Is my hair as long as it will ever get?

I am getting worried. I have been taking care of my hair to such an extent that it has grown tremendously over the last six months. It appears pretty healthy and is about 3 or 4 inches past my shoulders or half way between brastrap and shoulders. I realise now that whenever I comb my hair or just anything hair is comig out, and a lot. Every day I am not really worried because my hair is still thick and it is from the roots, not breaking just shedding. I read that once hair reaches its maximum length (growth cycle) it will shed and be replaced. Have I reached my maximum length? Is this the end of teh cycle for these hairs? Can't my hair get any longer?

Please assure me that it isn't the end.

How long has it been since you've noticed any change in the length? How do you measure it?

Maybe it's just doing a little shedding because it's just that time of the season or something. Why are you worried that it may not grow any longer?

I say give it some more time and see what happens. Personally I don't believe what I read in most books. I'm only going to believe what I experience on my head

Man I the exact same thing is happening to me! I'm jus at bra strap and my hair came out ALOT when I washed it today! I wanna kno why!!! This is the 3rd post i've read where someone has this problem. My hair isn't breaking. it's shedding.

I used to think my hair had gotten to a certain length and wouldn't get past that length. But I just stopped watching it and even though I didn't notice, everyone else did. Finally, one day I realized that my hair had far surpassed what I ever thought. Just keep doing what you're doing and you will probably be surprised.

Still, I have the same problem, continuous shedding and not much improvement in growth.
The hairs that shed are the longest ones, which is a little disheartening.

I've also read that once your hair reaches it's determined length, it would shed more than usual and be replaced with new hairs.

This is very scary! Anyone have any tips on prolonging the anagen phase? At least, something to decrease the shedding (it's ALOT of hair). If our longest hairs we have keeping growing instead of shedding, than our overall hair length should increase too.

Does anyone have any tips on works for them when they had lots of shedding?

No insights

but I know that Foti, a chinese herb, is supposed to extend the growth phase of the hair.

Isn't MSM supposed to extend the growth phase too?I'm sure I read that somewhere.Does anyone know for sure?

I would like to know as well. Does MSM work to extend the growth (and therefore reduce the shedding)?

Thnks for the replies ladies. It is good to know I am not the only one going through this. This has not been happening a long time but I did read about the shedding once hair reaches that predetermined length thing.

Tracy, what is the name of that herb? Did someone mention MSM?

Well, the growth cycle for each hair is pretty long...also, how many times have you trimmed/cut it? That is lost length that you may not be accounting for. It takes years to reach a long length, and a lot can happen in that time. Don't give up hope just yet!

This may or may not be relevant to this thread:

I noticed that my new hairs grow a lot faster than my existing hairs. Before relaxing last weeek, I had relaxed in October 03. I went into braids about 1 month after. I noticed that the hairs that were outside the confines of the braid (new hair) were very long in comparison to the new growth that I received on my longest braids. The newgrowth on the new hair was about 50% or more longer than the old hairs.

So I came up with a theory that hair grows faster in the beginning of the anagen phase and gradually slows down until it stops in the catagen and finally sheds in the telogen phase.
