IMO protein is bad when it is not followed up with moistier. As far as protein in the diet it wont hurt your hair but it can make you gain wieght if you do not workout.
Too much of anything in your diet can make you gain weight, it's a matter of calories consumed versus calories expended. Your body does NOT excrete any surplus fat, carbohydrates or for our discussion PROTEIN. If you consume too much (in calories), your body will convert it to fat,
YES, CONVERT IT TO FAT!! Protein is harder to convert but yes, it will change it to storable adipose tissue. Also, too much protein can be hard on your liver, especially if you're not drinking enough water to help with the flushing of the nitrogen from your system. Your best bet, as stated earlier, for health and cosmetic reasons is to consume a balanced diet (unless you are an athlete and must arrange your dietary needs for training/competition purposes).
As far as your hair is concerned, your body will utilize the protein you consume, for your hair AFTER it has satisifed any other requirements your body has for protein (hair and nails are low on the totem pole, so to speak).
My hair does rather well w/frequent protein treatments, as long as it's not Aphogee
