I'm thinking braidouts for the winter

Hi, Ladies! I tried using half-wigs to get me through the winter months. Lately, I keep having an itch at my nape and I think the wig is rubbing me bald back there--I'm seeing slight, bald patches. I have been wearing them pretty consistently since the beginning of '08. Don't get me wrong, I know how to wear my half wigs: plastic cap over my hair, silk scull cap over that, never use back combs, rub castor oil/shea butter/vaseline over front combs, and no hair left out (I wet bun and use a headband to cover the the wig part). I hate to give up my wigs. They're like wearing a baseball cap only cuter:)

I'm have to nurse my nape back to health. I was just coming out of that beedeebee stage, but the half-wigs pulled me back in :( I spray that area w/ 14n1, seal it with either one of the aforementioned sealants, and braid.

I'm not a big heat user; I flat iron every 3-4 months so, I'm going back to my tried-and-true: BRAIDOUTS! That's right! I'll be wearing this style through the winter and hopefully I can return to my half-wigs (I DO SOOO LOVE THEM!).

Any tips for wearing this style through the winter? I wore them during the winter about two years ago and I don't remember any major setbacks. Let me know what you think, in case I catch amnesia and forget how to care for my hair being out.

I guess the type of setback would depend on the climate that you live in. I'm in Ohio so we have pretty harsh winters. I would be afraid to consistently wear my hair out for fear of dry ends.

We'll I'm rocking scarves underneath knit caps, so that is not even an option. :look:

i'm doing braidouts this winter to curb my low heat regimen. its been fine so far. I just wash and braid my hair earlier in the day. And if its still damp my morning...I throw on a satin bonnet...and then a slouchy beenie hat or something...til i get to work

This is pretty much what I've been doing for close to a month and loving it :yep: I'm real lazy with it though and only do 2 braids but I love my hair! I've also started using Curly Nikki's twist n cirl method and I think I like that even better than the braidouts! This last time, I wore that style for 3 days and couldve gone longer but I was anxious to henna. Check out heer blog for the video tutorial. Curlynikki.com

ETA: I'm in MI and our winters are no joke but surprisingly, the humidity is still fairly high most days but even when it isn't, if I properly moisturize my hair-especially the ends- I'm good to go. Do what feels good to you and your hair!

Same here:yep:...im trying to do a 6mth stretch to my anniv. date (March 09)....this is the only thing that seems to work for me...but i braid my hair first then wet it in the shower...after drying, unbraid it:drunk:

Thanks Ladies! It's good to know that I'm not alone. Women seem so fascinated with this simple hairstyle! When I tell them that I just braid 5 cornrows and roll the ends w/ perm rods, they act as if I'm speaking Greek.

Well, good luck to us all and as always: KEEP THOSE ENDS MOISTURIZED!

P.S. I was up late last night and read that Crisco is good for keeping ends moisturized. I'm gonna pick up some today for a fresh braidout. What could it hurt? Ends only, though.

I used to do braidouts but now I am all about the bantu knotout. I think the concerns are the same for both methods. Be sure to put something substantial on your ends before you braid it. If I would you I would tuck my braidout into a silk/satin lined roomy hat whenever I was going out.

That way you dodge the frosty weather bullet by keeping your hair protected when outside but you still have your style that does not require heat or walking outside in cold weather with wet hair.

I try to use a leave in and then something thicker on the ends like castor oil. I also deep condition 2-3 times a week when the weather turns cold.

Go for it! I'm doing mainly braidouts for the winter as well...with co-washing daily to retain the moisture. I'll pay close attention to my ends.

Thanks for posting this! I checked out the video and will try this . Im wearing a braid out now and LOVE it but it never hurts to have other stlyes due to it being soooo cold her in Chicago :spinning:

Well, I didn't make it to the store tonight to pick up the Crisco for my ends. That's OK 'cause I have enough sealants around here. Anywhoo, I have been wearing the same braidout for 3 days and going for a 4th! This is unprecedented for me. I used to rebraid everynight! I can't remember who posted the tip, but I gather my hair into a high ponytail on top of my head and throw a bonnet on it. In the morning, I shake my hair out and go. Sometimes, I use a small curling iron, to create ringlets in the front but everywhere else, my hair is on point.

I can make it through the winter if my hair keeps performing this way! I see people staring at me. My hair is full and it looks as though my hair has always been this way. I think it's the sexiest hairstyle on me!
