I have a question that a friend wants me to ask you all. Her hair seems to be growing inwardly. Some AA men get this when they shave, what is this condition called and has anyone on this site had it and if so how did you treat it?

I suggested that she see a trichologist, but she didn't seem to like that idea.

I need help with this too. I have so many ingrown hairs on my calves. I usually tweeze them out, but that leaves scars. Any suggestions for dealing with this? I have really light skin with dark hair, and the ingrown hairs look a mess! Not to mention the scars. I never wear shorts because of it. Maybe I should start getting them waxed? (That sounds really painful!)

Ingrown hairs that come from shaving are a result of the direction in which you shave. The closer the shave - like from multi-blade razors - the more likely you are to get them if it is a problem. The end of the hair curls under the skin as it is growing out.

I used to get them all of the time, but started exfoliating - it works great. No more in grown hairs and smoother skin on my legs and arms. I also got them on my face from tweezing - now I thread and exfoliate - no problem.

Good luck.

I remember getting horrible infected ones on the back of my neck whenever the stylist used to always shape up my kitchen. Horrible experience for a 14 year old. Anyway, we treated them by soaking the area with a steaming hot towel, removing the ingrown hair with a needle.

Exfoliating sounds like an excellent idea as well, the idea is to get the top layer of the skin really soft and thin so those hairs can escape from being trapped underneath.

I get these quite often in my underarms if I shave, so I have taken to using Nair instead and that seems to be working. I also exfoliate regularly.
