relaxed and go from there. I'll definitely try the castor oil too!

Hey Jen!

I almost missed this thread!

I am so sorry to hear about your breakage. I think it is wise for you to go ahead and relax. Just make sure also that you pay extra attention to that area that is breaking and provide extra moisture. Good Luck to you.

Re: I\'ve got some breakage......

I was going to suggest not trying to stretch out that relaxer anymore. I'm going to try to stretch mine, but with six weeks of new growth, it's ugly. I do know that if I start to see breakage, I'm going to relax and just try to go longer next time...I hope you were able to get it under control.
