I\'m new

Hello every1. I am keke. I foudn out bout this site from some folx on blackvoices. Anyway, i am having hair problems too. For about the past 2-3 months i have worn a scarf and hat style. Went to the salon every 6 weeks to have my hair permed and trimmed, so i've been keepin up to date(actually w/that since August). But w/that scarf style i have had NO growth since my last perming. I dont know if its the scarf or the perm. My stylist uses Revlon and i wear a 100% Rayon scarf. I have now put the scarf away for a while to see if maybe that is a reason my hair is not growing, breaking and thin and uneven at the ends. I dont use much heat at all, i stopped rolling my hair up since late last year. I wrapped my hair each night and then combed down the front for bangs and put on the scarf and hat. Sometimes i would have my hair up in a lil updo and clip it up in the back. I am now takin supplements cause for some reason i CANNOT get growth. Sucks. :^P

Hi Keke and WELCOME!

You've come to the right place. I would suggest you look through ALL the post from the end to the beginning. There is a lot of useful information, from vitamins, regimines, mistakes, your hair type, you name it.

Can you explain this "scarf style"? Is this a hairstyle that requires a scarf?

welcome to the board keke

so we can help u cud u plz answer a few question??
what supplements areu taking and what dosages??
does yo stylists condition yo hair properly and do u keep an eye on her to see jus how much she is cutting off because a few ladies have quite some hair raising stories about hair dressers so even tho u are up to date with going to her, it may be the stylist thats causing this much breakage, does she overlap the relaxer on previously relaxed hair and also does she apply anything to the previosly relaxed hair to stop it being over-treated??

another limiting factor cud be stress, have u been under any unsual stress lately that may be causing the hair growth to stop?? how about healthwise??

the breakage cud also be due to the hat and scalf that u r wearing because if the hat isnt linned with satin or silk breakage is sure to occur because every other material either snags the hair or seeps all the moisture out of it.

what kind of hair products areu using becase alcohols dry out hair and cause hair breakage.

u may also want to list yo styling products so we cud be better able to pin-point the exact culprit thats causing yo hair breakage

Re: I\'m new

Ok i use to wear the scarf everyday. I went w/o the scarf for maybe 5 days or less outta that time of wearing it. But mostly everyday. Reason i was wearing it was cause i thought it was good to do as less touching or messing w/your hair as possible so i thought i was gonna get much growth by doin that. Guess im not. About my hairdresser u guys may be right im thinkin that maybe she's giving me the wrong kind of perm or putting it on wrong or something cause REvlon is not good w/me. I'm gonna tell her to try something else. I am now using Motions neutralizing shampoo and after shampoo conditioner. I also have the motions lotion and also some motions hairspray. Now before i began using this i was doin alot of switching which is probably another thing thats causing my hair damage, i guess. I used Breakthru(shamp. condit. and lotion) I used alot of olive oil in my hair like twice a day(sometimes too much. drippin from my head) i had used Hawaiian Silky shampoo and at a time i used some anti-dandruff shampoo and i had also used some(yeeah i no this is alot)Doo grow. This is NOT all at one time. no, no. I would change it bout each time i'd wash my hair cause i wasn't sure on which way to go, plus as u can tell im NOT very consistent. lol. But im tryin now to do that. Pills im takin now are from GNC. Women's GNC Super Biotin 600 and Women's Hair, Skin, Nails multiple vitamin supplements. The hair, skin, nails is working fine except for my hair. Biotin i just now got so still waitin 4 results.

Re: I\'m new

Also, my brushes and combs consisted of wide tooth combs and brushes w/rough bristles that would hold the hair back in place. But i now realize those aren't very good. Tear my hair. So now i have a boar bristle brush and i still use the wide tooth combs i try not to use the tiny toothed combs alot though. Before i wash my hair i put olive oil in it and i get a hot towel dampen it and put it on my head till it cools. Then shampoo, and condition(if i got time i will let the condition sit on my hair for 5-15 or so minutes) wash it out, hair is soft :^D, then i blow dry it and use a brush to help smooth the hair down some. Its not real straight but its decent. lol. Then i press my hair and style how i want. thats about it. Ok. What am i doing horridly wrong? lol.

girl give them time to work!!

, seriusly tho, do u have a conditioning shampoo?? coz u may need to start there, my hair was breaking because of dryness coz i used to use just any shampoo and hardly moisturiseed it, so after using the moisturising shampoo (like creme of nature), do a deep conditioning treatment (eg ors mayonaaise or d&l cholesterol), and also ALWAYS use a leave in conditioner mayonanaise, coz they allow hair to get stronger and be protected (eg infusium 23 leave in) then try air drying yo hair, tips can be found by searching the board, try sleeping in a satin scalf or bonnet coz a lot of breakage occurs wen we sleep coz the hair catches on the pillowcases and also moisture is seeped out by them, same reason hats shud be lined with satin/silk and cotton bandanas shud really be avoided

wen styling everyday u cud use s-curl (in moderation) or maybe some qp mango butter which has been causing a commotion lately
grin.gif

it may not be a good idea to jus switch yo relaxer tho, because i understand that u may no tlik ewhat she is doing but if u do a search, u'll see some of the relaxers the ladies on the board are using because yo stylists may be the root of all evil
wink.gif
u cud also think about switching from a no-lye to a lye relaxer coz lys are more gentler on hair which cud be another reason that yo hair is breaking.....how do u wear yo hair on a daily basis?? have u tried protective styles?? kinda like the idea u had of keeping yo hair outa the way but by making sure that the ends were always outa harms way, tucked inside and moisturised

sorry for the long post

u cud try and heat the oil itself so that its even more effective once u apply it to yo hair, and mayb sit under a hood dryer or use a heating cap of some sort like a plastic cap/shower cap that keeps all the heat in
look.gif

also since yo hair is breaking, u may want to cut out the heat or at least use it to a minimum coz if its breaking that much, heat is definatly not yo hair's frend... do a search on air-drying as many ladies are having success with this and u shud ALWAYS use a deep cnditioner to repair yo hair i'm deep conditioning (wen no tin braids) every time i wash my hair which is once a week..how often do u wash yo hair?? then lastly try keeping yo ends out of the open coz the wind and sun dry them out so much that breakage is inevitable

Re: I\'m new

OK b4 i started using this stuff im using now i use to wach my hair twice a week but now im switching to once a week. I use to do the once a week thing last year but stopped cause i thought i was doin too much(even though i noticed a good difference) but now im back to it and its nice and soft. :^D So im gonna do that again. And yes the heat is ver minimal. I dont press nore flat iron much. Maybe once or twice a week. Only part i do that with is my bangs thats it. W/heatin up the olive oil i just put it in bowl and heat it for how long? And is the towel to be hot also or room temperature? I also 4got to mention i also have a Motions Leave in conditioner so i have that also. its nice too. Now the thing i notice alot of women do is that they sometimes put in other products in their hair, see i dont know how to do that w/o goin back and 4th and not bein consistent and giving things time to work on my head for a difference. But i'll try to work out something. Whoever has the closest kind of hair i have i'll listen to them. I have course, thick hair. When wet my hair is curly. When i put products on my head, whether my head is wet or dry, i notice that my left side takes more time to absorb the product in my hair than my right side. W/my right side its ok and absorbs it, but yet my left... i dunno :^S

Re: I\'m new

thats alright! as long as u remember that retaining fowth is not only to do with the products but also with consistancy especially with conditioning and deep conditioning....u cud try to only blow dry the hair or flat iron and not both coz that is a whole lotta heat to be using...also do u use a heat protectant coz it may do yo hair some good....

well, heat the oil till its hot and then keep it on the hair till it went cold, then using a shampoo preferably a moisturising one wash out the oil and then deep condition yo hair without fail, sit under a hooded dryer with the conditioner or with a plastic cap wait for it to act...then u cud wash it out and apply the leave in conditioner....hth

Getting your hair together will take time and patience, but you're in good hands

Re: I\'m new

Welcome Keke...
The hat and scarf are probably rubbing your hair...plus your scalp isn't getting a chance to breath. The ladies gave you good advice. I also want to add that on top of the first 2 things I mentioned you might want to cut back on the dryer followed by the heat.

Re: I\'m new

So did I wear my hat in winter time, realizing my hair wasn't growing. That I should wear a satin bonnet or scarf under my hat like the Caribbean or South American women.

Re: I\'m new

Well i dont have a hooded dryer(being cheap plus 4gettin to get 1. lol) So is it ok if i use a hot towel?
Yall say to cut back or to not use the flat iron after i dry my hair? Well would it be ok if i had the dryer on cool setting and dry my hair would it then be ok to use the flat iron? Also what are some good rollers 2 use for wet sets? Better yet what other sites can i go to to find some pictures or so of hair products or styles i could use. I have been tryin to find some good short hair products since thats my hair now but each time i look in a black hair magazine or a site for black hairstyles i either see the micro short hair styles to the looong down ya back hairstyles which is always weave. :^P

Re: I\'m new

Update: I have brought some Organic Root Stimulator hair mayo, polyester scarf(didnt know that till after i bought it. :^P). I looked at my ends this morning to see if any improvement is done since i've not worn the scarf and they look better so it was the scarf that i was wearin which was tearing at my hair or so. I also put some Motions Leave-in conditioner on my ends last night since i've read alot bout conditioning the ends alot. Hope im doing right.

Re: I\'m new

yeah !!! see our hair is already thanking you for it!! instead of using a wet/warm towel u can use a plastic cap instead (u can get 5 for a pound over here, u shud be able to find similar ones over there) because the plastic cap stops all heat from leaving your head, and then the heat once trapped, causes the hair shaft to swell up and open up and be able to absord some moisture....
