I recently realized that I hadn't had the pleasure of thanking or introducing myself to all the LHCF ladies. I know it's a bit overdue, as this is officially my 200th post, but better late than never, right?
So, first off - Thanks!
I came across LHCF in April and lurked on the hair boards for a while and then decided to register. A fitness challenge in the Health & Fitness forum was actually the straw that broke the camel's back in persuading me to fork over $6.50. However, leading up to that I was in awe of how supportive you ladies are of one another. Whenever I see comments like "That's LHCF for you", I think "These ladies don't give themselves enough credit!". This forum is so inspirational not only bc of the lengths to which you ladies grow your hair but more so bc of the lengths to which you go to support others and inform yourselves. Having visited other hair forums, I was also taken aback by how naturals and relaxed heads seem to coexist so peacefully here - a veritable hairtopia! From reading the hair forums, I obviously knew how on point you ladies were with all things hair, but once I registered a whole new bevy of topics that LHCF ladies were knowledgeable and passionate about opened up to me. And you guys are quite hilarious, to boot. I could go on more, but what I really want to say is...
About Me-
I've been relaxed since I was 12 or 13, which is about 10 years now. My hair was its longest when I was natural, but went downhill while relaxing, especially the past 3 years. Although I'm naturally a very inquisitive person with a voracious appetite for information, I had blindly accepted many misconceptions about my hair. I knew very little about hair and hadn't been taking care of my hair at all. I would only wrap/cover it at night for about a week or so after it was freshly done. I was very dependent on my local dominican salon, but started doing my own wash/roller sets when I moved. I didn't know how to wash my hair properly and would rarely moisturize my hair or scalp bc I thought it would get in the way of that "swang"ETA: Not only was I negligent with my hair, I was abusive. If my hair was a child, someone would've called BCW/ACS on me! I was blow drying at least every other week and curling/flat ironing almost every day!. I knew my hair was growing at the roots and was very frustrated by my inability to retain length and thickness. I remembered hearing that afro-textured hair was naturally dry and decided to look for a moisturizing product - that's where my journey began.
After visiting several product-oriented websites, I stumbled upon one by the name of Treasured Locks. I happened to click on the section of the site that explained the structure and needs of afro hair. Through reading this info and doing some more research in the ensuing hours, I came to a conclusion that I never thought I would reach - "Maybe my natural hair is manageable". From there, I decided to stop getting relaxers, put away the blow dyer, curling iron and flat iron, became a DIYer and consumed as much info as I could from natural blogs, forums, and websites.
A couple of weeks later, I came across LHCF - . You guys had me ready to kick transitioning to the curb real quick! So many gorgeous heads of 4b relaxed hair! After much ogling, I decided to stick with my transition. I think I owe it to myself to spend at least a year or two with my natural hair and then I'll take it from there. For now, I'm co-washing 2x/week, DCing 1-2x/week, shampooing as needed and doing flat twist outs. Recently, I started applying castor oil to my temples since they're thinning from my frequent work-out buns. I'm also thinking about getting a half-wig as a protective style. I've gradually cut 3-5 inches from my hair and plan on continuing to trim as I transition over the next year or so. I can't wait for the day when I no longer have these bone straight relaxed ends clinging to my natural hair for dear life!
Once again, many thanks to LHCF! Your hair and your spirits are truly beautiful!
