Some of you know that I've gone approximately six months without a relaxer until Monday when I received a fresh NEW one. I was astounded by the length that I received as well as the fact that I received no breakage from this extensive period of time while managing two distinct textures.

However, my friend told me that she really doesn't notice much of a difference between now and then. She INSISTED that I use heat (either the curling iron, or flat iron) because it had been 6 months, to achieve a straighter look, instead of the wavier pattern that I RECEIVED from AIR DRYING. Is this true? I've always thought applying a chemical was enough for straigtening the hair. I haven't used heat since September 2003, and didn't think it was necessary.

What do you ladies, think? Suggestions...comments...questions.....

Vanessa22, my hero! Congratulations on 6 months, and thanks for all the detangling tips you've given me in the past.

If you want a straighter look, rollersetting is the best way. I wouldn't subject my relaxed hair to a curling iron or flat iron because it's fine and already chemically compromised. It would freak out and break off.

Did you relax your own hair at home? Do you want a straighter look, or do you like the wave pattern you have now?

6 months? Good for you!

Hi Megon & GreatnessYeah it has been six months, but it was hard. Frequent conditioning treatments helped out so much. Also, during the winter months...the hat and scarf "hairstyle" came in handy.

But I think I'm going to choose not to add heat. I'm not all that anxious to have super straight hair anyways, plus with frequent conditioner washes it would be pointless.

My roommate relaxed my hair for me. She has nearly waist-length hair and I trusted her. I do like the wave pattern, so I think this'll be a keeper!

Vanessa - is your friend who is insisting on you using heat the same person as your roommate who relaxed your hair? Does your roommate use heat on her hair?

Isis - the two girls are different. The friend that insists that I use heat on my hair does not live with me, but my roommate, ironically uses the curling iron just about every day. I've NEVER even seen her do a deep conditioning treatment! Hmmm....go figure!

Thanks Hiza & DSD!!!!

I can't wait! HHG

I think Meagon is correct. I had a stylist suggest that I wear my hair straighter, maybe to train it or something. Anyway, my hair was 17" long when I went to see her, I'm now at about 15", but was as short as 12" after needing a big chop to even my hair and rid it of damage b/c of this terrible advice. I've learned enough here to avoid heat indefinitely, which is what I plan to do for the rest of my life!!!!
