Is there always a risk of heat damage w/flat irons? Pls give tips!

There is always a risk with direct heat. No method is gauranteed against damage but you can minimise the risk by taking the right precautions.
It sounds like you are going about it the right way though, i'm not too good at using a flat iron but i'm sure some of the veterans will offer you great tips :D
 
OP, my suggestion is you do a search for all threads that talk about flatironing and take as many notes as you can. To get you started, I give links to some where I shared my method here.
