In Essence magazine they did a piece on hair coloring. They stated that for natural hair, semi-permanent would not work as well because the hair isn't porous and one should use permanent instead.

LOL...did they test Bigen dye? Bigen will cling to almost anything including space aliens. You might need to try a few to see what works, but think about this...how many people use Manic Panic and do so w/o having relaxers or peroxide to create porosity?
Perhaps you might be having trouble seeing the dye in dark hair, but it's staining. Of course, you can't take your hair LIGHTER w/o peroxide, but you can go darker or lay a lighter color on top for an affect.

I have been using Henna/Indigo for the past year and I have not had an issue with the color taking at all.

LOL! I know I tried the Colorshowers (dark brown) and it clung a little to my greys but it basically didn't stay on my hair. I know some of the other commercial semi-permanment brands, like L'Oreal's ColorMatch, are supposed to be good but to me they're still a little stronger than something like cellophane.
