I have been using my coconut oil now for over a week and i realise that my hair is getting stronger but also that my hair is hard like when you use emergencee. Has anybody else had this? I didnt think that it was protein or at least that high a content.
Any info on this??

Thanks
Uzz

Also, My hair never gets hard with Coconut oil. It actually feels softer. Coconut oil does not seems to give me the oily feeling though. I just use it for softness but it does not seem to satisfy me for sealing my ends. I have to use a butter like hemp seed for that.

Coconut oil dries my hair out, too. Maybe it's so good at sealing in moisture, that it locks out moisture pretty damn good, as well.

Thanks you guys, On dry hair it makes my hair soft but when its wet i can hardly get a comb thru it.
Thanks

I don't know what the deal is with coconut oil, but I get that too on wet hair. Maybe it has something to do with the way coconut oil responds to temperature? You know how its relatively solid/mildly liquidy at room temp, totally liquid at higher temps, and a basically a rock in cold temps. Maybe our cold, wet hair brings out its solid-like nature resulting in that hard, tangly feel? I've even heard it completely solidifying in the hair after going outside on people who live in colder climates. :ohwell:

Hey sistaslick
That could be it, Im sure you are on to something there i couldnt help but cringe at the thought of someone walking around with solidified coconut oil in their hair lol.
Thanks for responding

i had to quick coconut oil. In th winter it would harden in my hair. In the summer time, it made my wet hair moist and detangled well, but on dry hair it was oily, limp and just overall funky. I think olive oil or sesame oil or almond may be better alternatives. Now I am using Essential Fatty Acids Oil COncentrate.

Ive never tried almond oil but dont really like olive oil in my hair, ive never heard of...well ive heard of EFA concentrate on here but never seen it. I think I'll have a look in the health store this week
Thanks

Same here.
I use coconut oil when my hair is wet and when its dry, I havent experienced any hardness or dryness. It makes my hair softer if anything,. I use it as sealant, hot oil treatment, and for added shine. I  it.

Hey Ambrosia
How do you use it as a hot oil treatment, ive never thought of doing that.

Coconut oil feels good on wet or dry hair for me:) I did some research and discovered that it penetrates the hair extremely well, along with jojoba oil. On The Long Hair Community it is extremely popular with the 3 and 4 ft of hair ladies:p

I like that it's inexpensive and can be found at WallyWorld or the grocery store!

It works well when you use a tiny amount. Like less than 1/2 teaspoon.
So it could be that im using too much?
hhmmm i guess when its wet you cant tell that you have used too much and when its dry you notice the difference very easily

thanks

I have just used coconut oil for the first time like two days ago and it has made my hair soft so far but I used it pre-poo and also added some afterwards. I have done some research online and it is very popular with Asian women, especially Indian women but they warm it and soak their hair in it or massage their scalp with it before washing so maybe that's they key. They also mix it with other things. It is supposed to stimulate growth when it is massaged into the scalp. It has anti-fungal and anti-viral properties so eating it or using it topically is supposed to help minimize yeast and other fungi as well as bacteria. I also read that it is supposed to help damaged hair by restoring it's protein structure. It's not a protein but it helps strengthen hair somehow.

If coconut oil is available in WalMart or Walgreens what section could I find it?
It is in the same section as other cooking oils. Wal-mart carries the Louanne brand and I'm not sure about Walgreens. They usually have it at health food stores as well.

correct. coconut oil has an affinity for hair proteins. it made my relaxed hair very soft but also brittle because i was protein sensitive, so that may be the key.

ITA with this. When it was warm, my hair felt soft w/ coconut oil. When it got colder, I stopped using it b/c it made my hair feel hard and a little tangly by the end of the day. I think it's the temp. I plan to revisit coconut oil w/ braidouts this summer.

I have my niece in Houston using coconut oil & since it is usually warmer, she hasn't had this issue.

well coconut oil makes my hair feel amazing. in the sumer its silky soft and even now in the colder weather my hair stays soft. of course when im outside it sticks together because it gets solid but once i enter the car or building its not an issue.

A Coconut is a fruit and a seed. It is the fruit of the coconut tree, but it's also the seed of the coconut itself. Fruit are not protein and cannot act as a protein. But because coconut oil is penetrating and moisturizing, it can strengthen your hair by making it more elastic and harder to break.

This thread is SO old...but I think that in the winter it is best to use fractionated coconut oil because it remains liquid and it much lighter. Coconut oil prevents protein loss in hair...but it is not a protein in and of itself. Here is a snippet from Tropical Traditions website.

The findings clearly indicate the strong impact that coconut oil application has to hair as compared to application of both sunflower and mineral oils. Among three oils, coconut oil was the only oil found to reduce the protein loss remarkably for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product. Both sunflower and mineral oils do not help at all in reducing the protein loss from hair. This difference in results could arise from the composition of each of these oils. Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft. Mineral oil, being a hydrocarbon, has no affinity for proteins and therefore is not able to penetrate and yield better results. In the case of sunflower oil, although it is a triglyceride of linoleic acid, because of its bulky structure due to the presence of double bonds, it does not penetrate the fiber, consequently resulting in no favorable impact on protein loss. (Rele AS, Mohile RB. "Effect of mineral oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil on prevention of hair damage." Journal Cosmetology Science 2003 Mar-Apr;54(2):175-92.)

The only way I can use coconut oil is in an prepoo oil rinse, blended with other oils or Vatika Oil (for some reason, it makes my hair super soft when regular virgin coconut oil makes it hard as a rock).

I used the regular coconut oil as a overnight conditioning-prepoo. I use fractionated as a moisturizer/sealer...never had hard hair. But I also condition with a protein free condition 3+ times a week (co-washing)...

One of my most recent videos was about oil steaming with coconut oil and how it should be used on wet hair to avoid that hard, straw feeling.

See video HERE.

where can you buy fractionated coconut oil from? I have a tub of extra virgin but I hate having to try to scrape it out.

Well, I'v tried coconut oil all kinds of ways pre-poo, sealing, HOTs in DCs...both on dry and wet hair. I've tried fractionated and extra virgin. Hard hair every time. I think it just has a strengthening effect on my hair.
