I never got this kind of attention b/c I've had hair that was APL or longer most of my life, but I did get a comment from a stranger the other day.

Last week I shampooed my hair on Sunday and put it up in a braided bun and didn't take it down til the next Sunday to poo it again. So this week, I decided to wear my hair out (just cause I felt like it) and this guy (who I saw last week w/ the bun in) was like, "Dang you got some long, thick hair. Why do you hide it? That hair is beautiful. You should wear it down all the time." I was  and :D I explained that it's just easier to wash it and bun it. He told me that he thought my hair was damaged or really short since I was always wearing a bun. I said, "Nope. It's not damaged or short BECAUSE I wear it in a bun." ;)

I did smile and get that warm, fuzzy feeling and I spent time admiring my tresses in the mirror that night. :look:

Keep up the good work ladies!!!

Hello to all the great ladies on the board.

I had to come out of lurking mode because your post made me laugh and think back to when I knew all of my efforts and crazy hair days were not in vain. I have been natural for almost 5 years now, and it seems like I have grown three new heads of hair in that time because I have had to constantly cut/trim due to tangles and dryness.

Let me get back to the point....my boyfriend was not that thrilled with my hair when I decided to go natural,(he was used to seeing me with fresh hair styles and perms because I had a standing 2 week appt. with my beautician). I have to say that I had alot of jacked up hair days before I got to the healthy, great hair days.

Well, a few months ago, I decided to do something different because I was tired of my puff. (It had been about 8 months since I had last straightened my hair.) I blowdried and flat ironed my hair and at that point is was at arm pit length - very full, thick and shiney. My boyfriend gave me the wierdest look and then asked if I had gone to the salon and had extensions put in. I just cracked up laughing because I was like - I have not been to a salon in almost 5 years ...after all this hard work and reprogramming my mind/attitude about beauty as it pertains to our hair - now it is really paying off.

Thanks for the welcome OnceUponATime!

Everyone here is so positive and encouraging. I have learned a lot of good tips and lot of things have just been trial and error. I was always good about taking care of my hair even when I had a perm and before I learned about hair boards. I had to let go of the chemicals because my hair was constantly breaking/shedding and scalp sensitivity made worse by medications. I still get frustrated with my hair but not nearly as much as I used to. Unfortunately, I have started slacking off of my routine so I have got to get back to a good wash/deep condition routine before I have to do a major cut again. :look:

It is funny because my coworkers keep up with my hair - but in a good way. When I first went natural, they referred to it as the little puff and now they call it Puffus Maximus.

I'm still getting used to being noticed for my hair. I wear phony buns and ponies to work and wear it loose or plaited on the weekends. I'm only APL, but I wore it loose and pressed to work and recieved so many compliments. Now I've formed a little "hair club" at work and the ladies come and ask my opinion for hair care. I got one person to join LHCF, but she never came out of lurk mode. I went to the church of one of my collegues (who happens to be White) and wore my wash and go. She loved it. Kept telling the rest of the office to bug me to wear it to work. She has a facination with the coils.

My mom was my first cheerleader. She would PJ shop with me and shares my progress with the rest of the family. She loves to brag about my hair success. I even got her hooked on Surge! For years she kept cutting her hair because she was battling alopecia, but now she sports a single braid. She still has some areas of alopecia that will probably never repiar, but now she doesn't feel the need to cut her hair short anymore! She doesn't have a goal, but she is tooooo cute tugging at her hair to show me her progress. She's just past shoulder length.

:woot: Go mommy, :woot: go mommy :woot:
:yay:

"Puffus Maximus", love it!! I get a lot of support from co-workers also. They all keep up with my hair antics. I even ask them to sniff the air and make sure my MTG isn't being offensive. They think it's funny, so do I.

You are so right about the care. When I found this board, my hair was breaking off so fast, I thought I would go bald. I stopped going to the stylist, stopped relaxing and completly transitioned after reading so many great hair tips. I use tips from both relaxed and natural. It's all basically the same for me, which is clean, well conditioned and protected hair. After that, it's just what techniques and products work best for my hair.

OnceUponATime,

That is such an encourageging story about your hair success. And way to go for your mom!!! It is really great that you can support each other and it is so nice to hear that she is your biggest supporter.

When I first went natural, my family just looked at me curiously and would make jokes here and there. But now they are my biggest supporters. One day my sister was blowdrying my hair for me and for some reason my other sisters and nieces thought that I was about to put a relaxer on my hair. They rushed over and almost knocked in the door and were about to hold an intervention. My niece was breathless and she said....No!!!....what are you doing??? you can put a perm in your hair and my other sister comes rushing up behind her and says we are here to stop you!!!!

Don't get me wrong I think that hair is beautiful whether it is relaxed or natural as long as it is healthy.. If my hair would have been healthy when I had a relaxer, I probably would not have tried going natural.

I don't really look for confirmation when it comes to my hair, but a comment is nice to hear now and then.:)

About 4 weeks ago I had shampooed and conditioned my hair. I was right in the middle of combing it out when my younger brother stopped in. He came in the bathroom and looked at my hair and siad, "It takes about 4 packs of hair to get that long on other girls"!

Wow, this is a great thread! I'm so excited that new ladies joined LHCF since yesterday and actually posted on my thread. :D

YEAAA! I'm so excited to post this. Okay, so Saturday, I met this new guy (friend of a friend) and I hit it off really well with him and his cousin (gotta get points with the fam). So I'm sitting down conversing with other people and I could hear him and his cousin trying to talk like they're whispering but loud enough so they knew I would hear. They were acting like they were rating me, like good v bad (needless to say they were all good :D ). And one of the things he said was, "Yea she got good hair." I wish I had LHCF on speed dial!:lachen: I was so happy. Now granted, my hair isn't as long as other ladies on here, but it was nice to know that they (he) appreciated my hair (and minus the "good hair/bad hair comment, not everyone is as knowledgable as us).

Then on Sunday when I went home, one of the first things my older cousin said was, "I'm so glad you're growing your hair out!" I was like, she can tell! It really shows! You love me, you really love me!:lachen: Okay, I didn't say all that, that was extra.

Love the "good hair" comment! :lachen:

Y'all know I was excited to! :lachen: I wanted to swing it like I had some 3c curls! I was happy, I could put my lil 2 inches around my shoulder to one side bwahahaha:lol:

Don't get me wrong about hair types, I LOVE my hair. But we all know the mindset we grew up with.

My boyfriend rolled on my hair while he was taking a nap, and I was trying to escape... I told him to move, you're on my hair!! and then he said that my hair is getting so long. I didn't even notice that my hair had grown so much, and it's getting longer, I told him to watch out!! cause it's gonna get longer.

I'm sure you feel really good inside. There is a special feeling that goes along with any goal we accomplish, but with our hair, it's special because its always been so hard to reach that particular goal, and when we do we get excited about it. Congratulations on reaching your first goal!
