Indian/African/Arabian Haircare Methods?

Does anyone know anything about these? I have seen some postings on henna, neem, amla, shikakai, etc., but I really would like to know if anyone can give me some books or websites that can help me learn more about Eastern beauty techniques.

It's funny because I have unprocessed 4a hair, and lately I have been getting the best tips from type 1 and 2 people. I'm really loving it, but all my information comes in bits and pieces. I'd like something more comprehensive. Any help is appreciated. Also, if anyone has any experinces they would like to share please do. I love hearing from other folks.

Use shikakai as a natural hair wash to control dandruff or for sensitive scalp. Shikakai is said to promote hair growth and strengthen hair roots. For best results, take 1 tablespoon each: shikakai powder, amla powder and aritha powder and add them to 1 cup boiling water. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes. If desired, you can add 1 teaspoon of neem powder to this mixture if you have dandruff or scalp problems. You can also add 1 teaspoon of liquid castille soap to this if you have very oily hair. Once cooled, use this mixture to wash hair. Rinse well with warm water.

I got this via email from someone at http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com. I have a sensitive scalp and they recommended the above mixture. I'm not sure if it works though, I got it in my eyes and they burned so bad /images/graemlins/cry3.gif that I poured it out. So if you use it be careful! I am going to try again soon.

Lala, you are not kidding about the powder in your eyes. That happened to me once and now I will only use the powders while hanging my head into the tub. That way the mixture doesn't have to pass over my face in order to be removed from my hair.

I have also had good luck with Dauber's Vatika Oil. It works well on my winter scalp. I oil my head the night before I wash it. I get it from an online Indian store.

lala just accidentally put the period at the end of her sentence, which showed up in her URL, but everything else is fine.

The oils work pretty well. I usually use the coconut, shikaki, alma, and brahmi oil for my preshampoo treatment.

But there is this hair oil that they have and they say that it has a cooling effect like essential oils have and they also say it makes the hair grow its called Bhringaraj Oil. I found a website that carries it because ive been to alot of the indian stores and they dont have it. So here is the website if anyone is interested http://secure-shopping-cart.com/niam/cart/cart121.html I even saw this in black hair care magazine a year ago. Some famous hair stylist was talking about it. So it must be good.

Yes, Bhringaraj (Eclipta alba) is popular ayurvedic oil. There are lots of oils like these that promote hair growth.

Ayurveda is awesome. Vadik Herbs is a good place to get basic ayurvedic based beauty products too. I still can't get over how much the Better Botanicals helped my skin. I break out a lot due to stress from school and I have had 1 pimple since I started using it a few weeks ago.

A lot of the products I use smell very good and are relaxing to use. I like to massage my Vatika oil into my hair and scalp the night before I wash with the shikakai. I used to think that my hair didn't like oils, but I think it just doesn't like synthetic oils. Most good Eastern haircare porducts don't add dyes or perfumes, which is nice.

Oops! Sorry about that. I used the herbs to wash my hair yesterday and my hair was as hard as a rock. I had to apply 3 different conditioners to bring it back. Did I do something wrong?

What procedure did you use to apply the herbs? What herbs did you use?

I used a tbsp. of shikakai, amla, aritha and neem powders in a quart of hot water steeped for 10 minutes and strained through a filter.

Hmm. That sounds about right. I'm not sure why it didn't work for you. Do you have a relaxer? How long did you rinse?

I find that when I use herbs, I have to rinse my hair for a longer period of time, or my hair will be stiff.

I do have a relaxer. I used Affirm mild, its been about 7 wks. since last retouch. I assumed that I had rinsed adequately. My hair is thick so I usually let the water run over my hair for several minutes. Stiff does not describe my hair after using the herbs /images/graemlins/frown.gif. I had to use 3 different conditioners to bring it back. It took me all day to do my hair. I had purchased the herbs looking for other ways to cleanse my scalp. I got seborrhea from a bad color job at a salon 9 months ago. It’s better but I’m trying to keep it in check. I emailed From Nature With Love and they recommended that I add jojoba oil to the mix and use a tsp. of just the shikakai by itself to see how it works. I'll give it another try tomorrow...

That was a good idea to write the company. Now that I think about it, I oil my hair the night before I wash, so maybe that has a lot to do with it.

Let us know how it turns out.

No, I chickened out! I am at wk. 8 of my relaxer and my hair is starting to puff up and tangle. I was thinking about trying it this weekend after I finish finals. I'm going to try the shikakai by itself mixed w/oil, what do you think?

Aww. Girl, go ahread and do the thing.

Try oil on your head the night before, or even a few hours before the powder wash.
