I don't know what type of hair I am, but I dont' have the strength yet to show anyone this monstrosity. Either way I'd be dying to know if there was a chart out there to help you figure out what hair type you are.

i answered "both" for your poll...some folks are confused and some just want kudos...depends on the person:lachen:

imo hair typing is hard, confusing and why bother:ohwell:...the system Andre uses to me doesn't really make sense...i feel more comfortable explaining how my hair behaves than trying to fit into one of the types......pictures help me with the visual aspect and are another data point to find similarities...

i think people are really just looking for some type of similarity to describe traits in their hair so they can experiment and try things that might work for them

How come some women can spot a weave, a fake purse, and eye contacts from a mile away but when it comes to typing their own hair they are clueless?

So they come online, post really nice pictures of their hair and ask "What hair type am I?"

No, better yet, they go to every hair board on the internet posting the same pictures...

Hmmm...I'm just saying. Is it a ploy?

How do you feel when you see this?

I don't believe that it is a ploy, from personal experience I don't have a clue what my hair type is, but I'm quick to spot a weave. I believe I asked twice at the beginning of my natural hair journey because I thought that it mattered and that it would help me on my journey with my natural hair :wallbash: and i thought that it would help me find regimines or connect with ppl in the same hair type as me.. I've pretty much figured out my hair now so I've never asked or wondered about it again.

Im not quick to judge why others are asking because it can always be one or the other, some ppl are attention whores (wait can I say that?) and do so just to boost their self esteem or what have you but at the end of the day their reason is here nor there to me I can choose to respond or ignore their question whatever they get out of it doesnt effect me at the end of the day because I dont care :nono:

I didn't vote because I couldn't relate to any answer

There are some people that legitimately want to know what their hair type is. Some are frustrated when you say "one inch of new growth won't help" or if you tell them the truth. I have seen some people get REALLY mad over on naturallycurly when you tell them 4a instead of 2b. I even saw a woman on Youtube say that she thinks she has straight hair and in the meantime her new growth was 1/2 inch long LOL I tried to tell her, but she dismissed me. I was just thinking, well you'll find out when you shave your hair off!

Honestly the whole hair typing system is flawed. I say I'm 3C and sometimes I look at other pictures and I'm like, hey am I 3C? LOL It doesn't really matter because this was invented by some guy trying to sell a book. It definitely did help me find products though.

I can sooooo relate to that, (but I say I'm 4a)

ETA: I just freaked out for a sec  Because I knew that I didn't bump this thread up... I was on the first page. I know I wasn't going crazy.

Someone else must've voted on the poll. So... it wasn't me! :)

It's REALLY not that hard some people are combinations of types, but even for them its not hard to tell the combinations, 9.9 times outta ten I can identify what type someone is in about 30 seconds. The women who are genuinely difficult to identify are pretty rare in my extensive fotki stalking experience :curtain:....:giggle:

To me,its totally straightforward.

I think the issue or confusion takes place when people have a type that they have convinced themselves that they are and they refuse to accept anything different, then you mix in the fact that the culture on this board is that many seem to associate hair typing with one's level of blackness:huh: you can imagine the way a simple typing system gets convoluted......JMHO

That being said I think overall when people ask what their hair type is, they genuinely wanna know.

Hair typing is HARD

FACT

The typing system is mind boggling.

There is no room for negotiation. You're either 4 types with 2/3sub types.

It's militant

I agree with you to a certain extent. Some people have convinced themselves that are a hair type. I wouldn't dare tell someone they were a 4a when they are 100% convinced that they are a 3c

But I do think that this whole hair typing thing is wayyy too complicated. When I see ppl saying "I'm 3c, 4a, 4b, 4c, and possibly a hint a 2z!!!!" I'm just like "Really?" :look:

I suppose it's possible to have more than one hair type dispersed in your hair if countless people are claiming it. But when people are 3 types or more, that's when I begin to question the validity of the system altogether. People read into it so much that they begin to type themselves everything.

In my personal opinion, I think the system is flawed. There is a huge gap between 3c and 4a I believe needs to be closed first. I still don't know my true hair type, and quite frankly I'm done trying to figure it out :perplexed It's just confusing to me! Or maybe I'm just one of the slow ones lol

It might be a mixture of many things...a coming out of sorts and wanting to show your hair to the world. Especially after a big chop :)
Some really don't know since they haven't seen more than a half inch of their natural hair (new growth) for years.

I think the real question is...does it really matter, all this talk about hair types etc?
We can learn something from everyone, relaxed and natural, 1a to 4b... :yep:

I think this is the case for most relaxed folks. Great point!

Personally the varying Typing systems with its plethora of sub-sections confuses me and to be honest I find it unnecessary to some degree - I’m more than content with being type 4 something - although, the broader category descriptions (e.g Type 4) have helped me understand the characteristics of my hair.

Lastly not knowing my specific type in each section of my hair has in no way hindered me in obtaining healthier hair, growth, product choice (what works for one may not necessary work for another) and techniques which are the things that really matter to me in my hair journey.

I honestly didn't know anything about hair typing until I joined LHCF. Yes, I always heard that I had a "good" (so sorry ladies) grade of hair (whatever in sweet cornbread's name that means). But, I didn't know hair typing existed.

So, out of curiosity, I asked myself to learn.
