I'm new... have some Q's

Hi girls!

NB here! I'm loving this board. Just found it yesterday and I've been reading since this morning!

My current regimen is Ojon products. I LUV LUV the restorative treatment. I use FHI hot sauce for my heat protectant, and alternate with a Sedu protectant (when I home style). I use Paul Mitchell shine drops silicone for shine (which I rarely use because the Ojon makes my hair shiny). I use Biolage for my clarifying shampoo. I have FHI flat irons 1", 1 1/4", and 2". I've always had super long hair, it was effortless. And I really heat treated my hair (cooked it) when I was younger. However, now I've be consciously trying to grow out the layers and get it past shoulder length (I'll take some pics soon)...and it has been kind of not growing as fast. I thought I would step up my trims (as I like most girls striving for length hate them...LOL)... Still didn't work. It's highlighted now (don't know how I can tell what color/texture it is yet...). I have great hair, but I feel like I want it look like what I've seen here! With my ultimate goal of BSL.You guys look great. I get a qtrly (Affirm) relaxer. My stylist wants me to go with a press/curl, but I just feel like I'm scared of the reversion in the gym.

I don't/can't do protective styling on a day to day. I just don't like it. I like either wearing it down (when I'm not in the gym). In a pony or clipped. But as summer approaches and I'll be in the gym more, I was figuring maybe it's time for a change. I saw something called a "braid out"... How do you guys do this? Can it be done over a weekend? I don't mind looking crazy on the weekend, just not at work. When it is unbraided, it's that wavy/curly natural mix that I would go to work with.
Can you guys point me to some posts that would help me with that? (LOL...it's funny I don't know how to braid to the scalp, but I'm sure my mom would help...LOL)

I'm also interested in "henna" I watched the process on you tube and read about it here and thought...hey, yeah I can do that. Then I read the thread and it was all these compounds and conoctions..and I was like no wait. Does anyone go to an Indian salon to get this done? I get facials and threading there, but I've never attempted to let them do anything to my hair. Seems like most everyone is doing it at home, but it seems complicated for me.. and I would still like to see the benefits. The other question is, how do I let them know what color I want?

My current stylist, is like NO HENNA; it dries out your hair. (I already texted him about it...LOL...right before church). He did agree however to put in the PhytoRelaxer for me. (I go to the salon weekly, I can do it myself, but with work lately...it's just been easier)... PLUS...I'm not messing around with any permanent thing at home. I basically take all of my own products and let him do his magic... He's like in a minute you're going to come in here with your own assistant...LOL. But he's really pleased with the Ojon stuff, as he thought Kerastase was the best. But I know he's not going to go for the henna stuff, so I was thinking maybe I could get it put in at the Indian Salon.

This is all the stuff that I have ordered since yesterday:
PhytoRelaxer II
Bountiful Tresses (somebody tell me how to use this stuff)
HairTopia Vitamins (I know vitamins are usually a crock..but it has a MB guarantee)..

I'm thinking about ordering:
Ovation Cell Therapy (just the cell therapy; no shampoo)

Anything else that as a newbie I should have in my toolkit? I'm so happy to have found this forum, I can only imagine how FABULOUS my hair is giong to look this summer!

Sorry it's so long! I'm going to try to add some pics.

Welcome Newbie! I agree with your stylist. Don't do henna, its very drying. I'll let the pros come in and help you with the rest...

Welcome!

I found Henna to be too drying for me. I noticed you said that you go to the salon weekly, are you using flat irons in-between salon visits?

Welcome!

I had no problems with henna or cassia but some people did. Its messy as hell though. Lots of pros and cons with it and most stylists don't like to fool with it.

The only thing I'll say with the phyto is to make sure that if you want extremely straight hair, that your stylist uses adequate amounts. Its not really a time thing with phyto but more of a volume thing.

Rinsing is a pain the butt so as long as the bubbles are white you hopefully won't have any problems later down the line.

Some people don't wear protective styles at all and have fabulous hair. Extra care will have to go into that, like no heat and wrapping your hair at night.

I thought there was a newbie sticky somewhere (I'll have to find it) This website can be pretty overwhelming at first because there's so much info.

ETA: found the newbie thread. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=50291

Hi *fabulosity* and welcome!

I agree, henna can be drying, but there are ways to henna without the dryness. I like henna glosses, particularly henna-indigo glosses. My avatar pic was after the first one I did. I just did my second one this weekend. I love what they do for my hair!

Welcome!

I suggest you have a deep very moisturizing deep conditioner to follow your henna treatment with if you decide to use it.

WELCOME....

awwww that use to be me......... now i jus love the expression on ppls faces when they realize that its my real hair that they are looking at. lol i use to be a thinned head baldy:grin: bak in da day.

Awww...thanks guys! What a warm welcome!!! Thanks so much! I'm too tired to blur my face out of them, but here are some of my good hair pics. I wish I could find one digitally from like 10 years ago when I had WL hair and hated it...LOL!

I tried to upload some pics..but they are too big! What to do?

Hey! Welcome.

Yep, henna can be drying. But ever since I started doing brief (30-45 mins) henna glosses, my hair is stronger and healthier. Also, if you decide to do it at home, add humectants to your mix to counteract its drying effects. Follow it with a few intense moisture treatments and you should be just fine. Since you have color on your hair now, I would do a strand test first, to make sure you do not have any adverse reactions.

I have never been to an Indian salon, but if you do visit one, you should make very sure that they are using body art quality henna only...nothing with compounds and such in it. Read the info on www.mehandi.com, she breaks it all down in her guide.

As for exercising, there are many threads here that will give you tips on how to maintain your hair while working out.

Braidouts: off the top of my head, www.fotki.com/sylver2 she has instructions. Other ladies have braidout tutorials in their journals too they escape my memory right now, but maybe you can search the board for threads.

Good luck.

Only sometimes, I went on a stint where I hated my stylist. Long story; so I got my touch up and started it doing it myself, hence the couture gallery of irons and products. But for some reason the stylists that use the best products never get the styling part right, and the ones that get the styling part right don't use the best products. It was going good too, just took too long from start to finish. In a pinch I'll still do it. Now I'm back with my throwback stylist (me and stylists go through phases).. And I go maybe every 7-10 days. My schedule is a b right now.

My compromise was to bring my own stuff and pretreat with Ojon restorative treatment.

He really didn't like the henna idea, he texted me back in all caps "NO" and he never texts in caps...LOL! But I see so many pretty heads of hair that use it... maybe when I grow my highlights out so I can get black. And I'll go to the professionals, "I ain't trying to have all that sludge up in my house"...LOL!

Also has anyone ever used Lush products? I bought a preconditioner called Hseng Hua (something like that) and I really liked how it did my hair. The facial products are good too. I switch between that and Rx for Brown skin.
