And I'm Dancing...
I am experiencing this right now and I'm not sure if it is caused by rapid growth, or thickening of the shaft? If you are experiencing such, how do you alleviate the pain??? And why does it hurt so bad???

TIA!

The same thing used to happen to me when I was relaxed. Never knew what caused it though. Keeping the new growth moisturized, not manipulating the hair too much and scalp massages used to help me.

I get soreness when my hair grows right in the top of my head. Scalp massages and tea tree oil help me A LOT!!

Oh god I was going through this a few days ago(im natural) and my scalp felt like absolute hell! i couldnt even part my hair...it was a mess

I just had to bare with it

ITA,
In addition to the above, I also oil my scalp for comfort.

I get this all of the time, because I have so much hair. I find that if I am able to keep my roots blown straight and keep the hair well moistened that soreness is non existent.

I never had a problem with soreness. I remember one of my friends named Stacy had this problem but I dont know what causes it.

i'm in braids right now, surging and using emu oil and sulfur 8 for moisturizer (alternate days) can't possbly mosturize anymore...can i???

I don't have a problem with sorness but itching, and little mounds of dry oil (it's the only way I can describe them) when my hair is in a growth cycle. The only thing that seems to help is washing my hair every 4 days or so.

mine is right now!!!sometimes my scalp itches so bad i want to tear it off. sometimes it just outright burns i was gonna see a dr. but by the time i get fed up it goes away.

I started to post about this subject a few days ago... It seems like when my new growth starts growing in thick, I can't keep my hands out of it, I'm scratching my scalp and putting my fingers into the new growth all the time, and then my scalp gets sooo sore!! OUCH!!

I really need help in keeping my hands away from my scalp!!

i almost never scratch my scalp. it's never dry, but it hurts and it doesn't itch at all...almost like i can feel my hair growing. the weirdiest feeling. i can understand it hurting if you scratch it...but this pain s from the har growing out of the scalp.

OK, yeah, that is weird... mine only hurts after I've been scratching it, or if my hair bands were in too tight...

I am now experiencing major soreness and itchiness of the scalp...my scalp is experiencing a growth spurt of hair---trying to replenish the 4.5 inches I just chopped off..

I gently scratch my scalp and then apply my oil formulation to help relieve the discomfort...

Bumping for any new response or ideas.

Currently 8.5 weeks post and the top of my head is really sore?? Should I go ahead and relax.

Does anyone know what causes this....I'm moisturized, I wash frequently...no clue.

It's funny that I said this back in June 2004. When I decided to transition to natural and when I started taking Super B-Complex, I experienced that soreness and a major headache during Christmas time. To alleviate the pain, I took some Tylenol PMs.

My scalp is never sore and I rarely have any itching since I started my daily CO washes. The only time I have major soreness is if I do cornrows, with the soreness being from the tightness. I haven't had cornrows in over a year, though. I try to massage my scalp about 3 times a week, but especially before I do my overnight pre-poo treatment. I am 10 weeks post this week, and my scalp feels fine. I get a headache if I clip my hair up and the clip is tugging on my new growth. I also get one if my updo/pin up has pins that tug on the new growth.

Well I don't do braids...all I do is a pony tail. I didn't even realize it was sore until I was sectioning it off to oil my hair. I'll just see what happens, maybe it will pass.

I recall asking the very same question here a few months back and I still haven't gotten an answer... I guess it's just one of those things that will never truly be solved. Kinda like Bigfoot and Area 51
*que the x-files theme*.

I found this question and response posted on another site . The answer came from a member named Monicurl. Maybe this has something to do with what you are experiencing. HTH :

Hi. Im wondering am I going crazy or what! I am in my fifth month of transition, I have a nice poof of new growth going on, with the plan of the big chop coming in April or June (I kinda want to see how long I can take it!). I have 18 inches of relaxed hair to go along with my 4-5 inches of new growth, but lately..as in the last couple of weeks, my head has been hurting. My scalp is tender, not sore, but more tender than normal. Also I can't stand tying my hair up at night, its getting to the point that my edges hurt as I tie it up. But in the same breath, I can't not sleep with something on my head. Im 26 and I have never slept a night in my life almost without my hair being tied up. But this new found tenderness is driving me crazy. On a day to day basis Im just lightly brushing my hair into a ponytail or a bun. I wash (or try to) twice a week, and only comb with the conditioner in. I am basically no poo, with a shampoo every 3 months or so...I noticed my tenderness more when Im trying to massage my scalp, but I hate this...my scalp is healthy and so is my hair, but the tenderness is noticeable. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to stage 3 of the natural journey - scalp ache, brought on by healing. I talk about this is detail in the Voices book, but here's a brief on it:

Ever have a cut or sore begin the healing process and itch or feel achy? It's the same thing. I know, it sounds like a myth, but it makes perfect sense. The nerve endings you'd been subjecting to a numbing agent, aka your relaxer, are beginning to revive. Notice how when you first ever got relaxers, they burned even if you did not scratch your scalp, but as time went on you began to be able to tolerate them better? That is because your scalp basically is scarred from the chemical continual assault.
This should be evidence enough for anyone that relaxers do damage far below the scalp line.

The scalp is filled with nerve endings that react to the slightest touch because the skin is quite thin. Need more proof? How do you know something is touching your hair ends? Super sensitive nerve endings.

So, once again you have reached another stage of the journey! Don't worry, it does not last long.. I'd say a few months at the most.

I always had a sore scalp as a child whenever my mother washed my hair. I was natural and the hair was air dryed. I recently experienced this same soreness after experimenting with air drying my relaxed hair. For me the cause is the natural curl pattern of my hair (which is really tight), pulling against my scalp. The pain is unbearable so I have to take tylenol. The only way I can stop it is to wait nearly a week and it seems to go away by itself, or rewash and blowdry the roots dry. My sister has the same problem and says it happens every time she doesn't completely dry the roots of her relaxed hair.

I think it has something to do with new growth. I have been experiencing this as long as I can remember especially around the time when it needs a good wash! I been six weeks since I last relaxed. I have a lot of new growth.
