I've done everything right, so why

is my hair falling out like crazy!? I have not relaxed in 6 weeks, and I have not used heat in 4 weeks. I wash my hair every three-5 days. I moisture and oil to seal. I wear my hair in buns which is my standard protection style. I am wearing my hair down for the first time in six weeks tomorrow (braid out.) I use olive oil, or my argon oil mixture, and I seal with mixed chicks sallys brand. What am I doing wrong? When I say wash my hair I mean co wash and wash with shampoo once a week.

When exactly is it falling out: wet, dry, or during manipulation? Is it in clumps or just strands? Is it from the root (with bulb) or demarcation line (breakage)? Is your current stress level higher than usual? Have you added new supplements/vitamins to your dietary regimen? What are your current products in rotation?

Yea, a lot of questions, but... :ohwell:

Have you ever done a protein treatment to it? After you wash it, what do you DC (deep condition) with?

How does your hair look and feel? When was your last trim? When is the last time you had a protein treatment? When my hair falls out like crazy I try not to comb or bother it too much. Washing/Cowashing your hair every 3-5 days seems like a lot of manipulation.

Are you sure you properly neutralized after you relaxed? When I joined LHCF, it was after my Hair Fell Out from Improper Neutralization (at a Salon). This led me here.

I've been a victim. Nothing can wreck your hair faster than Improper Neutralization.

Even if you're doing the "right things" if you left any trace of relaxer in your hair, it's going to continue to process and eat away at your progress.

If you are talking about from the root, you may want to look internally.

Are you stressed? That could be a factor.

Are you anemic? My girlfriend is severely anemic and her hair was constantly falling out from the root until she started taking iron supplements.

Its only been 4 to 6 weeks (as you noted) so give your hair time to 'act right'. It doesnt happen over night. It took me 8 months after i reaaaally started caring for my hair to see any improvements.

It is breakage. It is not from the root. It falls out during manipulation. Even when I oil my scalp my hands are covered in hair. I keep my regime simple. I use all natural oils like olive oil, coconut oil, and aragon oil. I work out a lot and I work in food, so I need to wash my hair often. I have not done a protein treatment. Looks like that is what I need.

It sounds like you're doing "everything right" according to someone else's regimen...

I had this same issue and part of it was needing a protein treatment and part of it is that leaving oil on my hair makes it weaker. I mostly just use it in my scalp now and if some ends up in my hair it almost gone by the time I'm done conditioning.

For me coconut oil was drying, it works like a protein on my hair. I can't use the stuff and it caused breakage. Usually if my ends are breaking, I need a trim. When was your last trim?

Keep in mind that a healthy hair journey takes time. You should see some improvement over a 6 month time period.

In the meantime, make sure that you're eating healthy, drinking plenty of water, lots of dark leafy greens like spinach and kale. Are you taking a multivitamin? Whenever I fail to watch my internal routine, my hair suffers for it.

Happy hair growth!

Sounds like it is either damage (most likely caused by improper relaxer technique, heat, or color) or lack of protein. I'd use a neutralizing shampoo as suggested above just in case, follow with a heavy protein, then DC.

protein is what caused me breakage, so go to a professional so he/she can access your hair and tell you what you need.

I understand you are using a great deal of oils, but what moisturizers are being used prior to?

If you do decide to compete a protein treatment remember to follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner.

Also, coconut oil is known to make hair straw like when used on dry hair. Coconut oil is best used on wet hair when using as a moisturizer.

You need some Roo in your doo. In other words, you need moisture. Sounds like protein overload and that is not a joke. Assess your strand size so you can determine products you should and should not be using. Co washing may not be your friend either. Perhaps you give your hair a rest from manipulation and see how that works too.

Please excuse my iPhone; it's trying to get it together

I've read thisba few times and I've read everyone's replies and I still have a question. You mentioned moisturizing, but I don't see your moisture listed. I only see you listed oils and then sealing with more oil. Am I missing something? Before getting into the protein treatment I would address dryness and appropriate moisturizing. Dry hair will break also. If you're new to your journey, you may want to get a professional opinion on your hair's needs and health.

As far as moisture goes I use water, sally's brand of mixed chicks, and Dr, Miracles leave in conditioner. I think I will stop with the coconut oil. I don't use it too much but it does seem to dry out my hair. I think I need more moisture in my life lol!

The question is, is your hair falling out or is it breaking at the root? Falling out suggest an internal health issue. Breaking off is a hair issue. ETA: nevermind, I read upthread. When you are using relaxer you always risk hair breaking off at root. That was my relaxer story no matter what strength or technique I used. If its not that, then I have no idea. I seriously doubt it's protein overload.

I agree. My hair goes from very thick to thin from root to tip. My tips are bone straight, and as you travel up the shafy my hair gets thicker. I started texlaxing for while. I also died my hair my natural color (black) to hide the damage. But that is just CRAZY! I should not be trying to hide the problem I need to fix it. I may just have to start all over. :perplexed

^^^^^^ that has been reported as the devil of breakage. Do a search here on LHCF

Clarify, do a protein treatment, a moisturizing deep conditioner and throw that in the trash!!! Don't even put it in your plumbing!:nono:

ETA: Someone made a new post in this thread (which is one of many about Dr. Miracles products resulting in hair loss)

Maybe you are not using the right products/techniques for your hair. You might have to do some experimenting. Most of us found our regimens by trial and error. For example, many on the board love co-washing but my hair prefers shampoo. My hair doesn't like coconut oil but other people love it. If you notice that your current regimen is not working for you it is time to make some changes. Start by making simple changes. The least complicated, the better. Try washing with a moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioning with a moisturizing conditioner afterward. Then add your leave in. You can seal with an oil or skip the oil. I guess this is my long winded way of saying there is no set "right" way to do things. The right way is what works for your hair.

I've read negative things about Dr. Miracles also. I would clarify, do a moisturizing DCing session and then reassess. If no improvement, seek help from a stylist to get things in check so that you can move forward on your HHJ. If you know for certain it's protein overload, adding 1 tsp (up to 1 tbsp) of salt in your conditioner works wonders and breaks the protein bond.
