I'm thinking about a BC..

I don't even know what to say. I washed my hair today and it was really tangled. I'm annoyed with it and I shed a LOT of hair (this time). I'm thinking about cutting it even shorter than my first BC and doing the scarf method all over again until I'm comfortable with the length.

It will help me, for now, cut down on time for doing my hair and not being bothered with it... then again, being a straight natural does too.

I either need a new way of washing without having tangles & shedding.. or cut it and not have to worry about it.

I guess I'm confused.

are you washing in sections?

Have you tried oil rinsing?

why dont you try getting a trim first?

Don't cut it yet! Napp made some good suggestions. Also have you tried just putting it away under a wig or a weave?

How do you usually wash your hair Auburn? This might be the biggest issue you need to resolve in order to cut down on the tangles.

I'm with Napp on oil rinses. They've been a huge help in "melting" my tangles big time. I have incredibly dense, thick 4b hair and tangles are not a huge headache for me anymore..i used to dread wash days but with my TT, oil rinsing and washing in sections i'm mostly headache free these days :)

I don't know about a BC, i'd hate to see you lose that beautiful head of hair:nono:

one more thing to add, i've been using heat to stretch my hair (blow drying only) and it seems the more I do it (about 1x a week or bi-weekly on medium heat) the easier/shorter my detangling sessions.

I know heat is usually frowned upon here:lol: but i've found it to be great help for me :)

I wash my hair in halves.

I haven't oil rinsed but I did prepoo overnight with coconut oil.

well i suggest definitely start washing in quarters! its not that much more work and the hair tangles less.:yep:

also try oil rinsing and/or get a blunt cut before hacking it all off.

This time I prepoo'd with coconut oil, wet all my hair, put conditioner on the length to help the tangles.. shampooed the scalp, washed out everything, added conditioner to each half then tried to detangle as usual.

My hair said no. I want to say *** you.. I will cut your arse.

I might have to read the oil rinsing thing. Could you tell me about it?

If its long enough, I'll just donate it.

I have my hair prepped for flat ironing tomorrow. I hope that when I wash it, it is easier to handle. I have to find some sort of new method.

I thought of maybe getting some sort of bob.. then I was like "Screw it, I might as well start fresh and baby the living **** out of my hair like I should have the first time".

  1. Rinse (or shampoo) your hair
  2. Coat in your favorite oil (I've used olive, jojoba, castor, meadowfoam, dabur alma, and aphogee EFA oil, red palm oil/butter--- my favorite is an amla, castor mix)
  3. Rinse with warm/hot water
  4. Apply conditioner
  5. Rinse with cool/cold water
  6. Apply leave-in
  7. Seal
I can do steps 1-5 on prep days. I will try it the next time I get a chance.

OP wash in braids. I started washing my hair in braids when it was just 3 inches long and cannot imagine how anyone with kinky hair can wash hair loose, even in fractions the whole idea just boggles the mind. And I'm not talking about when I wash my hair in the twists/extensions braids it's been living in. I'm talking about how if I've been wearing my hair out, that I will put it in braids before I wet it. I just undo comb through each one then rebraid it during every stage of the wash using the slip from shampoo, conditioner, running water...to help the comb glide through.

Here's an example of the way it looks before I wet it (my hair was straightened here):

And as you can see, the braids are still there at the end of the wash and I leave them in till it fully dries (this pics shows the shrinkage of the braids after the wash--I only undid one to show full reversion after the press otherwise I rebraided and let my hair dry in the braids):

And this is a different time when I as washing my bangs loose and shows an example of how my hair looks once it dries in braids, stretched and free of tangles:

OMFG.. I forgot to mention that by the time I'm washing out the last conditioner, the water is getting cold. Maybe there is a filter that needs to be checked or something but it pisses me off EVERY TIME aside for man handling this disobedient hair..

Thank you for the method & explanation. Maybe I can combine oil rinsing with this?

LMAO, you need a bigger water heater/tank. Or perhaps you could wash your hair in sections. Wash apply conditioner then go do something while you wait for the heater to heat up the water so you have enough for your long wash.

It happens to me sometimes if I spend too much time showering while also trying to wash my hair.

I really want a tankless water heater thing but thats a big investment. I know I can take it with me when I move thought and I will be saving on bills. I just cant do that right now.

I think I see what you mean. Do as usual but when I get to the conditioner, let it sit in while the water reheats? I'll see to that too.

auburn here is what i think you can try:

on straightened hair divide the hair into 4.

oil, remove shed hair and loosley braid up

in the shower get the hair wet and cleanse the hair in the braid. squeeze it to get the cleanser through. (an alternative would be to wet the hair outside of the shower along with cleanser that way you can get a head start and not have to waste precious hot water.) rinse well

then unbraid each one, apply conditioner, detangle and rebraid.

then rinse squeezing each braid to get as much conditioner out.

I need more convincing. I think the only thing holding me back is the fact that I look funny with short hair. I know my SO wont like my short hair. IDK if I can get an internship with my hair scarfed up (but neatly). I could be wrong.

All I know is that I'm sick of this **** on my head.

This sounds good too. Maybe I can air dry in braids too. The only reason why banding > braids for me is because banding straightens my roots more when drying. We shall see.

well i dont know what to say...i find the first wash after a press is the easiest. i I just divinde it in 4, spray on my protien treatment and tangles dont even form in the first place.then i rinse, condition(if i feel like it) and get to styling. it when i try to be cute and wash it all at once i run into issues.....

Yeah, I'll point and laugh.

You made that bed, you've gotta lie on it. Your hair all matted coz you screwed up. You were lazy and didn't listen to your hair and do what it needed. You tried to wash it like you were dealing with doll hair. So now fix the mess and stop being a quitter. Yeah, I'm being harsh but it's coz I'll be pissed if you cut that hair when that is not your only option. Stop being lazy and get to work if your hair is still tangled! Work on a small section at a time and braid it up once you detangle it so you can work on another section w/o that one going back to square one. Use oil, conditioners, fingers, whatever! Get ideas from people and commit to fixing this. Work on a small section at a time and work slowly and carefully. Stop when you get tired. Braid it up and put on a baggy and a scarf to let it marinate a bit more and continue again when you aren't impatient and cranky. Auburn, I'm a be on your SO's side if you cut that hair. :bat:

If your hair is no longer tangled and you're just venting, trust that it won't happen again if you try one of the suggestions in this thread. And stop talking about cutting your hair coz the nightmare is over. It'll be OK.

oh and also have you tried rollersetting? i really find it easy to braid the roots(like 4-5 stitches) and roll the hair. they way my roots get straight and since there is not alot of stitches it loosens while you roll, but keeps the hair together. so when you take it out it is just a light wave at the top from the braid out. i hope that made sense. if you have short hair around the edges you can use a trouser sock to push the hairs back and then roll. when you take it off everything will be very straight.

That's the thing, I didn't wash it this time after straightening it. I did the twist out thing then wore it natural. I agree, it is easier right after though.

oh i totally understand:yep: i had a "moment" like this a few weeks ago:look:

I do the exact same thing, and I am so thankful for discovering this method because I used to utterly dread washing and dealing with all of the tangles. Now detangling takes me 15 minutes and washing my hair is relaxing again:yep: I can't imagine ever going back to shampooing my loose hair!:nono:

Next time after the twist out, apply oil or conditioner and baggy and then detangle section by section, removing dead hair and then braiding it up, and then that's when you wash it.

Incidentally, I had to detangle my hair in 2008 because I sorta did what you did. Well, I didn't wash it, but I went to bed w/o braiding my hair after a twist-out. I had a matted rat's nest:

It took conditioner and patience:

to fully detangle it:

And it was well worth the time invested because I saved my hair, but I also learned a lesson: I will never do that again--so I understand the headache of dealing w/ tangled hair.
