TRANSITION OVER! 11-22-14
I am officially throwing in the towel. my hair is fighting the twists and I end up spending the whole day fixing them. I guess I will go back to daily co washing.:ohwell: My hair loves to be wild and free. It's growing and I am retaining length thanks to aloe vera juice and the gel. I no longer get single strand knots. I'm hoping soon to be able to grow hair long enough to bun.:yep:

i don't bother with protective styles currently. i wear twist outs and puffs. i don't do wash and gos anymore too. my tangles and sheds too much for all of that.

I've had long hair and short hair and my hair has always fought protective styles... I've tried everything and just end up looking like a jack*ss... They dont last longer than a day... Twists and braids just slip out and I look like a first grader after recess with random loose twists in my head... Wash and goes are what my hair wants to do and im tired of fighting!

I just make sure I keep it detangled and moisturized and wrapped and baggied at night and its pretty happy :)

I dunno your current length OP but I didnt find a real need to PS untill I was a bit past SL.

Just enjoy your hair at each stage and PS when you feel your retention is suffering from loose styles and it sounds like you are retaining loose.

How long is your hair now OP? I know when I shaved off my hair some years ago i didn't do styles like twists until i had a good amount of hair, otherwise they would unravel or just not look right. Until that point i just worked with puffs or cornrows.

This!

What can I say, the hair wants what it wants. Glad you figured it out OP. :yep:

I'm with you OP!! My hair hates PS too. I even think when it's gets longer, it just won't work! Buns, co-washes and stretching with rollersets or wrapping is all it likes :ohwell:

My hair is nose level when I try to measure it.:lol: I'm going to take some pictures again and restart my fotki. I deleted my past pics. So far, I am doing excellent with my hair. I am enjoying my natural hair....finally!:yep:

@DDTexlaxed if that protective style didn't work for you, just try other ones. I don't do twists because I'll end up looking like Shirley Temple LOL But I do ponytails and buns. When my hair was NL I did ponytails (well more like puffs LOL) and made sure to put a satin cap at night to protect my hair.

I wouldn't give up on protective styling just yet. Just find the one that works for you.

ITA with some of the posters about PS changing as you gain length. PS has become imperative since I have gotten to SL and past. I don't like hardcore PS but any style that keeps my ends(mostly my nape) from being rubbed excessively works for me! When I was SL and above(I miss those days) I was the wash and go queen. I was like "What? PS who me? No sir" That whole tune changed when I saw my ends getting ate up by my shirt.

I will say that I just dont like twists on my hair they unravel and just look sickly. Only way the look good is if I do them on dry hair and take a large amount of hair. Any other way they look like twizzlers left out on the counter for days...nasty and dry and werid shaped.

THank God... I found someone else who feels the same way. For a while there, I thought I was just weird because my hair does not thrive in twists. My ends always end up a knotted mess..

Now that my hair is a little longer, I am wearing two mini buns with bangs out until my hair is long enough for a single bun. But yeah, maybe at some point I will revisit twists, but my hair seems to be doing fine without them.

Its good you found what your hair like and don't like.... ;)
My hair like protective styles, well buns in particular anything else dry my hair out.

Just remember, everythang ain't for everybody. I personally despise protective styles. As a result, I don't do them and it's ok. Do what works for you and your hair. It sounds like you are!

This may be a little offtopic, but my hair hates 2 strand twist. I detangle my hair, apply a cream to my hair twist it up. Now after its dry, I'll take them down to do a twist out. Thats when I realize how tangled my hair is.
 DDTEXLAXED may your hair dont like twist either.
Mines love braids and braid outs.row"]

Right now, I am trying to learn how to do French braids. I'd be real big and bad when I get that style DOWN PAT!:lachen::yep:

Like previous posters said maybe you should try other protective styles or just wait until you get around SL.

I couldn't do any protective styles other than braids and bantu knots until I got past SL, but now the longer my hair gets, the less ppl see it lol
