If This Was Your Church

What kind of message is Canton trying to say here? btw. I'd seen a clip of his service where he tells the young men that could wear their hats in service if they want to. I wonder how he explains 1 Corin 11 to this congregation?

The same way we explain women praying without covering our heads. It is a tradition taught by Paul that some feel is still relavent while others feel is still binding. I'm not sure how I feel about it. But most women no longer cover or wear hats to service. If we are going to make cultural allotments for women not covering I can't find issue with men covering.

I'm not sure I understand the message in the video as well.

@momi and @Laela what are your interpretations?

I'm leaning towards a street gang who wants to come to Church to 'seek' God (i.e. they want to reform, change their lives). However, the Church people are barring them from coming inside due to judging them on their past and appearances.

Just my impression of the video.

That is my impression as well @Shimmie. I figured the question is "how would someone perceived to be from the streets be treated if they showed up at the door of your church?"

At my church they would be greeted warmly and seated just like anyone else.

1. The "Church" people are not behaving in a Christ-like manner
2. Regarding covering. IMHO and experiences God hears your prayers regardless of how you are dressed. For example, the saying that there are no Atheists in foxholes; I guarantee you that there are no uncovered praying heads in there either.
3. Remember Jesus flipped tables too.
4. Regarding attire of the gentlemen well what better way to "teach" them correct values than to allow them to "see" correct values modeled in their everyday life. The folks in the church were neither modeling nor teaching positive Values.

I feel like its representing the traditional church vs non traditional out the box church trying to come in. And how the traditional vs non traditional church worlds kind of collide with each other.

Hi Shimmie,

I'd love to hear what Canton has to say himself; but from my perspective, it looks like Canton is trying to depict two different churches... one trying to bring the world into the Church and the other trying to safeguard itself from the world. Both appear judgmental to me. Canton left World Changers, a more "traditional" church to start his own church. I don't necessarily see people worshiping differently or "freely" as an issue. It's more that a changing world is trying to change God's Word. There seems to be defiance in the faces of the group coming to the church. From my experience of people coming to church to 'seek' out God..they come in broken and humble. These dudes rolled up to the church, heads cocked, as if to say "Say something".. that's a defiant position.

God's word won't ever change. Maybe I'm overthinking, but the common denominator between Word and World is "L", for Love. That is much needed, on both sides.

To answer your question OP, what should happen next? The young men would be asked to take off their hats and have a seat.

I'm not sure I understand the message in the video as well.

Might it have helped if they had put on a spirit of respect and entered the church without the attitudes and like they were going to shoot up the place? Repentance is biblical. The story of the poor being judged by the haughty of the church is in scripture. But there is also such a thing as decorum. I'm tired of this generation thinking the world has to unravel to suit their poor manners, stink attitudes, lack of etiquette and such. Maybe they should go home and come back when they're in sack cloth and ashes. :giggle: A contrite heart.

Here's the full video/song. It's actually a powerful message. How many Christians judge and turn people away from the body of Christ? Pushing people away from the church (or condemning them) instead of inviting them in to change their lives and show them His grace. When HE was the one who was accepting of everyone.

Jesus Calls Levi
13He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. 14And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.15And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”17And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Mark 2:13-17

I didn't see the full vid when I'd make my comments...but after seeing it, the post still applies. From my perspective, the young folks aren't coming off the streets as unsaved people, they represent the church, too. Only their worship is more 'modernized'. Both sides are resistant (old school vs. new school) until they decide to worship God together. Very strong message indeed.
