I want to make my own measurement shirt, but I wanted to know how do you know where to start the numbers?

Each line represents an inch, but I have no idea how you figure out where to put the number one...
 
Put your shirt on and have someone help you measure where your hair currently is and start from there to measure your progress.

Or you can start at shoulder length and then measure down. So you can say I'm 2 inches from SL or whatever.
