I've been noticing a lot of strands of hair in the tub after I finish detangling it.... how much hair is too much to lose?

This is a picture of what I collected... (the white stuff is just shampoo):

I'm not so sure. I read on a blog somewhere that as your hair gets longer, even when you lose the same amount of hair as before, at a glance, it looks like loads more cos of the increased length. Could that be it?

Hmm maybe... I hope that's it...

it's kinda strange to me though because I leave my hair in cornrows and only mess with it once a week to wash, condition, etc.... so I don't know why there would be that much hair loss.

If it's more than 100 hairs a day, then worry. If not, meh. It doesn't even look a lot to me for a day's worth of shedding, let alone a week.

When was the last time you detangled your hair?

i detangle once a week... usually on a friday or saturday....

yesterday was my first time detangling in the shower under running water, so i guess thats why all the hair seemed more noticeable to me...

WHOA! Seriously?! 100 hairs? I would lose my mind if I saw 100 hairs a day! This is crazy I saw 12 today and I was freakin out and thinking about posting about it and in my head I thought maybe nonie will answer. I saved them because I wanted to get a magnifier to see if they had roots.
100 wow 100! I have been going nuts for nothing. Wait, Can you not lose enough is that bad in some opposite way? My recent texlax has made me super paranoid. Thank you for this post OP! Your hair is beautiful btw!

See that's exactly what I was worried about... I should have explained....it's not about losing hair if it's shedded hair, I know we all have to lose some... but I'm thinking it's breakage because I look and I don't see the white bulbs or whatever those thingys are called....
I know shedding is normal, but is a certain amount of breakage normal? Or is breakage considered bad completely?

I think some sort of breakage is inevitable, whether it be a tiny or longer piece of hair. But you do want to make sure that that is indeed what it is so you can nip the problem in the bud if need be, always check for the white bulbs! :giggle:

Yep; I check every piece of hair that comes out of my head (pretty much all shed hairs lately since I stepped up my S&D and protein/moisture balance games), and I don't trip on the shedding even though I shed like a collie (Holla, Bun Mistress!). I'm far more concerned about hair health these days, and so far so good on that front. So, OP, I would suggest that you examine your hair to determine how much is shed hair and how much is breakage.

I don't think you can not lose enough, or I should say, I have never heard anything to that effect. The hundred hairs a day is actually one of those things hair science teaches us:

Hair Growth Cycle

Hair on the scalp grows about .3 to .4 mm/day or about 6 inches per year. Unlike other mammals, human hair growth and shedding is random and not seasonal or cyclical. At any given time, a random number of hairs will be in one of three stages of growth and shedding: anagen, catagen, and telogen.

Anagen

Anagen is the active phase of the hair. The cells in the root of the hair are dividing rapidly. A new hair is formed and pushes the club hair (a hair that has stopped growing or is no longer in the anagen phase) up the follicle and eventually out.

During this phase the hair grows about 1 cm every 28 days. Scalp hair stays in this active phase of growth for two to six years.

Some people have difficulty growing their hair beyond a certain length because they have a short active phase of growth. On the other hand, people with very long hair have a long active phase of growth. The hair on the arms, legs, eyelashes, and eyebrows have a very short active growth phase of about 30 to 45 days, explaining why they are so much shorter than scalp hair.

Catagen

The catagen phase is a transitional stage and about 3% of all hairs are in this phase at any time. This phase lasts for about two to three weeks. Growth stops and the outer root sheath shrinks and attaches to the root of the hair. This is the formation of what is known as a club hair.

Telogen

Telogen is the resting phase and usually accounts for 6% to 8% of all hairs. This phase lasts for about 100 days for hairs on the scalp and longer for hairs on the eyebrow, eyelash, arm, and leg. During this phase, the hair follicle is completely at rest and the club hair is completely formed. Pulling out a hair in this phase will reveal a solid, hard, dry, white material at the root. About 25 to 100 telogen hairs are shed normally each day

How Your Hair Grows...

First and foremost, you must understand your hair growth cycle. A normal person's hair at any one time has around 100,000 hair follicles. In a normal scalp condition, 85% to 90% of your hair are in the ANAGEN phase. Around 5% percent of your hair will be in the CATAGEN phase and 10% in the TELOGEN phase.

During the ANAGEN phase, your hair will grow and stay healthy. It will look thick, nourished and grows around half an inch a month. This phase will usually last for 2 to 8 years. After that, you hair follicle will enter the CATAGEN phase. Now this is a very short transitional phase as it will usually last for 2 to 4 weeks. At this stage, your hair will shrink in size and disconnected from the blood supply. This is where a new hair follicle will start to grow from under the scalp.

Finally, the TELOGEN Phase. Your hair follicle will be in the resting phase, where there will be no growth at this phase as it is waiting for the new hair follicle to come out from under the scalp. This period will usually last for 3 months and then your hair follicle will fall out and replaced by a new one. During this phase, your hair follicle is weak and you can easily pull it out.

If you factor in that you have 100,000 hair follicles in your scalp and 10% of them are in the TELOGEN Phase while 1% of those hairs are in the last days of their phase, you will understand why it is normal to shed between 50 to 100 hairs a day.

it look fine to me & also like you mentioned detangling in the show you tend to see more b/c all the hair is collected by the drain.
