I'm in LOVE with my new beautician! But I have a question...

I am so happy! I'm going to Atlanta on Monday for work, and I wanted to get my hair did. I went to this salon in Oakland and a beautiful Ethiopian woman greeted me. I told her that I'm about 3 months post relaxer, transitioning to natural. I was waiting for the "no you should relax it and start coming to my shop every two weeks, so I can keep it healthy and it will grow nice and long..." like all the other beauticians, but she didn’t! She takes me back and washes it with some herbal stuff (mostly Aveeda products), puts a conditioner in it for about 5 mins, and does a ROLLER SET! I walked in there expecting a bunch of heat to calm down all this new growth. But she tells me "no, the heat isn't good for the hair. You see these ends of yours? They're over processed, and that's why there so thin. You hair at the top (natural) is thick healthy and beautiful, so we want to keep it that way. No relaxer, and only a little heat after the roller set"...I was SOOO relieved that she said that. I’m thinking “where have you been all my life!” I ALWAYS have to fight the beautician about too much heat! Her hair was about shoulder length, but I look over to her 17 year old daughter's thick hair… it’s TO HER BUTT!! So, I asked my beautician what's the "real" secret to Ethiopian women having such beautiful hair and she said there's no real secret, "we never relax, mostly do roller sets with very little heat" and pointed out that mine and her daughter's hair is the same texture...

So, I asked her about washing and maintenance of the roller set and she said "I can keep it in for about three weeks." She told me that she does a roller set every 3 weeks-1 mo, only washing when she gets it done over. So I decided that if this set lasts I will not wash it, or bother it for 3 weeks. I asked her about moisture, and she said don't put anything in it. Maybe some anti-frizz stuff, but that's it. This is such a relief because I have been feeling like a plain Jane these days. Baggying and bunning day after day. I almost feel weird wearing my hair out because I can feel every little brush against my shirt and I freak out like “It’s breaking!!” But I realized that hair is aesthetic, nothing more. What’s the point of having beautiful healthy hair when you cant show it off??!!! I’d rather have healthy shoulder length hair that I can show off than waist length hair that’s tucked away in a bun!

So, after my hair was done, it was GAWJUSS!!! It looked soooo silky like I had gotten a relaxer. My SO was looking at me starry eyed all night. So needless to say, I'm happy about my new find! My only question is how to I get the curls to last overnight????? I tried to do pin curls last night and my hair was a hot mess this morning! I ended up using my steam rollers, and it looks okay now, but not as good as last night. What are some good tips for maintaining a roller set for 3 weeks?

Also, anyone getting success washing every three weeks, minimum heat, but still wearing hair down? This sounded a little off to me, but her daughter's hair didn't lie!

Congrats on your great find!! Although her practices go against a few of things many ladies rave about (protective styling, frequent washes) i really hope it works for you. I agree that you should be able to enjoy your hair as long as you give it a rest occasionally. Personally I hate protective styles other than braids and twists so if this proves to work for you hit me up on the pm because if I can be lazy as heck and where my hair down almost everyday girl I'll be on it like white on rice. For serious. Anyway, good luck and remember to tip well.

I suggest maybe putting them back on rollers at night. I think washing every three week should be fine. See if it works.

Your stylist sounds like mine in a way. They put something in your hair that is super moisturizing where it will last for two weeks! I know, it soulnds unbelivable to not moisturize every other day-I wish I knew what combo of products he used. BUt at home I can't do that, so I have to moisturize everyday. Three weeks doesn't sound bad to me even though it isn't what us LHCF people are used too. You won't be putting any moisturizer in it so it should remain decent looking until your next appointment.

I think some people can get away with wearing their hair down, but then again some people can't. I think Ms.Kibibi, something like that does wear her hair down religiously. Again, it depends on the person. And I think SL was the hump for most of us to get past in regards to whether or not to wear your hair down. If you have APL, all going to the back and not brushing against your shoulders, I don't think you should have a problem. BUt then again, don't take my word on it.:ohwell:

I agree...but how do you sleep in rollers? I have the magnetics and the snap cover ones. The magnetics hurt with the clips in, and dont the snap on leave dents? Maybe I can do flexi rods but, I can never get those things in right :wallbash:

They have the sponge rollers that have a satin coating on top of the sponge, and the snap just like the regular ones. (NOT talking about the ones completely covered in satin and work similar to flexirods.)

My secret to using rollers with covers and getting no dent is to remove the rollers as soon as I wake up, and put on a hair cap. Then I shower, get dressed and everything else. I let the curls relax while getting ready then I finally comb it into a wrap for a few minutes and take it down. No dents at all.:yep:

Can I get those results without the wrapping? I can't wrap my hair to save my life...

Thanks!! I'm gonna look for these today at the BSS.

I'm also transitioning, (haven't had a relaxer since Jan) when I decide to wear my hair straight I roll my hair up with Goody's satin rollers every night. Some curls may come out as spiral curls, but all I do is finger wrap my hair and gently shake it out and finger comb it right before I leave out the house. It keeps my hair looking fresh for about two weeks or so. It's not bone straight, it looks like a fresh roller wrap.

Yes, you just have to let it "rest" longer. Just take the rollers out and do nothing, don't try to comb it or separate curl nothing. Just wait until you're ready to go.
