Is there a "Miss Jessies type" salon in Atlanta?

I plan to visit urbanbella in a few months after I reach a certain length past my big chop. They have a small feature in the September Essence mag, the one with Obama and his family on the cover. It sounds like a great shop and I love their hair typing system much better than the 3c 4a/b typing system we use here. There shop looks lovely from what I can see and I like the hair styling on the hair photo page.

Unlike Miss Jessie, I don't think they offer chemical services there. I believe they just work with natural hair, and hair education. I plan to go for a consultation.

I stopped by a couple years when I was coming out of my locs. I got a consult, but then I decided to wear my hair straight.

Kenesha is really nice and knowledgeable. It's a great spot!

Also, check out Oh My Nappy Hair! on Mitchell St. downtown. I used get my locs maintained there, and Erica does an excellent job with natural hair!

I received something called the "C" cut last year by Kristen James.

She actually used to be in the same location as Urbanbella--but then relocated so that Urbanbella could have the entire space.

The cut she did for me, can also be seen in my avatar.
I was VERY pleased with the shape she gave my natural/shrunken fro.

Here's the link to her website:

However, I have yet to try the stylists at Urbanbella. During the time I went to get the "C-cut"....Urbanbella had no stylists. I've heard nothing but positive reviews about them tho.... :-)

From the looks of your avi, I think we are hair twins  Thanks for this great information, I am going to file this in a special place because I am so excited about choosing and visiting one of these great salons that specialize in natural hair care. It's going to be my big personal Christmas treat to myself :yep:

ETA: I love the shape of your hair in your avi, I would definately rock that!

Haha! Love that salon name, it makes me want to run over there today! Thanks for the tips as well, these are all going into my files.. I like your products list...that Giovanni and the HSR are winners!

My sister had a horrible experience at Urbanbella. She had been transitioning for a while and had already cut off most of the relaxed ends. The stylist (a man) got scissor happy with her hair. She cried in the chair once she saw how much he had cut off. He did not communicate with her before hand on how much they were taking off. He also said, she would need to come in every 6 to 8 week for a trim (while she's crying in the chair)! Needless to say,she never went back there. I was so pissed at her for going there without me checking them out first. I referred her to Sharon and she's been going there at least a year now and is very pleased.

I have gone through a lot to get the hair that I have on my had having had alopecia... I will read the stylist the riot act before they put comb one in my hair, if they have a problem, Imma get ta steppin until I find someone I can work with.

Gurlll...Yes! I'm totally in love with HSR and Giovanni! Wow!

I swear that the Giovanni Direct is pretty much a twin to my dearly departed Aveda Elixir, especially after I added SAA to it!

Oh My Nappy Hair! has a really nice vibe and is really laid back (plus it's not too far from "SmyNings"! LOL...).. I'm funny about my hair. I have to have a totally positive environment whenever I get my hair done--but I'm just weird like that. They also kick a lot of positive, conscious (not hair-related) knowledge, too...I always learn a lot whenever I go there.

I am going to definately check them out when I get my hair done later this year...I'm just tryna grow a couple more inches so that the will have something to work with. @ SmyNings!! I also have to get some SAA's too, I keep hearing so many good things about it and some of the ladies add it to just about everything they put onto hair.

I simply can not forget the name of that salon, they sure named it right!!

no. Sharon is a member here and owns Salon Balisi.

I went to Kristen James new salon in Smyrna to check it out. Tas from Urbanbella worked there now. He's probably the guy who made the OP's sister cry. He seemed knowledgable enough. I recommended an acquintence that was transitioning as well to try the salon. She was told by Kristen and Tas that Kristen DIDN'T do African-American curly hair. And that Tas was the master stylist. That was strange to me because I've heard of other Black women going to her. My friend hated how he did her hair. I definitely won't be going to him. I was so confused. Does she or doesn't she do kinky, curly hair?

@ cclark1:
The last time I went to Kristen James was May of 2007. During that time, Keneesha--owner of Urbanbella--was kinda just getting things settled with her natural upscale salon. I actually contacted Keneesha before my appointment, to get her own recommendations on who could give my hair a nice shape up. DURING THAT TIME, she HERSELF, recommended Ms. Kristen James. At my appointment, the owner of Urbanbella (Kennesha), was there to offer me a consultation WHILE Kristen was doing my hair. She also told me that Kristen ALWAYS does her cuts as well.

So with all of that said...Kristen has definitely worked on African American/Kinky/Curly hair in the past. I read numerous reviews on her at NaturallyCurly's website....and saw that many of them had hair like mine. So I felt a little at ease in going to her. When I spoke to her, she even told me that she is used to working with hair that has a tight curl and confided that most are shocked that she is "white".
Which--actually I was not shocked....it didn't matter to me, as long as she had the skills!!!

Given the above mentioned, I'm thinking that since you say whoever this Tas person is and Kristen has teamed up---perhaps they have an agreement to where Tas works with tighter curls and Kristen works with looser curls. I'm not sure. But it most definitely wasn't set up that way before. Kristen used to work on ALLLLL textures.

It's a shame if she doesn't do her cutting methods anymore on tightly coiled hair! Because after hearing about this Tas guy from another poster...I don't think I want him to do my future cuts at all. :nono:

My take-away from all this is avoid dude Tas at all costs, because I don't want ya'll to be hearing about me on da news after I have the deal with him!
