Hey everyone,
I am new here, (hence no photo) but are there any chemicals that wreck havoc on black hair or hair in general? What should we watch out for?

There's a Health vs Hair thread that I saw today on here which has a list of ingredients and what effect they have

Funny story,
So right now i'm trying to undo the damage i did by trying out this shampoo that made my hair brittle and hair ( a first in a loooong time) and as am i reading online what ingredients to look out for, i come accross the word lanolin. HA! The product i was using to moisturize had lanolin in it. i was using ORS Olive Oil, was i wrong? No lanolin, people?

To be honest, I think it depends on your hair. Some people can use lanolin (as you mentioned), 'cones, mineral, petroletum, Crisco, etc., and it does nothing to harm their hair. In fact, those ingredients may even enhance their hair's health and appearance. Others almost run away from those same ingredients, because these simply don't agree with these individuals' hair. That is why I would hesitate to say "Never use xyz," unless that ingredient is a proven carcinogen in the amounts that we use on our hair.

I can't use lanolin either.

Or Mineral Oil

Or Petroleum.

Or cones.

You know what really gets me -- Stearkonium Chloride. It will dry my hair out after a while.

It's weird, I bought a small tube of salon quality deep moisturizing treatment, deep conditioned under a heat cap, and as I washed it out my hair felt great. It was so smooth, succulent and silky.

But that night and next dry -- DRY. Weird! I thought I just had a DEEP MOISTURIZING treatment? Then I looked up all the ingredients and found stearkonium chloride was drying. I threw out all products with that in it.

I dont' even use the Mega Tek anymore because it's either the second or third ingredient. All this time I thought the keratin protein in Mega Tek was drying me out. Uh-uh. It was the sterkonium chloride. :(.

My other kerain protein products don't leave my hair that dry.
