In the top of my head. And it looks like it's getting worse. :(

Please, Please Help!
I knew a couple of months ago that my hair was thinning in that spot but not like that!!! Since I got a fresh relaxer (yesterday, after 12 wk stretch) I'm able to really see it.

Oh, you poor thing...{{HUGS}}

My hair did the same thing a few years back. Mine came from stress. Are you stressed?

Your hair is beautiful btw...:)

Don't be embarass we are all family here, ok I can't say for sure but my co-worker who was having bald spots all over she's about 45, she ordered ultra emu oil and sulphur and massaged that in her hair twice a day and after 2 weeks there was a huge difference, I saw this for myself, apparently the emu which is a carrier oil that penetrates several layers of the skin worked really well with the sulphur to help her, majority of her hair is growing back and its been about 2 mths now, hth:)

(((((((HUG))))))) I am so sorry that you are going through this I have noticed that I too have a bald spot on the side of my head and I know how you are feeling I am so sorry. Do you have any BT? When my hair was thinning around the sides I used it and it helped it grow back in maybe it will help your hair too.

I know there is nothing that I can say to make it better and go away but here is a big (((((((((HUG)))))))))

Short answer, yes.

The last year has been trying in so many ways ... but I am coming out of it so if it's stress hopefully it will improve. But, what if it's not? I don't want to be no bald head bag lady. :ohwell:

Visiting your dermatologist is a good idea.

I've suffered from something similar in the past. Two round bald spots appeared in the back of my head. Those spots were smooth as a baby's bottom. I mean, there was NO hair there at all. I found out when my stylist shrieked and yelled it across the salon.

I think it was caused by stress. Luckily the spaces filled in within a few months.

(To answer KAT25's question) I have Boundless Tresses.

Thanks, guesswho! I want to try the emu oil. Can you get this at any BSS or do you have to order it? And can I just mix it with the BT?

I would also suggest going to a dermatologist especially if it hurt when the wind blew your hair. Then you can go from there as far as treatment is concerned. Good Luck and Happy Growing:)

I can't stress enough how important it is for you to go to a dermatologist now before self treating. The earlier you get medical treatment, the better your own self treatments will work. Derms have ointments and topical medications that reduce the inflamation in your scalp which will be key in recovering that area for healthy growth to come back. Good luck.

Sorry this happened to you. You might not want to perm that area for a while to let it heal.

oooh, owtch! It looks painful!
I lost hair when my dad died, alopecia areata- a smooooth round patch. I was lucky, just rubbed some tea tree oil on it and had a doc look at it and it's growing back nicely.
Yours looks more intense than mine, it just LOOKS owie!!
Hopefully the derm helps asap!
ETA: I just remembered, one of the few relaxers I had in the past, I got a chemical burn at the nape of my neck and had to go to the ER and they gave me a streoid cream to regenerate the skin tissue and let the hair finally grow back. Maybe this is what happened to you? Is there any oozing or scabbing?

She ordered it from fnwl.com she used the ultra emu oil, but do go to the doc forst and after the docs evaluation proceed with the emu and sulfur I believe this might help you if all else fails, good luck chica:)

Hey Shaydufblu -

My hair looks similar to yours, but I've been thinning/shedding for two years now. Keep in mind that there are different types of hair loss and they look different. Please see your derm right away, since it's hurting your scalp is almost certainly inflamed--inflammation and soreness almost always accompany hair loss.

My diagnosis was scarring alopecia. You may want to Google alopecia to see some photos of other women who suffer from it and to decide if this looks and sounds similar to what you're experiencing. The derm may biopsy your scalp to determine the type of thinning you have. It's a horrible experience and I feel awful for you. I'm right here with you on this one, so at least know you're not alone out here; there are several women on the board who've suffered or who are suffering different types of hair loss. Good luck with this, and please keep us updated.

(BTW, I also use emu oil. After a couple of months I can't say it's growing back my hair (nothing has), but I'm giving it a few more months since I have heard it has been shown to regrow hair if the follicles are still viable; I'm not sure mine are as the scarring is said to be a permanent thing. Emu bonus--it keeps your skin pretty clear if you take the pills or use it as a moisturizer!).

How old are you Shayduflbu? Does baldness run in the family? I did a quick search for thinning hair (coz I thought you might have androgenic alopecia) but most sites were suggesting Rogaine/minoxidil and I don't like it.

I did find an article that mentions some causes and lists some natural remedies that you might want to check with your doctor whether it's OK to take them.
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0820/is_1999_Oct/ai_55905582

My next suggestion is going to sound really out there, but what have you get to lose? Start doing a scalp flex exercise that has not only helped pple thicken their hair but also helped with hairgrowth and may also delay graying. If you can move your ears voluntarily, you already have the idea. If not work at it till you can do it without effort...and then do it as often as you can think of it. Tom Haggerty from whom I learned the exercise is 74 has a full head of hair (I believe he was losing some when he started but now has a thick head. His hair is also very dark for a 74 year old man. Go figure). The exercise is described here: http://hairloss-reversible.com/ (If you don't want to read the entire website, I think the exercise explanation starts here: http://hairloss-reversible.com/my_approach.htm and continues here: http://hairloss-reversible.com/my_approach2.htm)

You must try Nioxin Follicle Booster. It is AMAZING!! My mother had a spot of 15 year old follicle damage fill in within 1 month. I have some crown thining and I have been using it for 2 mos. with great results.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I'm 27, and not sure if baldness runs in the family; I've heard (from a cousin) that one of my aunts had some hair issues but have yet to confirm that. I just found out that my sister had some thinning in the same area, but she said her stylist was doing some kind of treatments that helped it to start growing back. She knows I've been under some stress the past year, but she was like "go with what the ladies on the hair board tell you to do!" I'm going to check out the sites you ladies suggested and try to see the derm as soon as I can.

mermaid: no oozing or scabbing, it's just sore in that area. It has always been tender in that area of my head for as long as I can remember. It does tend to itch there, though. :scratchch

Oh my ((hugs!!)) I know how you feel. After my stylist balded me from leaving on the perm too long (and told me it was stress) one too many times I was through. Can you ixnay on the perming for good or maybe find out if maybe the type/brand etc is too strong. Maybe something about the process is causing this? Maybe start doing some sulphur 8 on the scalp to get the hair growing again.

Awww! I am sorry that is happening to you! I use to have a Bald spot in my crown area, a huge spot. it would be sore and tender I tried everything for the hair to grow back but nothing worked until I stopped Relaxing my Hair, Mine started to bald when I was about 27/28yrs. old, I thought that was weird, but I have no Family History of Baldness, But once I stopped Relaxing and Permanent Coloring within a 2 months my spot filled in.

Let us know what the Derm. says to you!

Massaging is also very good with stimulating oils.

Please try the BT it worked for me and my bald spots. My head used to get them all the time but I havent had a flareup since I started using MTG or BT.

I am sorry you are going thru this. I had bald spots all over at one point. Two in the back, real shiny ones. Once I went natural for a one-year period, they pretty much filled in.

Two on each temple, which have been there practically all of my teen and adult life, which I am still working on. I got those two when an aunt singed off the hair with a hot comb and I think she damaged my follicles there.

And two at the top of my hairline (front of forehead) which are slowly filling in. I got those two from a wig I wore when I was natural. I have decided not to relax my hairline for the next year or how ever I can handle it, to give it a chance to fill in.

I feel your pain. I think you should visit a derm because if it hurts, then you need to get to the bottom of what is causing that. In the meantime, the ladies here have given you some great ideas. Stretching relaxers for a while would be a good idea also. I wish you luck. Keep us posted. Remember you are not alone.

 :( Ya'll didn't warn me for how bad it was gonna hurt. :(

I went to the derm today. She thinks it's alopecia, but doesn't know exactly what kind, so of course they did a biopsy. OW!!!!! I was thinking, just a little tingle, maybe it won't be too bad. Man, I wanted her to GTFOWTBS! It's 2 1/2 hrs later and my head is still hurting.

Ok, so I'm a crybaby. Wah!

I hope it's not the scarring alopecia. I'll know the results in a week so I'll update then. Thanks for the support.

||According to the doc, this seems to be very common among AA women. In your experience, is that true?

I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear that you're going through this right now. I'm glad you went to see a derm. I saw that you were using a sulphur based product and wanted to warn you that you need to make sure your hair near your scalp stays moisturized because sulphur is really drying.

I've had a simular problem while using sulphur based product where I lost a lot of hair in my crown area. Basically, I didn't know about keeping that area moisturized. I'm still using the sulphur based product but only in that area to hopefully grow it back ASAP!

I was going to say it looks as though it could be alopecia, especially as you said it hurt. I'm sorry your going through this, I have two minor bald spots in my nape area :( .

Did you ask your derm, what you could use to heal and grow that area? Did you ask her whether you would be OK using sulphur on that area? If you didn't I would ask these on your next visit, then I would suggest you follow the advise of the ladies in the thread

Good luck chica and keep us updated ;)

Yeah--that biopsy does smart a bit! I had one done; I also got a bunch of cortisone shots to the scalp at the same time--it was pretty painful. I do hope as well that you're not diagnosed with scarring.

And from ALL my research (a lot since I was diagnosed), it seems a variety of alopecias are becoming increasingly common in AA women, particularly the scarring kind that they equate with hairstyles that pull and relaxers.

Please update us as soon as you get your diagnosis; I'm wishing you the best.

Im so sorry and i feel your pain too. I had noticed a couple of bald spots on my head. Despite the stress that i have been under in the past year..for some reason i had a very strong feeling it had to do with relaxing my hair. Since i started transitioning almost 5 months ago...most of spots have grown back and ive even grown back some in my hairline that i had NO IDEA was even missing in the first place.

UPDATE
OK, so here's the update:

Went back to the DR. today. Diagonosis is that it's not scarring alopecia! :yay: :dance7:

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!

Tests results came back and said that it looks like seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) or folliculitis(ewwww). :perplexed The DR. gave me some shampoo to use (Loprox) and a topical medication (Clobetasol - a corticosteriod) to reduce itching. There are running blood tests to make sure it's not related to liver, kidney, thyroid, etc. I'm just so happy I can keep my hair I don't mind doing all this other stuff. She is so quick, in and out, that I didn't get to ask her abt. using BT but I plan to once I call her on Friday.

Thoughts about the dandruff:
I have always had dandruff issues, not so much here lately though, so I completely stopped trying to treat it. Guess it was still there, huh.

Thoughts abt. folliculitis:
I gotta go find that thread abt it.

I will keep you guys posted, but if you have any advise it is surely welcome! Thanks for all of your support guys! It really meant a lot to me. :o

Beware--Clobetasol is really good but it can cause scalp thinning. Don't overuse it AND wear a hat if you go out in the sun as your scalp can very easily get burned. Glad to hear you don't have alopecia!

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so glad for you. Thinning and bald patches are no joke and they really can affect your mood and outlook and self-esteem.

I had a thinning area that was turning into a bald patch similar to yours but further back on the crown of my head. I started using Nizoral 2% shampoo once a week and now use once a month or so, and that helped tremendously. The bald patch is completely filled in though the hair there is still a little thinner/finer than the rest of my hair.

I also take a hair vitamin and biotin and use the Nexxus Vitatress Biotin Creme. I think these are all helping too.
