Is it damaging to transition and press hair ?

Hi ladies..

I have been debating transitioning for the past 2 months. Right now I am about 9 weeks post relaxer. I really think that transitioning will help to solve my problem of having thin hair. I also want to get rid of all the chemicals.

I was planning on getting my hair pressed every four months. Will that cause my hair to shed or break?

Also, who uses the maxiglide while they are transitioning? Is this damaging to the relaxed ends? I was thinking of doing this once a month when I do not have a press and curl.

For the rest of the weeks I will probably do the baggie method and/or twist out (if I ever perfect my technique)

One last question.....is moisturizing the new growth the most important part of transitioning?

when i transitioned i had no intentions of wearing my hair natural. i wanted to keep wearing my hair straight i just didn't want a perm. so my hair dresser would press the roots i did that for about 3 months straight. i didn't notice any damage and i didn't have breakage like how i had it with the perm. i do think too much heat is bad though. thats why i stopped pressing my hair. you can try braids or a weave to grow it out. my friend is transitioning and wears her her in twistouts. and yes moisture is important whether your natural or not. HTH

I'm transitioning and I get my hair blown out by the dominicans about every 3 months. Just make sure they blowdry on medium heat (not unGODly hot). And whoever washes your hair should carefully detangle it to make it easier to blowdry. In between those times, I do braidouts weekly. To me, the keys are a K Cuttter comb (this will detangle even the nappiest most knotted up hair) and a good conditioner (I like Kenra).

If you protect your hair from the heat with heat protectants, you should be fine if you press your hair. I get my hair pressed every three weeks and I don't have any significant damage. I prefer the pressing comb rather than the dominican blowouts, because they just use too much heat. Then on top of that, they have to press the roots because they could only get everything else straight.
