I\'m afraid to ask because of my PJ tendencies but.

What difference does a brand of relaxer make? I've been using the cheapo, big ole double pack of ultra sheen for YEARS. What makes you guys choose this one and that one? What's the darn difference? I KNOW I shouldn't have asked this.... /images/graemlins/poke.gif

Hi Leshia,

Leshia, whatever perm works best for you is the best one. As long as it doesn't break your hair off or damages it. Everyone's hair is different and what takes to my hair, may not take to yours. Many people on this board seem be either natural or use Motions or Affirm, but I'm sure there are many others, who use something else.

I chose Motions after years of Optimum no-lye. My hair was always dry, but I never noticed it was from the relaxer. Eventually, it started to damage my hair and my hair began to break off. I switched to African Pride, and that was okay for awhile, but again the no-lye was not working for my hair. Someone rec'd Motions to my mother on her job and I tried it and loved it. No breakage and my hair had never been so moisturized after a perm. So, Motions has been with me since '99. /images/graemlins/clap.gif

But, if Ultra Sheen is working for you, then stick with it.

Oh, by the way. My mother used to use Creme of Nature perm which didn't do well in her hair, but before that she used the Dominican perm (I forget the name) which is a "cheap-o perm" and that was the best relaxer for her hair when she did perm it (now she is natural). Hi Leshia,

Many of us have made the switch from a no-lye to lye relaxer. I used Optimum no lye, and liked it. But like CarmenRose mentioned, my hair was really dry all the time and I didn't know why. I tried the lye formula and was surprised at the difference. I won't use a no-lye ever again. My hair is so much healthier now. If the present relaxer you use works for you, and your hair is in good shape, then stick with it. /images/graemlins/wave.gif

Ya'll know DARN well I'm moving to a lye relaxer!

Re: I\'m afraid to ask because of my PJ tendencies but.

* whispers quietly so that only Leshia can hear: If you do, I think you'll love your hair and be amazed at the difference in the way your hair looks and feels. Go for it!!* /images/graemlins/up.gif

I use Design Essentials Lye because that is what my hair stylist recommended. I think if Ultra Sheen is working well for you, you should probably stick with it. However, when my hair stylist switched to using a lye relaxer on my hair, I definitely noticed the difference. It was a positive difference. I won't go back to using no-lye relaxers.

Re: I\'m afraid to ask because of my PJ tendencies but.

I have to agree with Pebbles on that one. You will notice the difference in the relaxers if you switch to a lye relaxer.

I remember reading that lye relaxers were harsh on the scalp but easy on the hair (nothing that basing the scalp can't help) and that no-lye relaxers were harsh on the hair but easy on the scalp. This is why I made the switch to lye relaxers. The no-lye relaxers never irritated or burned my scalp, but they sure did make my hair dry.

Re: I\'m afraid to ask because of my PJ tendencies but.

Not dismissing your post Allandra, but I'm wondering who said that no-lye was easier on the scalp. Has anyone smelt that caustic stuff of no lye relaxers. I know lye don't smell like that, but that smell alone is enough to know (for me) that it doesn't do a damn thing for my hair.

The way my friend described the smell of no-lye she said that it went straight to the brain it was so potent.

Re: I\'m afraid to ask because of my PJ tendencies but.

Hi guys,

Allandra is right. According to the FDA, research has proven that the mixture of calcium hydroxide and guanidine carbonate to produce guanidine hydroxide (also known as "no lye"), is easier on the scalp, but harsher on the hair. /images/graemlins/brainy.gif If you need a link, and would like to read some of this information, let me know. /images/graemlins/wave.gif

I do not remember where I read that from. I just remember reading it at one of the many internet hair websites. IMO, all relaxers smell icky. Like I said, the only thing that no-lye relaxers did for my hair was make it dry. This is the reason why I made the switch to lye relaxers.
