I know that I need a clarifying treatment. What brands would ya'll suggest, and how exactly do I do this? Do I moisturize after? Do I use my regular shampoo after? Please help! I appreciate it!

I use cream of nature clarifying shampoo, when I clarify once a month. Then I use my Motions Moisturizing shampoo afterwards.

Sorry I can't be of help. I just wanted to join this thread because I'm hoping that someone will explain what clarifying is. I've heard this so many times, but don't understand the purpose of it. I thought it was something for white folks.

Clarifying removes product buildup from the hair. If you use products with alot of -cones clarifying may be something you will need to do often.

i heard v05 lime clarifying poo is good. and its only a dollar. yeah i think u should use a moisturizing shampoo after clarifying.

There are several ways to clarify your hair, but a clarifying shampoo is probably the most thourough method. There are several you can choose from (I haven't tried any of these, though):

Suave Daily Clarifying shampoo
V05 Kiwi Lime Squeeze clarifying shampoo
Nexxus Aloe Rid
Elasta QP Bodifying Shampoo

Make sure whatever shampoo you choose specifically states that it will "remove product buildup". You use these like a normal shampoo, except you probably only need one lathering of it (more if you feel your hair has a lot of buildup). The frequency of using these shampoos depends on how often you use heavy/silicone-based products on your hair. You should also clarify before doing a protein treatment, so the treatment can better penetrate and repair your strands. I personally clarify about 2x a month, before a henna treatment or protein reconstructor.

I would recommend following the clarifying shampoo with a lather of moisturizing shampoo. You should also use a good deep conditioner afterwards. Clarifying can in some cases be drying to your hair.

From my experiences you would:
Clarify
Deep condition
moisturize then seal.

If you use a moisturizing product before hand it will be useless because clarifyig removes all of that.

Thanks BillyJay...but isn't that what shampooing is for??

NP:)

Actually some shampoos and conditioners have -cones in them which coats the hair. Moisturizing shampoos may take away the dirt but not the -cones.

Clarifying shampoos are sort of harsh and strip EVERYTHING off the hairshaft.

welcome!

i use Elasta QP Bodifying shampoo every time i wash because i use alot of product on my hair. i like to make sure to remove all of the Vaseline and body butter from my ends.

i like the Bodifying shampoo because the hair doesn't feel stripped after i use it. i do follow up with my prescription and moisturizing shampoos too though.

the VO5 clarifying conditioner is a good one for those that no poo it.

Thanks so much! That helps a lot! One more question. Specifically to Billy Jay, what exactly is sealing?

"Sealing" is applying a light coating of oil over your moisturizer to seal the moisture into your hair.

Since you're new, it's a really good idea to look over the follwing link to get a better understanding of the basics of healthy hair care. It's tutorial that was put together by DontSpeakDefeat (DSD), one of our moderators:

 Precious is on point!

You would first apply a water based moisturizer on your hair, follow up with a good sealant oil. My favorites are olive oil (EVOO), coconut oil, castor oil or my own blend. Use only a small amount.

Oh and from one newbie to another...Welcome!!!:D

ITA

I would also recommend design essentials organic cleanse shampoo. I recently tried the VO5 one and it was great. Its super cheap too.

Thank you everyone for the advice! Thanks precious jewel for that link too. It cleared up a lot! And I feel very welcome here now. 'Preciate it all!!!!!:)
