I manually did a big chop on my hair today

I took a scissors and hacked through
However I have unsightly patches on my hair (not caused from my scissors) and I'm wondering if I should shave it down to a fade/bald tomorrow when I get a skull cap wig made for me?

I'm surprised at the patches tbh they came from nowhere and I don't wear braids nor do I wear tight weave most of my hair has been in a short Rihanna style and the top in weave

You said you wore weave in the top portion for the Rihanna style...perhaps the weave, the ongoing use of it and/or the removal of it may account for the baldness. You didn't big chop to address the damaged areas because you were surprised by it once you saw it. Have you considered scheduling an appointment with a dermatologist and/or your medical doctor to ensure that there is no internal cause for the hair loss?

Its good that you big chopped, now you can resolve the hair loss issue and move forward in your journey. You will get pass this setback. LHCF ladies are here to help you along the way.

You don't need to shave it completely but you will need to keep it close until you heal your scalp. You want to avoid any types of braids right now.

I agree with the previous poster about seeing a specialist.

How often did you wash and conditioner your hair with the weave?

Did you wear a quick weave?

First, I would go to the doctor to see if something is medical issue. I would shave it off and start over.

First of all congratulations on your big chop!!! You've made a great decision for your hair journey. If I were you I would rock a fade and give those areas time to heal.

Please don't get a fade, go to my youtube channel and look at my video showing my old bald spots-much worse than yours. the longer hair will help to mask the baldness as your hair grows back.

Then go to the video showing my onion mask recipe. It will remove the dead skin from your scalp so your follicles can penetrate the scalp. I started putting the videos up 2 years ago and it has helped a lot of people.

Yes it's quick weave I wore at the top

This is the style I used to wear
I doubt it caused the baldness as it was never tight

This was the weave

This was the weave. Because my sides were out I would wash it regularly to re gel it the middle not so much though

The sides look very low in the pic with the weave...did you only have to BC the top? Was your BC fade-length? If so then another fade probably won't help.

I agree to see a derm or a doctor before trying at-home remedies.

Was glue used, if so your scalp may have had an adverse reaction to it. I also think you should see a derm., good luck!

ITA w/the ladies about the doctor. It's no use to employ these great retention techniques if you've got underlying issues working against them.

I started from a fade MANY times. I'm happy I began with the fade because I could start using healthy hair practices on fresh hair.

Also, I used the few months that it was too short to do anything but WNG and DC to research all of the possible setbacks and mishaps and try to prevent them. It was easier to experiment on shorter hair as well. I learned to find my moisture-protein balance and I still use those techniques 3 years later.

Congratulations on your BC! GL on your decision and your journey! :)

See the derm, but all is not lost... Your hair loss is mostly concentrated at the top, so it is most definately from the weave. You look like you have FINE type 4 hair. It might be too fragile for weaves, quick weaves, glue, sew ins, don't matter. Many fine haired cant cornrow or braid or keep the edges gelled and laid for very long or it breaks towards the root. I also learned tis the hard way :nono:

looking at the pics those don't appear to be SMOOTH patches as in dead follicles. there seems to be some stubble growing in and that's a good sign the hair will grow back. so I wouldn't totally freak out.

So, no more weaves. And for the love of all things--do NOT get a relaxer until you're all healed.

cut it to a fade and be free! don't be bothered with the wig. have the freedom and the choice to wear your own hair out. it will give you a fresh new start on your HHJ.

^^^^I agree^^^^ Shave it off to a fade and then baby your hair and scalp. Look into things you can do to stimulate your scalp and make sure you wash your hair (even if you just let water run over your hair/scalp) at least three to four times per week. Since you weren't aware of the hair loss, your dermatologist can help you find the cause of it.

If you feel like you have to wear a wig don't use any combs, pins, glue, or even straps. Get a full silk or stain bonnet (one where the elastic is covered by the material) and put the wig over that. When you get home take it off and let your scalp breathe. Congrats on your big chop!!!

Could it be ring worm? I've seen kids who got it on their scalp and the hair falls out in patches , but it does grow back. Maybe u got it from the hairdresser and then the warm, dark and damp environment kept it there?? Definitely see a derm GL

^^ I was thinking ringworm, too. Do you have more clear pictures? What causes ringworm? Ringworm is not caused by a worm. It is caused by a fungus. The kinds of fungi (plural of fungus) that cause ringworm live and spread on the top layer of the skin and on the hair. They grow best in warm, moist areas, such as locker rooms and swimming pools, and in skin folds. http://www.symptoms-ringworm-treatment.com/causes-of-ringworm.html

:bighug:OP, since you bc'd and found this issue I would fade my hair. I would also go to the dermatologist. Until you get to the doctor I would shower my head often and massage my scalp daily with eo mix.

Good luck to you and sorry for your loss. You will get through this.:bighug:

I agree about seeing a dermatologist. Good luck. And if it is ringworm you may not need to shave it off. My little 5 year old nephew got a bad case if ringworm 2 years ago, and he lost lots of hair in patches like that. The deem recommended to shave, but his dad refused. So the derm agreed to treat it with the hair if he promised to wash his hair daily, and strictly follow the regimen. All his hair grew back in about 6 months.

Oh wow. I'll bet your stylist saw the damage and didn't say anything.

You can turn this around. Good luck!

No offense but I find it hard to believe that you had no idea there was that much damage, even with the fade and weave up top. I think you should just fade it. When the hair starts growing back it's going to grow slower than the rest of your hair so you might as well have a clean slate. Plus you've already had short hair styles, so maybe it won't be too dramatic for you. Until you are able to see a derm maybe you should try Tea tree or neem oil massages to try to combat infection (if any).
